With solar panels, wind turbines, and battery storage, the government could legislate on any new data centre being self-powered.
Site any new data centre near the coast with a desalination plant and mandate that they’re self-sufficient for water too.

We’ve experienced the same in the UK 😡
Our vet practice, which we’ve used since 1993, sold out to a large conglomerate a couple of years ago and, since then, our bills have rocketed and the standard of care has slumped.
Also, unnecessary procedures have been “suggested” which we have the knowledge and experience to respectfully decline, but I imagine that others will have a pet euthanised because of the unaffordable expense of “recommended” investigations/treatment 😡

When Blair’s government introduced Working Tax Credits, I said it was insane as it just subsidised bad employers and businesses that weren’t successful enough to pay a living wage.
If a business isn’t sufficiently profitable to pay its workers a living wage then it should be allowed to fail.
Similarly, if a business’s owner is too greedy for his own profit to pay their workers a living wage, that owner deserves to lose his business.

Grenfell is a classic example of what's wrong with this country and neoliberalism in general.
Take a block of inherently safe but dated flats. Tart them up, so that they don't offend their rich, shallow neighbours and do it as cheaply as possible for profit without a thought about safety.

Raised and educated in Cardiff, I saw the damage inflicted by Thatcher on the communities reliant on the heavy industries of the South Wales valleys.
I hated her then and now, especially after her and Reagan’s deregulation of financial services directly led to 2008 global FS crash 😡
I was a young gay woman when AIDS started to affect gay male friends and when Section 28 was enacted…I loathed her for the harm she caused to my community 🤬

And train people on emergency procedures and regularly test disaster recovery (DR) processes!
How many organisations claim to have DR plans in place which are untested or haven’t been tested in the last 10 years?
In the mid-1980s I worked for BT for a group who tested BT’s DR plans at all the UK’s computer centres and simulated recovery from fire, flood, and intrusion “disasters”.
I’ll put good money on that never happening now 🤦

I seem to remember Cameron and Osborne saying that volunteers and charities should make up the shortfall in the provision of services at the start of their failed austerity plan 🤔
The project was called the “Big Society” and a 2015 report concluded that it largely failed to reach the people who most needed help.

That's really lovely too and it reminds me that our window cleaning friend holds safety certifications too...even when he couldn't read.
So many people are written off, often far too young and usually without any positive intervention or support.
However, our window cleaning friend and your landscaping neighbour show that, given the right environment, many people who have been written off can make a contribution to society.

Over time, he met and married his wife, raised her daughter as his own and they had a son. They bought a house and settled down to family life.
My wife was head of learning and development with a police service and she offered to help him with his literacy when she retired which was in 2016.
He can now read and write, which has enriched his and his family’s lives and his business has grown. He still cleans our windows and still comes to us for advice!

Being able to create and run a successful business and employ several people, despite being unable to read or write was a huge achievement.
Over time, I learned about his background and released that he’d been badly let down by the system and that his frustrations led to his frequent issues with the law.
Our friendship grew and anytime he needed help with official documents, or just needed advice in general, he’d come to us (in Cardiff) from his home in Merthyr.

We’ve had the same window cleaner for 20 years.
When he started his round, he was about 20 and quite a troubled young man who seemed to have regular appointments with Merthyr magistrates’ court.
Early on in our friendship, I discovered that he couldn’t read, yet he had a successful window cleaning business around South Wales.
He kept in his head his six weekly cycle of rounds and knew exactly who had paid him and who still owed and how much they owed.
Extraordinary!

The tone of this article made me absolutely furious.

I remember a visit to the Quarry Hospital at the National Slate Museum and there was a ledger open in a display cabinet.

My wife participated in a similar study some years ago. It wanted to understand the best screening for early detection of ovarian cancer.
One cohort had an annual blood test, the next had an annual intra-vaginal ultrasound scan, and the last had no screening.
Caroline was part of the ultrasound cohort...for which I was extremely grateful as this proved the most effective at determining early ovarian cancer.

Which won't affect us as we already buy organic, free-range meat, eggs, and dairy because we're lucky enough to be able to afford it.

I grew up with our family's menagerie of dogs, cats, and all kinds of furries, but I was still terrified when I brought my first dog into my home for the first time as an independent adult.
The responsibility of taking such a vulnerable little soul into my sole care was scary, but I did the best I could every day to ensure that she lived her best possible life.
I know you are doing the same for Summer and every photograph of her you share shows your devotion to her ❤️❤️❤️

Universal Basic Income for all.
Cheap and efficient to implement and it ensures that the safety net really works.
Any excess income (whether via earning or investments) would be repaid via taxation.
Unless I’m missing something, this would be fair, humane, and efficient and it would reduce the risks of harm through the pressures on mental health and malnutrition which would also save on the UK’s NHS.

Yet the country desperately needs STEM graduates 🤷
As a chemistry undergrad then post-grad from 1975-1981, the cost of providing these courses was obvious!
As an undergrad, after the first year’s Tripos, I was one of only 12 single honours students.
It was a full-time job with lectures every weekday morning (0900-1200) and practicals every weekday afternoon (1300-1800), except Wed p.m. which was free for sport.
Each practical was run by a lecturer with >= 2 paid demonstrators.

We are back in the Victorian and Edwardian Britain right through the reign of George V, where so many young men were unfit (because of poverty and malnutrition) to fight in the Crimean and Boer wars and WWI 🤦
Which led to the post-WWI introduction of a limited “welfare state”…so that working class men could be “fattened up” for fighting in wars…not because it was the right thing to do 🤦

I think that polio vaccines are usually administered orally...mine was on a sugar cube!
More likely to be the smallpox vaccine where the vaccine is "scraped" into the skin of your upper arm 🤔
I was quite surprised, when I first noticed that younger people didn't have the smallpox scar on the top of their left arms because smallpox had been eradicated!
As a child, I had a BCG vaccination and a first rubella aged 14.

In 1967, I was visiting my mother who was in Cardiff Royal Infirmary for surgery.
The very young woman in the bed next to my mother was in an iron lung. She must have been one of last pre-vaccination victims of polio in the UK.
Although I was only 11, that image is still vivid in my 68-year old memory and I've always been first in line for vaccination and grateful for the scientists and medics who developed them...then and now.
Anti-vaxers are dangerous fools 🤬
