I’ve been using the Ivory app on iOS for Mastodon for a few years now. It’s good! But it also feels mostly the same now as it did then, for better or worse. Haven’t really looked into the alternatives since then. Anything I should check out?
(I use Elk on the desktop and I feel leas inclined to switch there, but by all means, if something fun happened in that space I’ve almost certainly missed it, so don’t be shy)

I was today years old when I found out LinkedIn has a chronological timeline mode*, and why LinkedIn recommends against enabling it in the settings. Because once you do, you’ll see that people aren’t talking about AI, agents and LLMs anywhere near as much as LinkedIn would have you think. My feed just went from ~90% AI hype to one with only the occasional post on the topic. Almost as if one of the companies most invested in the bubble would use a platform they own to inflate it.
(Could be that it’s an EU-only thing? I remember hearing about an EU requirement like this in the past. If so, I’m sorry if it’s not available to you. The free market will sort it out, I’m sure.)

also interesting to hear about Linux Foundation working on that. I hope they succeed! A little funny though as when I and others suggested they switch to a self-hosted open source solution for chat the last time Slack tried a rug pull, they seemed to give zero fucks about anything they couldn’t just pay for but would have to host and possibly contribute to. Which struck me as a rather awkward position being what they are. I hope they changed for the better 🙂

I remember like a year ago seeing someone working on a federated meetup app. That would be the dream! Not sure what happened to it though. “It didn’t pay the bills” is probably a pretty safe bet. I’d love to contribute some to a project like that 😍

I both believe and sympathize with the burnout stories shared by the #fosstodon admins. I can’t imagine that running an instance with thousands of users in my spare time would be anything but misery.
But while I’m sure I’d have 99 problems running an instance, kicking out a nazi moderator after people made me aware of that fact would not be one. I can hardly think of a better stress relief.

I hear you! A simple/cheap but pretty efficient solution we’ve found is this “puzzle tile floor” which you (or even the kids!) can assemble anywhere it’s needed at the moment. Almost like a toy in its own right, and help some with preserving your floors.. as well as with the noise.

What's the best way to get decent text-to-speech on a web page these days? I'm building a web "app" for my 3 year old son — basically a simple image gallery where the name of whatever he points at is read out loud.
I started out using the Web Speech API, but the voice is absolutely *awful*. Robotic, cold and mispronouncing half of the words. Is that the state of the art of this tech in the browser, or have I missed something?
I don't really care about technology choice, license, or whatever in this context. I just want something that will help him learn, and what I have now isn't good enough for that.
