I think some people get so deep into a hobby that it becomes a big part of their personal identity, so when someone else disagrees with them about some aspect of it, it really does feel like a personal attack that triggers a strong emotional response. About bugs.
Hopefully most of them are better about it offline. Forums and social media can definitely amplify the problem.

It happens over trivial little things on every special-interest forum ever and it's always so weird to see. People lose perspective and take any differing opinion as a direct personal attack, then things escalate from there.
I'd say they need to touch grass, but gardeners probably do the most plant-touching of all!

My boss is at a conference and somehow that means *I'm* in charge of the whole department for the rest of the week. My coworkers keep coming to me for things as if I know what I'm doing.
Don't they know that I'm a baby??? My diaper was way too soggy this morning for me to have this kind of responsibility. :neocat_nervous:

I Yeah, I started off feeling pretty determined to make things work with Kinoite because I really like the idea of an immutable OS, but I just wanted to be able to do more stuff and the workarounds needed to get things working seemed more complex than just running a regular distro.
I don't think the printer drivers were anything fancy, and they were installed and working long enough for me to print a test page before I rebooted and ran into that issue. It was probably unrelated to the printer drivers, but I really don't know what I did to cause it.
I'm pretty sure I know how you know that happens after installing Nvidia drivers on Fedora! I think you mentioned it in a post a few months ago about what distros you'd recommend for a beginner. Your many Linux posts were actually really influential when I was trying to pick a distro and a DE. :3
It's a shame that Linux support for Apple Silicon still isn't that great! I'm not an Apple fan but I have to admit that they do make some nice hardware. It would be pretty cool to have alternative operating systems for them.

So far my Linux experience has had the typical amount of friction and frustration that I've come to expect, but I seem to be past most of it.
I started off on Mint, but that lasted like 10 minutes because I need functional display scaling and it does not appear to be capable of that. My options were "really tiny" at 1x and "way too big" at 2x. I did find a fractional scaling setting but it just made everything blurry.
So I decided to try Fedora next since I was reasonably familiar with it from my Bazzite machine. I really like the idea of an immutable OS so I installed Kinoite and rebased to the lightly-modified Universal Blue version. That was a pretty good experience, but I kept running into stuff that I wanted to be able to do that was either really hard or impossible to do on an immutable system. I could definitely get by it, but I couldn't stop wanting that additional functionality that was just out of reach - like being able to use my printer!
After a couple days of that, I installed regular Fedora KDE... and managed to irreparably break it pretty much immediately. I have no idea what I did - I just installed a few things like the non-free media codecs and the printer drivers and rebooted, and it just wouldn't boot up after that. It started loading and then it would just hang at a loading screen forever. No error messages or console output or anything.
That was pretty inauspicious but I decided to give it another go. I did like that it had an option to reinstall while keeping my files and settings, which saved me a bit of setup time. And so far I haven't managed to break it again! Claws crossed that I won't mess anything else up, but I think I've got things to a place where I can just use my computer and hopefully not have to spend too much more time in the terminal (I hate using the CLI).
I've been really impressed at how well all of the hardware on this laptop is supported. It's a 4-year old Thinkpad so it's a pretty good candidate, but still - everything just works, even the Trackpoint and the fingerprint reader!
Power management seems to be pretty good too. This has a 12th gen Intel processor which is pretty inefficient for a mobile CPU, and the battery life under Windows did not look very promising. It's not great under Fedora either but it's definitely better, and at least it can stay cool enough to actually turn the fan off sometimes.
Overall, I'm really happy with it! It's nice to see how usable and functional Linux can be as a regular desktop.

I have been using Bazzite on my living room PC for a while now, but I mostly just interact with Steam so it's not the same as daily driving a Linux distro. It's been about 20 years since I've done that!
Also, I had forgotten just how bad the Windows 11 out-of-box experience was. I don't mind using it on my desktop or my work computer, but I have them set up to get rid of all the ads and other junk you get on a new installation. It's a relief to use an OS that's not trying to monetize me as hard as it can.

Oh yeah, I'm 100% with you there. All the logistics involved with travel are sooo stressful. Being on the plane itself is fine, but everything on either end is really anxiety-inducing.
And going through security in American airports is particularly unpleasant, at least in my limited experience with them. I'm sorry you gotta deal with that every time you fly.

It's the worst! It's so inconvenient and uncomfortable, but having facial hair or body hair makes me feel even more grown-up so I still gotta do it.

I have big Dumbo ears and I wear glasses, so that has a big impact on what headphones I can actually use. I can't always count on circumaural headphones to actually fit over my ears, and they have to be open-backed because closed ones usually depend on having a good seal against your head to have decent bass and the glasses prevent that.
For closed headphones I gotta go with supra-aural ones. I know a lot of people don't like them, but I actually find them pretty comfy, although my ears do get a little sore after an hour or so from pressing against the arm of my glasses.
This is mostly what I listen to if I'm sitting at a desk:
Sennheiser HD560s - I keep these at work, they're pretty much great at everything and reasonably comfy now that the headband has relaxed a bit.
Beyerdynamic DT990 Premium 250 Ohm - They're super comfy and have a nice open sound, so I prefer them at home unless the harsh treble doesn't work for what I'm listening to.
Sennheiser HD600 - Classics. They don't try to crush my head like the HD560s so they're quite comfy too.
That's just a small selection though - I used to be really into headphones and I have waaaayy too many. And of course these days I mostly just listen on speakers. 😅

It's one of those things that really demonstrates how little you are, like waking up with your plushie still in your arms, or with a wet diaper that was dry when you fell asleep. :3
I hear you on the sore teefs though, a few hours with a paci makes my mouth feel kinda uncomfortable too. I think part of the problem for me is the size; even the Fixx "Size 10" teats seem kinda short and I have to suck too hard to get it to stay put. I wanna get a REALLY big one so it stays in my mouth easier, but those are hard to find and the price has been hard to justify so far.

I really wish I could fall asleep with a pacifier in my mouth. Nukking on my paci is such a nice sensation and it makes me feel so little, but it becomes such a focus that it just keeps me awake. So frustrating!
It would be so nice to just drift off to sleep with my paci in my mouth just like a little baby. :blobcat_pacifier:

Hmm, maybe! I thought about getting these in S instead since they seem to run kinda large, but the sizing info they provided didn't fill me with confidence. I'd rather wear a diaper that's a bit too big than try to squeeze into one that's too small!

Some (more) new diapers for me showed up yesterday! I just got a bunch from ABU but I couldn't help myself when the Kiddos Premium Nights became available in Canada.
They're really good! I think they definitely nailed the print and it makes me feel really babyish. The diaper is a bit big for me, so the wings end up covering a lot of the tape strip which is a bummer. I seem to end up between sizes with most diapers these days, so that happens a lot.

Shopping for smoke detectors sucks! I had to replace all the ones in my house a little while ago because they expired (loudly, at 2:00 AM). Both Kidde and First Alert have so many different models with little to distinguish them, and no end of negative user reviews (because why else would you leave a review for a smoke detector?).
In the end I went for the cheapest First Alert photoelectric smoke/CO detectors I could find, and they're doing okay so far. I switched away from Kidde because they had so, so many reviews complaining about false alerts in the middle of the night and my parents had actually had that issue in their house.
Didn't come across Gentex in my research. Looks like they're aimed more at commercial use?

It did get detected by Google Home and Smartthings at first, but I don't think I could get it onboarded properly with either. It didn't work at all with HA from what I remember.

Yeah, it worked pretty well when I had it set up through the TP-Link app... until one day it didn't. My old TP-Link smart plugs worked pretty well though.

What brand of switch did you go with? My experience with the TP-Link Matter switches has not been great - I've never been able to successfully onboard the one I installed. It's a shame, because they're so cheap!
I bought a bunch of Zooz wall switches a while ago but I haven't gotten around to installing any of them yet. I mainly want them for the smart bulb mode, and I would have preferred to stick to ZigBee so they could build out my existing network, but the options for ZigBee switches with smart bulb mode are all more expensive.
My hope is that with some strategic placement my Z-Wave network will have enough coverage. I think it should have better range than ZigBee anyways, and my house is not very big so the signal doesn't need to travel that far.

The only real advantage is that it looks nice. I have a couple of those cover plate holders and it makes the Hue switch stick out so far which looks pretty silly, but if you don't mind that then they're fine.

If you're okay with not being able to use the switch to actually disconnect power to the bulbs, you could wire the circuit to bypass the switch and go with the Hue Wall Switch Module. It's a bit of a spendy option, but it won't need an additional hub and the module is battery powered so no neutral is no problem.

Google Home and Alexa are both so bad for home automation! I've had a SmartThings hub for a long time so I never really tried to do too much with either of them, but Home Assistant is a huge step up from that as well. I'm still trying to get my head around all the stuff I can do with automations compared to ST!

Yep, the TP-Link integration in HA provides local control for Kasa devices. It's been pretty reliable for my old Kasa smart plugs, but less so for the one newer Matter-compatible switch I have. I think that's more of a Matter issue than anything, because it works just fine when I just add it via the normal Kasa app.

I've never really heard of anything similar here in Canada, which is a shame because it would probably be called the Tim Hortons index - the "Timdex", if you will. I guess we don't get enough severe weather on a regular basis for it to be a thing.
