I think the “Bitcoin is mycelium / living thing” framing is a great analogy for how Bitcoin manifests in culture, memes, social networks, economic behavior. Where I’m hung up is when that analogy gets pulled one layer down and applied to the base layer itself. I haven’t yet seen a coherent argument for why the consensus rules should be treated as a “living polity”, rather than as an ossifying model of time and state that living systems grow on top of.
When I look at Bitcoin, I see a fixed time and space substrate (global consensus on ordering and validity) and then money, data, and culture colonizing that substrate. Calling the whole stack “living” without separating substrate from emergent life feels like a category error mistaking the life of the ecosystem for the life of the protocol physics. By way of analogy, it’s like saying the soil and the mycelium are the same thing; they aren’t, and trying to change the chemical structure of the soil after it’s colonized can kill the network you’re trying to protect.
From that frame, you fight invasives at the network layer, policy, law, client behavior, culture, not at the consensus layer. I could be wrong here, and if there’s a good piece that really makes the case for Bitcoin as living polity at the base layer level, I’d genuinely like to read it.

IMO the argument is centering around semantics when it should be argued from metaphysics and consistency. Lopp’s metaphysics and his advocacy don’t line up, he sells Bitcoin as hard, ossified physics, then argues like a technocrat. Mechanic is at least coherent inside his living‑polity frame, he just hasn’t shown why that metaphysics is actually true of Bitcoin rather than simply assumed.

I don’t believe Bitcoin is a living system; my frame is that it is more fundamental than that. It functions as a fixed, globally shared digital‑physics substrate, a consensus model of time and state in computational space, around which users and their agents, and possibly future sovereign machines, coordinate, transact, and construct higher‑order digital institutions and, over time, a digital civilization. I never said Bitcoin was perfect or fell from heaven; that’s your strawman, not my position. I’m saying it’s a specific kind of infrastructure that lets anyone cheaply verify their own money and history, which is very different from ‘just another software project.’ It doesn’t have to be perfect to serve that role; it just has to be stable enough, verifiable enough, and widely used enough to be a real substrate. There are other projects that try similar things, but they lack the security, history, and adoption to serve as that substrate. Christ has saved me, is saving me and will continue to save me. During drawdowns in the price I see a disappointment and frustration from some people who have put all their hope in bitcoin and it’s like bitcoin isn’t holding up its end of the deal. Reminds me of ancient pagan practice where people fed and clothed their idols expecting flourishing in return, then they would get angry when they had bad crops or whatever. The blockchain isn’t spam—it’s the consensus-driven, immutable record of Bitcoin’s movement and spirit. Spammers are the ones who drown out real signals with noise and nonsense. I care about other people’s transactions because they give me price data and cash flow insights. But I don’t care about anything on-chain that doesn’t provide that kind of information.
To “spam the chat” is a DDoS attack, not just some arbitrary line about what’s acceptable. Bitcoin works because it’s designed to disincentivize spam. If someone’s pushing to incentivize spam, that feels off. The real question isn’t how to fill block space, but why block space is so cheap. That cheapness is the signal we should be decoding.

Let me be clear, I have great respect for you and everything you’ve done for NOSTR and Bitcoin, as well as the other core devs and leaders in the bitcoin community.
You can be technically right and still struggle to manage perceptions. When perception and reality don’t equate, perception becomes reality.
I get that this Is far more personal and raw for you than it is for most and I understand why you feel attacked and betrayed by a large chunk of the community.
My only motivation is to try and encourage people to consider others perspectives and try to reconcile where possible. I understand that may not be possible in many cases and that people will do so on their own time.
