It dies through a few thousand small administrative decisions that each look reasonable on their own. England ran that process on farmland between 1604 and 1914: more than 5,200 separate Enclosure Acts, each one legal, each one procedurally clean, converting close to a fifth of the country's land, commons into private property, acre by acre, until the institution that had governed it collectively for centuries simply had nothing left to govern. Horizontal cooperation among equals and vertical extraction from above were never the same institution, and conflating them erases the part worth defending. Biodiversity credits, green bonds, nature-based financial instruments, all resting on the premise that public funds are scarce so private capital should fund conservation instead. It's a category error. Ecosystems are public goods, diffuse, non-rival, non-excludable, and markets can't price what can't be fenced off and sold. That's not a technical gap waiting on better accounting, it's a defining feature of life-support systems. Once conservation has to yield a return, its design bends to the investor instead of the ecosystem. Carbon markets measure tonnes of biomass, so a fast-growing pine monoculture is more investable than an old-growth forest, even though the plantation is an ecological desert by comparison. Decision-making shifts from the people who've managed land for generations to fund managers in distant financial centres. History already answered this without private finance. Europe rebuilt its forests through public regulation. The US built its national parks by taking land out of the market entirely. Communities have managed fisheries and forests for centuries using the principles Elinor Ostrom documented. "We can't afford it" doesn't survive the numbers. Australia's Senate voted down a 25% gas export tax worth roughly $17 billion a year, while INPEX paid zero corporate tax on $21 billion in gas exports over a decade. The global biodiversity finance gap is about US$700 billion. Global fossil fuel subsidies run to roughly US$7 trillion. You raise a completely fair point, and honestly it's a good reminder that "ease of use" is always relative to what you're trying to do. My experience with MeshCore versus Reticulum was shaped heavily by what I was building toward — I was drawn to Reticulum's transport-agnostic architecture and the fact that it could span wildly different bearer protocols without me having to rethink the whole stack. That said, MeshCore is very much my second choice and not an afterthought — I'm actually collaborating with some folks in the US who are bridging Reticulum and MeshCore, so the two aren't necessarily as separate as they might seem. But I can absolutely see how someone coming at Reticulum fresh would find the conceptual model a bit baffling. The documentation has improved, but there's still a real learning curve. The audio call issue in the LXMF/LXST app is a good concrete example of where Reticulum's UX still lags behind — the protocol itself is robust, but the application layer tooling sometimes feels like it's a few sprints behind the underlying capability. Hopefully that catches up as the community grows. The rserver and meshbrowser development sounds genuinely exciting though — I hadn't looked closely at that yet. The idea of native HTTP over Reticulum with destination-hash addressing, with encryption baked in at the transport layer rather than bolted on, is a really elegant approach. You're right that it's conceptually similar to what Tor and I2P do, but with Reticulum's routing model underneath it could be quite different in practice on constrained hardware. I'll have to dig into that properly and might well write something up on it. More broadly, this whole space is moving so fast it's genuinely hard to stay current — by the time you've written something up, there's already a new development worth covering.
