What #Conversations_im did was prove that the technology works. When #Matrix reinvented the wheel as an eventually consistent graph database with a JSON API, they didn't do it because #XMPP didn't work. They did it because their investors were seeking control over the entire stack.

At this point, the Google Play app review process has become a security liability. I have had an app update for #Conversations_im in the review queue since April 28th. Previously, app updates have been rejected for stupid, hallucinated reasons; this time, we are just being ignored entirely. The release is not shipping any security fixes, but imagine if it did.

@nprofile…zykx Im Prinzip ist die schon unified allerdings gibt es - weil es ein recht junges Projekt ist - mehrere Iterationen. FMD müsste auf die neuste connector library migrieren und es gibt auch schon ein branch im FMD repository.
Gotify ist sowieso kein UnifiedPush Distributor¹

Das ist ein wirklich sehr minimales Prosody setup mit 10 Zeilen config. Prosody ist idr über die Paketverwaltung installierbar und sollte dann kaum stress machen. Der 'reguläre' XMPP Account kann dann ja bei einem öffentlichen Provider liegen.

XMPP clients (at least speaking for #Conversations_im but I think this is true for most) have both the current nick and the nick at the time of sending. It's a pure design choice on which one to display / prefer. So what you are proposing would be to define design preferences not protocol interoperability.

@nprofile…z99u I say that in the post that there are a million ways to send XMPP messages. What I find neat about the solution outlined in my post is that the sender doesn’t need an external XMPP account. Like a cron job email or other status email the XMPP message is coming directly from the machine or network that generated it.

@nprofile…kewh They can replace it. But they don't have to. I'm still maintaining the Java version and in the medium term I'm planning some improvements that may or may not be immediately back ported to the native modules.
For new setups it's easier to use native modules though. Especially for prosody where the UnifiedPush module comes with the Debian package.

If you are concerned about ntfy.sh recently turning into AI-slopware, you can replace both the #UnifiedPush Distributor and the curl-based status messaging with XMPP. You can keep your existing XMPP account and simply replace ntfy's functionality with a self-hosted Prosody instance.

In XMPP you can implement a provider independent share with feature with xmpp:?message;body=hi

If the latest #Conversations_im release prompted you to upgrade your #ejabberd (Sorry about that 😔), do yourself a favor: go into the Account Details, select Server Info from the overflow menu, and check if all extensions are enabled. Some need to be explicitly enabled in the configuration file.

Over the years, I’ve fixed numerous security issues in #Conversations_im. Whether reported by third parties or flagged internally, all were resolved within 24 hours of discovery.

@nprofile…9syy Matrix needs an external notification provider do get updates (usually FCM or APNS) but can use the open source alternative UnifiedPush as well. And Conversations is a one of the available UnifiedPush distributors. The notification that travel through the XMPP are invisible though.

Conversations (via #UnifiedPush) is the backbone that gives #Matrix its reliable and timely notifications. An eventually consistent graph database is a nice concept, but it takes #XMPP to put the real-time into real-time communications.

Unfortunately spam and abuse - like anywhere on the Internet - can be a problem in public channels on the Jabber/XMPP network.
That's why the next version of #Conversations_im is combining ban and message deletion (moderation) into one step.
Let's hope you won't need that functionality very often.

Now that #Conversations_im is interfacing with Google Play Services via open-source code to retrieve a push token, we could potentially add Firebase Cloud Messaging as a last-resort fallback to the F-Droid build flavor as well.
I’m not sure if people want that. To some, the F-Droid version is a guarantee that Play Services won’t be used, even when installed on the device.

Funny thing is, interfacing directly with Google Play Services via Android IPC (Broadcast Intents) results in roughly the same amount of code as going through the library.

The firebase-messaging library is supposed to provide developers with push notification capabilities. However, it includes many dependencies that add unwanted features like analytics and other "calling home" behaviors.
The recent vulnerability in Signal¹ reminded me to finally do something I've been planning for a while: removing that library and interfacing with Play Services directly.

I understand that the endless social media debates about which messaging client is best are obnoxious. No promises on whether this is something I want to ship to end users. But I'm going to tinker around with OpenPGP (And OX) anyway. And I also have some experience with MIME.

I'm in Belgium for #FOSDEM and the #XMPP Summit, and ever since I crossed the border on Wednesday, my roaming has been extremely spotty or non-existent. It's amazing how much XMPP instant messaging traffic I can still get through a very slow EDGE connection, whereas the Mastodon API with Tusky doesn't work at all.

Betreiben kann man Signal allerdings nicht. Der source code ist zwar theoretisch offen aber ich kenne niemanden der einen Signal Server betreibt außer Signal. Geht alles durch die USA und durch Amazon Infrastruktur.
Deshalb ist Independent Messaging so wichtig. Da kann man die Server dort betreiben wo man es möchte. Sogar im eigenen Keller auf einem Raspberry Pie.

Der Digital Independence Day ist eine tolle Initiative, deren Werte wir zu 100 % teilen. Die Empfehlung für Signal ist allerdings ein Schritt in die falsche Richtung und treibt Nutzer von einem geschlossenen System in ein anderes.
Zum Glück gibt es auch Wechselrezepte für die Independent Messaging Apps #Quicksy, #Monal und #Conversations_im, die wirkliche Souveränität bieten.

One of my key takeaways from IETF123 was that we should specify #XMPP over WebTransport. However, I want to reiterate that, even without QUIC, XMPP can be pretty FAST.

@nprofile…qd7t Yes, the 'Invite to server' triggers the "Great Invitations" aka Easy Invites. Prosody and Snikket have that and since recently ejabberd as well.
This is exactly for small, family and friends deployments that don’t have open registrations.
I’m not exactly sure how the access control looks like on ejabberd. Maybe only the admin can trigger easy invites. I guess theoretically there are also deployments possible where all users could trigger them.

@nprofile…n7gw I develop a client for Android and I basically can't make any unilateral decisions without involving two client developers (Desktop + iOS) and/or two different server developers from the two major server implementations. And that's a good thing!

@nprofile…n7gw The Matrix ecosystem is primarily dominated by one VC funded company. The server that everyone uses is developed by them. The client that everyone recommends is developed by them.
There are some baby steps towards a slightly more diverse ecosystem but for now it's a toss up between whether that's going to happen and enshittification once the VCs want their money back.
XMPP on the other hand is a healthy diverse ecosystem with various stake holders.

The only relevant feature for any instant messaging app (or social app, for that matter) is: Are my friends using it? People will gladly overlook minor inconsistencies or missing features as long as they can communicate with their friends. We shouldn’t recommend #Signal as a stepping stone before Jabber/XMPP becomes "good enough," if goodness is defined by the number of people using it.

Mir steuerneutral zu ermöglichen, meine Altersvorsorge vom Vanguard FTSE All World in einen Amundi All Country World umzuschichten, wäre im Sinne von #BuyFromEU auch mal eine gute Maßnahme. Aber mit BlackRock-Merz und der 'Die Rente ist sicher'-SPD wahrscheinlich nicht zu machen.

@nprofile…jer7 Privatadresse. Anbieter für wirklich ladungsfähige Anschriften sind wirklich sehr teuer (~100 Euro im Monat).
Bei der Impressumspflicht muss der Gesetzgeber dringend nachbessern. Für Einzelunternehmer im Homeoffice ist das komplett unverhältnismäßig.
Auf der anderen Seite bringt mir das als Verbraucher auch überhaupt nichts zu wissen, dass Meta in 1 Mark Zuckerberg Drive, San Francisco, California seinen Sitz hat. Verklagen kann ich die trotzdem nicht.
