We were lucky to catch Elim Chan’s debut at SF Symphony last Fri after she was named the next music director, and it was really special. She conducted La Mer, one of my favorite orchestral pieces, and one I’ve probably heard them play a dozen times. She said she felt humbled and grateful at taking on the role, and she exuded a really direct, open, youthful energy.
She also conducted Sascha Cooke, a long time collaborator of MTT’s, and they had a pretty emotional passing-the-torch moment in his memory. Everyone felt his presence, and his blessing, so strongly.
No one can replace MTT, of course, and I’m still pretty heartbroken that we couldn’t keep Esa-Pekka, but Chan seems poised to bring on a new era. Can’t wait for the 27-28 season!

I’m no music critic, but I think Imogen Heap‘s Hide and Seek may be one of the best popular music songs of all time. Right up there with American Pie, Hallelujah, Thriller, etc. Definitely the vocorder’s pièce de résistance, I don’t know if anyone else has taken that instrument quite so seriously before, or since.

I’ve been a daily coffee drinker for decades, and I’m taking a break for a month right now. No real reason, just trying it.
Halfway through, not much to report. One mild headache early on. No noticeable difference in energy. (I’m pretty insensitive to caffeine.)

In my 25+ yr career in (systems) software engineering, I can count on one hand the number of real paradigm shifts I’ve seen:
Ubiquitous automated testing, eg unit tests
Modern network routing fabrics, which made intra-DC bandwidth effectively infinite and intra-DC latency effectively zero for most workloads, Patterson notwithstanding
SSDs, which combined the speed of memory with the capacity of disk. No more counting seeks!
Cloud infrastructure
AI coding
I’m not saying anything new by including AI coding here. I don’t fully know what its long term effects will be. I doubt many of us do. And the industry is obviously far from perfect.
But coming from a late adopter, and a skeptic in general, it’s still very clearly a big deal. And I don’t see those often.

What can be learned about maintenance mind from all this? One thing that seems clear is the need to examine its opposite: neglect mind. Examples of both were evident in my tale of the 1968 Golden Globe Race…
The race's biggest loser, Donald Crowhurst, had neither maintenance training nor much sailboat experience, and he was delusionally optimistic. His neglect mind was part laziness and ignorance, part surrender to fantasy.
Maintainers are realists.

Really enjoyed Nat Bullard’s State of decarbonization presentation this year, as always. Reminds me of Mary Meeker’s classic yearly Internet Trends decks, but for climate tech. It’s that valuable, and useful.
Some takeaways, in no particular order:
Land use emissions are at their lowest in 60y
Almost 25% of emissions fall under some price on carbon regime
Electricity passed oil as the single largest form of energy in ~2005. It provided ~70EJ of energy in 2025, vs < 50EJ from oil, the next largest form
China now generates 40% more electricity (10k TWh) than US + EU combined (7TWh)!
China’s CO2 emissions have been flat for the last 2+y. India’s is effectively flat now too. (US and EU are 10-20% down from their peaks in ~2010.)
Price of oil has trended steadily down 4y, from $120/barrel peaks in 2022 to $60 now. Plus, we’re currently at 5M barrels/day of oversupply, and rising sharply
US public opinion on nuclear has risen sharply, 61% favorable now, vs 44% 10y ago
Related: global annual nuclear investment has more than doubled in the last 10y, from ~$32B to ~$74B. (Almost past coal!)
Global power generation asset investment finally surpassed fossil fuels in 2025, at just over $1T
Climate capital inflows of all kinds are down, as are sustainability fund returns and launches. Climate tech investment specifically is up, barely.
China is the exception: it’s half of global renewables investment, $70B/y green manufacturing investment, leading (by far!) on nuclear project development and cost per MW
Voluntary carbon credits are back to historic $.5B/y level. 2021-22 spike of $2B/y was an anomaly.
Coal demand has been flat for the last few years, including China. Coal generation in India is flat (~1300 TWh), everywhere else flat to down
Renewables generation passed coal, 5100 TWh vs 4900
Solar generation surpassed wind for the first time
…but solar installation rate in EU has flattened at ~65 GW/y
Solar duck curve peak-to-trough is now 50-75% of generation in Texas, 80-90% in California!
US grid activity is booming, and chaotic. Record interconnection requests (PJM, ERCOT), transformer prices, etc. Demand and generation forecasts all over the map
“I think our forecast of datacenter load for, say, 2032 is probably off by a factor of two. I just don’t know which way, two times too high or two times too low.”
Datacenter power consumption is up 80% since 2020…

Lithium ion dominates battery chemistry, 95% of installed volume. Storage is second largest use case (22%) after EVs (70%). >100 GW scale storage projects planned for 2026
Despite press, EV growth has continued, roughly linearly. They’re over 25% of global auto sales now. China is leading; they’ll sell more EVs this year than all US passenger cars
SAF production has doubled every year for the past 7+y, but it’s still negligible, < 1% of total jet fuel
Hydrogen outlook (demand, generation, projects) is mixed at best

Art TVs are good technology.
I’m not talking about the hardware, or the software, really. The panels are old, outdated, edge-lit. The interfaces aren’t much better: Tizen is somehow both over- and under-engineered at the same time. I don’t love paying for yet another subscription. And yes, like all modern TVs, they spy on you ruthlessly, at least by default, trying to claw back a bit of margin in a cutthroat business.
But. Since we bought a couple Frame TVs, there’s now way more art in my life. Classics, sure, but also artists and styles and traditions that are entirely new to me, from all over the world. Chinese scrolls from the imperial dynasties. Graffiti and street art. Surrealist photography. The national collections of Zimbabwe -Bulawayo, Korea, Prado, Singapore. For the first time, I got a taste of what it’s like to actually be at Art Basel. I easily spend 15 minutes or so a day ensconced in a gallery in Delhi, or bamboozled by a 19th century trompe l’oiel, or just enjoying whatever pops up on the slideshow. It’s improved my life immensely.
Obviously, TVs are a limited way to experience art. I love museums too, and galleries, and every now and then I fall in love with a print or canvas enough to bring it home, or at least try. Even so, these TVs have added a wealth of art to my life that I never would have experienced before. That’s good tech.

For me, the defining characteristic of open source is that you’re giving up control over your code. You can choose how much to give up, based on the license, but you pretty much always end up with less control than if you kept it closed source.
That’s good! It’s the point. I tend to license my open source work as public domain, which gives up as much control as possible, but that’s just me.
Regardless, once you’ve given up control, it’s gone. You can re-license going forward, but not retroactively. You can’t – or at least, shouldn’t – try to claw back control later. You gave it up. That’s the whole point.

If you find yourself saying “this time is different,” think first. History rhymes pretty damn hard, human nature doesn’t change much, if at all, and the very few times that genuinely do turn out to be different, we don’t tend to see or call out early on. Predicting the future is difficult, and we’re not good at it.
It may feel good to think we’re special, living in a special unique time, and occasionally we are, but not often. End of history illusion, etc.
This time is probably not different. At least, not significantly. And that’s ok.

For years now, we’ve been giving our 10yo a weekly allowance, and generally not buying her toys or video games etc, so that she has to buy them herself. Finally got some real world evidence that it might be working.

Fediverse! I’ve been building a bridge to Bluesky, and they’re turning on federation soon, which means my bridge will be available soon too. You’ll be able to follow people on Bluesky from here in the fediverse, and vice versa.
Bluesky is a broad network with lots of worthwhile people and conversations! I hope you’ll give it a chance. Only fully public content is bridged, not followers-only or otherwise private posts or profiles. Still, if you want to opt out, I understand. Bridgy Fed now supports all web sites! You can now use it from the fediverse to see and follow any site, regardless of whether it has microformats2, webmentions, or WebFinger. Bridgy Fed extracts as much profile info as it can, generates fediverse posts from Atom and RSS feeds, and so on.
Web sites start out bridged to the fediverse as [domain]@web.brid.gy. For example, to see new nature.com articles in your fediverse feed, follow @[email protected]. And as always, if you have a web site, you can upgrade Bridgy Fed to use its domain in its fediverse handle, like mine at @[email protected].
(I’ve loved seeing other similar bridges recently too, including @[email protected]‘s RSS Parrot and @[email protected]‘s pi-activitypub-server. We’re all pulling in the same direction!)
This is one more step toward making Bridgy Fed support people wherever they are, on any network, fully bidirectionally. Stay tuned for more!

Wow. Never thought I’d see the day that Mickey Mouse would lose his copyright and enter the public domain, but it’s finally happened. The internet may have long since moved on to newer, stranger battles, but the old graybeard hell of copyright wars has finally frozen over. Truly the end of an era.
