Last Notes npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Hopefully it's 38th time lucky in terms of an actual peace agreement Jude 🤞 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul huge achievements on both fronts. Congrats on the anniversary Jude 🎉 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul talking about a few sensible reforms, see what's announced npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul their rules need to be changed to allow for more nuanced approaches imo But yeah, it's a very important budget in many ways. It needs to take the heat off those doing it tough and tighten the screws a bit on those who aren't npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul I think the split is 1/3 own, 1/3 have a mortgage and the last 1/3 rent etc You're spot on, the 1/3 that own aren't bothered by interest rate rises and potentially benefit if they have money in the bank npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul It's kind of ridiculous that the RBA has now lifted interest rates 3 times this year at the same time fuel prices are higher and that's starting to flow through to grocery prices etc I feel bad for them in that it's the only tool they have and the rules they work under effectively forced their hand. I feel worse for people, especially young families, already struggling to make ends meet with the cost of living through the roof and salaries not keeping up The budget next week really needs to do some of the heavy lifting rather than leaving it all to the RBA imo #auspol npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul bring back Emma imo although I'm not sure she'll want to run The Greens deserve another go 🙂 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul sounds like 2028 will be interesting in the ACT npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Good to see imo especially after they gave Labor a scare in Bean last time around #auspol https://citynews.com.au/2026/voices-seek-a-candidate-to-challenge-payne/ npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul they desperately need the rain down there as I understand it Enjoy the game npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul I think it's a mistake to bank on what's happened in the past, surely Pauline has learnt something over the last 30 years plus she has Barnaby there to help keep things together as well. For now at least npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul hopefully Zoe is wrong about the result but I think she's right in saying the Liberals are gone. Although they can take some hope from the result in Nepean and Rosevears last night They aren't federal though It's hard seeing One Nation missing the top 2 next week #auspol npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul So they're gonna screw over the disabled and ease the fallout by putting some of the money towards aged care, including fixing the mistake they made last year around support at home and showering etc Wouldn't it be nice if they spent as much as needed on both Cutting the private health rebate for over 65's as well #auspol #NDIS npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul it's going to be fascinating to see how the preferences flow. Libs and Nats have both put One Nation above Milthorpe but are campaigning against them I'm hoping Milthorpe wins it #auspol npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Excellent point, it's great we're living longer, healthier lives but haven't planned properly for the ageing population. We've dropped the ball on many fronts Why I'm so against tax free super over 60 although that will step on a few toes. We need people who can afford to pay tax to do so imo npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul I was a little younger in the 70's but around then and the early 80's it was go home when the street lights came on npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul nice, thanks for this Sounds like a pretty good life I think one of the main differences today is the 24/7 media landscape. I very much doubt everyone would have the same freedoms they had if everything that happened was on the front page like it is today. Sadly fear sells Lots of other pressures today as well that didn't seem to be there in the past. A more simple time npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul that's fair enough Maybe a different question for you, would you rather be a teen today or back then? npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul There's a balance to be found but we can't afford 3% of GDP if we want the things that matter more i.e. we can't be defenceless but we shouldn't be preparing for an invasion that is very unlikely to ever happen Noting we may need to step up and help defend our neighbours and allies one day AUKUS is a ridiculous WOFTAM npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul thanks for this Interesting read and makes a lot of sense, not sure I buy the less racist part tbh, plenty would possibly disagree. Probably varied a lot based on where people lived Thatcher and Regan changed the world for the worse but that started a little later We need hope to come back, why I like the Greens messaging in the UK so much npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul we'll never know but I wonder if things would be much different without the dismissal? Gough probably loses the next election anyway but I feel like it still would have been different in some ways npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul it was a massive decade in many ways Jude, thanks in large part to Gough I think I'm glad you enjoyed it 🙂 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul A lot of people I follow here, and the demographics more broadly, suggest many of you are better placed than I am to answer this one Was life better in Australia 50 years ago? We'll go with the mid 70's more broadly I was only in my first decade of life so it was pretty cruisy for me Interestingly, looking at what was happening bigger picture, it wasn't all that different globally. How was it at home? Question is as a result of the following article https://www.sbs.com.au/news/article/a-country-under-strain-australians-life-satisfaction-hits-record-low/u69wd9mge #auspol npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul 17 years is a decent time in politics, from memory his partner had some health issues leading into the last election I wish them both well npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Thanks for your service Shane npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Seems like a pretty tough budget on the way for the Australian Public Service Noting there are thousands ready to go if they're offered a redundancy, I just hope they land where they're wanted and not forced on those who don't Latest I heard is a dozen or so agencies have redundancies on the table already, more to come I'd expect #auspol https://region.com.au/federal-budget-not-looking-good-for-the-public-service/957630/ npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul wow that's devoted Great it went the way it did npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul There was an election yesterday, well 3 actually, that didn't get a lot of attention, councillors were elected in Liverpool, Uralla and a new Mayor was elected in Newcastle Having family connections to Newcastle, it's the one I'm most interested in The result was a landslide win to Independent candidate Gavin Morris, who will get around 50% of the primary vote with the Greens running second on 20% and votes still to be counted Checking out his page, it mostly sounds pretty reasonable. The biggest concern being his opposition to Rising Tide at its current location. I think it would strongly weaken the message if it was forced to move Either way, at least he believes in climate change and seems to want to improve things for the city more broadly so see how it goes I'll link to his website below I know we have a few locals on here, interested in your thoughts #NSWPol #Newcastle https://www.newcastleneeds.com.au/ npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Interested to see what people think about this from the Australian Greens I'll hold my thoughts till the poll is done Feel free to comment as well, I'm curious #auspol https://youtu.be/B0l5B9kOZvs npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul points for trying I'm thinking some people are almost impossible to cater for, better to just try for something most can eat It's lovely you offered and asked though npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Happy birthday @npub19rc…m3mw 🎉 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul it'll be interesting to see how long it is till people turn off the bridges npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul 8am 😮 Pass, I'm lucky to get to the office by 9.30am lol I start at 8.30am when I work from home npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul We should take the British Columbia approach and just keep daylight savings time year round imo 🙂 Lady I walked past yesterday after an evening trip to the supermarket stopped me and said it will be dark this time next week 😕 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Our Section Council passed a motion in support as well Nothing compared to your efforts though Jude, well done on getting out with the Vintage Reds npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul I'm passing on it as well in principle. I asked them to change the channel at work today, they flipped it to SBS instead Although I was scrolling to catch up and went through half a dozen posts on my ABC feed here before I even realised. I've now muted it for 24 hours npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Watching question time Jude 🤔 Hopefully not on the ABC npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul To be fair, after listening to it again he was trying to say something positive I think there is a balance in dealing with One Nation that's between where he is at, which I think gives them legitimacy they don't deserve, and the basket of deplorables approach npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul I'm not a fan of the flag waving patriotism he is adopting either He is pretty popular despite all that though npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul While he is captured by coal and a traditional conservative in many ways he isn't as black and white as many think For example his very sensible calls for greater access to WFH to encourage people to move to the regions. Can he convince his Liberal colleagues? Jane Hume seems to be onboard saying their policy at the last election was more about those who live 10 minutes from the office in Canberra #auspol npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul I'm in no way cheering for the Liberals to win a seat there Ideal world the Greens would pick one up 🙂 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Encouraging to hear the Treasurer, on a clip played, saying that the war isn't a reason to hold back on reform in the budget and is actually a reason to go further Let's hope he gets it right, we desperately need major economic and tax reform #auspol #Insiders npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul I'd love to see Labor lose a seat in the ACT, even if it's to a community independent npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Thanks for the pics Jude Unscheduled dip, did you fall in 🤔 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul a little bit of analysis by @npub1ufu…y4ed on the link below Norfolk Island voted very Teal last election from memory so a shame it's going from Bean https://www.tallyroom.com.au/64607 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Maybe so but he went into his inquiry saying the agencies had done nothing wrong. That's far from ideal imo npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Hopefully he holds onto his job 🤞 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Not often you hear someone say they are being paid too much lol Either way, I think it's better left to the royal commission rather than someone with such close ties to the intelligence agencies #auspol npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Hopefully not. All being funded by Gina though Oh, Clive's back as well npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Couple of new polls being reported on Pollbluger YouGov Labor 30 One Nation 26 LNP 19 😮 Greens 13 Morgan Labor 26.5 😮 One Nation 23.5 LNP 22.5 Greens 14.5 No wonder Littleproud is moving on It was good to see a couple of Labor voters here say they've handed in their memberships, I'm surprised they held on this long but great they've seen the light If we want a brighter future we need to vote for it, hopefully we see that Greens vote growing 🤞 #auspol npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul I've got family in Cairns and have been as far north as Cooktown It really is beautiful up there, hot though See how it plays out I guess. Maybe NSW is the go this year npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul hopefully Plan A gets to go ahead Jude, can't imagine Trump wanting this to drag on till the midterms npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul I like Penny in the main but her position this morning, on behalf of Australia, is pretty crappy in the main Iran getting nuclear weapons capability is another WMD excuse Iran as a sponsor of international terrorism is more legitimate The refusal to be critical of the US is infuriating International law needs to be applied consistently, even if others ignore them Treating us as fools if we're expected to believe the Australian submariners played no part in the sinking of the Iranian ship To her credit, Penny did say regime change being imposed is unlikely to work, the Iranian people need to decide what comes next as much as possible I'm glad to hear we won't be involved in offensive action against Iran, I hope those lines aren't blurred any further and the war ends as quickly as possible #auspol #Insiders npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Looks like the approach the Greens leadership took in talking to the Canberra Liberals has led to some fallout Will it claim any political scalps? #ACTPol https://region.com.au/act-greens-entire-campaign-team-quits-after-power-sharing-talks-with-canberra-liberals/947023/ npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul definitely, I think some AI companies will fold and others will be taken over with the power becoming more concentrated I can't imagine AI will become more intelligent than humans but it doesn't need to be It will be better, or just as good, as humans at doing repetitive tasks. It will definitely make mistakes but it will save time and cost jobs in some fields On the bright side, it will free up some people to do the work AI will never do better e.g. teaching, nursing, aged care, childcare, cooking, some trades etc npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul I don't think it's necessarily the end of the world as we know it but there are big changes on the way Sadly being rushed before the technology is ready npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Hopefully he is right but it seems like a bit of a stretch to me npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Reform 2nd, Labour 3rd The end of Starmer 🤔 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul You beauty, the Greens have won it 🎉 #UKPol #GortonAndDenton npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul Interesting Albanese seems to want to be seen as leading on this one He was on AM this morning and claimed as much. Also said he is a republican but the Government won't be moving on a republic. Disappointing #auspol https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-02-23/australia-backs-removal-of-andrew-line-of-succession/106377738 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul From the Guardian Australia Live Blog "South Australian ‘empty nesters’ to get stamp duty windfall in $70m pledge The South Australian Labor party is proposing to give “empty nesters” a massive stamp duty saving of more than $100,000 to encourage them to trade their large family homes for smaller dwellings, AAP reports. The move aims to free up crucial housing stock for growing families. The total stamp duty abolition would apply to people aged 60 or over buying a smaller, newly built home or off-the-plan apartment worth up to $2m, saving eligible South Australians up to $103,830. The exemption can only be accessed once." Great move imo and hopefully one that's adopted nationally. There are too many half empty family homes #SAPol npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul This is very good from Andrew McLachlan, Liberal Senator from South Australia and worth a read imo Finishes with "To cut racist rhetoric from the body politic is both conservative and a progressive act. Hume was pretty blunt in her assessment of where things were heading for the Coalition as she tried to make sense of the last couple of weeks. "I do believe that it's time for the leaders to take a good, hard look at themselves and decide what it is that they're going to do to get us out of this hole," she told Sky News. "It's more than just coming together, shaking hands and saying 'we've kissed and made up'." She denied she was calling for a change in the leadership but Hume said they needed to figure out what they stand for as a Coalition. "Who is it that we're fighting for? What are our policies? Because people have stopped listening to us because we are a rabble," Hume added." Also said on the polling they wouldn't win a lower house seat in Victoria or NSW #auspol #LibSpill https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-02-09/federal-politics-ley-littleproud-albanese-coalition-estimates/106314548 npub1gye0fk6eeaah9nhgv2dvqsdc39u0whgffaea9czymaf5ag96scxqc00qjc Paul 🍿 definitely still needed Jude I wouldn't be surprised if a switch to a male leader, even Angus, won back some of the voters who have left.
