La France a toujours été plutôt de droite, mais surtout la France est de plus en plus menée par le bout du nez par les médias qui ont une influence assez hallucinante sur eux.
Depuis bientôt 20 ans, ce sont les medias (ou plutôt les milliardaires qui les contrôlent) qui décide du futur président. Il était certain que Sarkozy allait être Président dès 2004-2005 environ. Quand les Français en ont eu marre de Sarkozy, c'est Strauss-Khan qui a fait la une de tous les journaux tout le temps, sauf qu'il y a eu couac. Hollande est arrivé là par hasard, mais ça a permis à l'oligarchie de faire entrer un de ses protégés dans les cercles du pouvoir, et Macron a été "élu" dès 2015 environ.
Ensuite, ça aurait dû être Le Pen, mais cette justice est une empêcheuse de tourner en rond, et pour l'instant on sait pas trop, mais je te promets que dans moins de six mois, il y aura quelqu'un qui fera toutes les couvertures de magazines et qui sera dans les infos en permanence. Bolloré essaie de placer toujours Bardella, mais je ne sais pas si les milliardaires un peu moins fascistes vont être d'accord. Peut-être, vu comment tous les medias ont rendu le fascisme plus acceptable que la gauche ces derniers temps.
Et c'est aussi pour cela que Mélenchon candidat c'est une défaite assurée pour la gauche. Plein de gens à gauche ne l'aime pas, et les électeurs pas très politisés et pas très engagés en général (et ce sont qui élisent les présidents car ils votent où va le vent i.e. le battage médiatique) détestent aussi Mélenchon en partie parce qu'il est diabolisé depuis des années par ces médias dépendants.

Attention, les personnes concernées disent aussi que dire quoique ce soit de négatif sur Israël c'est antisémite. Donc arrêtons de le faire et prosternons-nous devant Saint Netanyahu.
Mais pour en revenir à la caricature, ce qui fait qu'une caricature soit antisémite ou pas, c'est son propos, pas la tronche du personnage...
On a un peu trop souvent tendance à confondre la carte et le territoire de nos jours.
Et le "oh la la, les dessins ressemblent aux dessins antisémites d'avant-guerre" que dire sans que les "personnes concernées" crient à l'antisémitisme ?
La tronche de Hanouna, voila quoi... Je ne vois honnêtement pas comment la caricaturer autrement. (maintenant c'était peut-être pas obligé de la caricaturer, une photo aurait suffit)
Et pour en revenir à Netanyahu, sa caricature est dans les règles de l'art de la caricature. Si agrandir les nez et les oreilles des gens qui ont des grands nez et des grandes oreilles c'est antisémite, arrêtons les caricatures.
Finalement, "crier à l'antisémitisme à tous les coins de rue." En France, oui et encore oui.
Encore une fois, c'est devenu une arme politique pour tuer tout discours négatifs envers Israël et ses apologistes de tous pays, et surtout de France.

#Andor delivered once again. I'll never stop raving about this show.
Vague spoilers about episodes 4, 5, 6 of the season 2:
I have a terrible feeling about the second half of the season, too much foreshadowing and misdirection, not to mention the character is never heard about later, yes, I'm talking about Bix. I want her to have a happy ending, but seeing who Andor is at the beginning of Rogue One, I doubt it's going to happen.
A few more observations: I love how little by little we are shown that Luthen's ways are unsustainable to form a Rebellion. Sure, he's all about efficiency, but successful resistance is not about losing your humanity for that efficiency. Maybe he's learning, though? That's why he assigned Andor and Bix to that mission at the end? Vel is learning it too the hard way.
I'm not sure how Saw Guerrera fits in the grand scale of things. We already know that his philosophy will fail. However, one detail I noticed is that he already has an army (including X-Wing fighters). Maybe the more martial side of the Rebel Alliance will be born from his ranks?
One last funny thing: The Ghor language was very disturbing to me and I really had a hard time reading the subtibles and many times I realized after the fact that I was not actually understanding that language that sounded almost exactly like mine (when there are English subtitles and French is being spoken, my brain kinda disconnects from the subtitles, and this is what happened there several times, my brain thought it was hearing French, and I had to consciously remind myself that this was not French and that I needed to register the subtitles and not the spoken words).
Also, while I love the shout out to the French resistance (which inspired the Rebel Alliance from the beginnings of Star Wars) the reference was a bit too heavy-handed at times: the 1940s style of clothing, the streets and the roofs of the city, etc. But I shouldn't complain about this.
One last thing: Siryl is such an amazing character that I love to despise. The perfect wannabe fascist who is played like a puppet by the real fascists.

A few days ago, an American woman posted something about warning foreigners to not come to the US as it was unsafe for us.
I know she meant well, but her post reeked of "main character syndrome" something a lot of Americans suffer from. In this case, she basically was warning the NPCs that foreigners are (in many US eyes and minds), because apparently we couldn't figure it out without an American telling us. (or maybe that's because she's clueless about other countries, so she assumed we're also clueless about other countries, including hers?) In any case, she was not giving out a good image.
I replied, as nicely as I could, but also a bit sarcastically, that she didn't need to worry, we were not planning on going anyway. Adding a link showing how travel to the US from Europe has plummeted these past few months.
She replied that as she was a military kid (btw, this is not the flex you think it is with non-Americans) and as her father was on the beaches of Normandy on D-Day so this was not laughing matter.
So I replied to her that as I was a European kid and as my four grandparents lived under Nazi occupation and actually experienced it, I was not joking.
And... She blocked me, I guess. The entire conversation is gone.

I've watched three episodes of Severance and my current feeling is that I'm quite bored with the "office" parts of the show. The outside is interesting and engaging, but I care less and less about the office part.
Maybe they speak to people who work in open spaces (one of my goals in life that I'm proud to have reached is to never have to work in such an environment). Are we supposed to be intrigued? All the mysteries will "cheap" to me, so far.
On the other hand, I do find the outside world interesting and engaging.
Will the office parts get better or is that show not for me?

I'll CW my food posts when vegans CW theirs (and stop putting "vegan" in their profile as if it was a badge of honor - well, it's actually useful, I know it's people I shouldn't follow)
As far as eating disorders are concerned (although being vegan can be considered one), I understand, but that's about protecting yourself. It's not other people's responsibility to self-censor. However, it is our responsibility to use hashtags more. Honestly, I think they're way more useful than CWs. People should be more mindful into hashtaging their posts (and we should all push more for it, like there's a push for alt-text in pictures). It has the double advantage of allowing people who want to see more about a topic to see more, and people who don't want to see a topic to hide it.
CWs just hide possibly interesting content to all in the event that maybe just maybe a random person could be uncomfortable with something you said. Not a very efficient method.

And also, I do find the concept of being offended by food completely ludicrous. Once again, if someone is, it's not our problem, it's theirs.

Mélenchon was great in the 2000s, early 2010s, but I don't know if he got too old or what, he has become one of Putin's useful idiots in recent years.
Like many French leftists, he hates the US so much that he's instantly friends with the US's enemies, even when it was Putin's. So there must be a lot of confusion in his mind right now.

Alright, so a mbin instance has taken two of my posts (that I wrote here on my profile) and included them in a topic as if I had posted them there myself. It doesn't look like a share or a repost, it looks like I went there and I wrote it there. (see screenshot)
Except that I had no idea it had happened, I couldn't even tell which instance had done it before someone found it for me.
Apparently, the posts were extracted from a hashtag feed.
I figured out because I started to get tons of replies (not always very nice) from accounts that looked like Reddit accounts. You know "TerribleYusRname96" style with no profile pictures. Most being Lemmy accounts.
Does anyone know about that? And especially how to prevent it from happening, because I find the process quite misleading and disingenuous. At least, show that it's a post from somewhere else and notify the author.

This "shit post" as you call it, is a post I posted on my Firefish account, addressed to my followers and a few extra people and ended up somehow republished here (wherever "here" is, a Lemmy or Mbin instance I assume, seeing how accounts like yours look on my feed) looking like I manually did it.

As far as randos replying there vs randos replying here, in theory, it shouldn't make any difference, but in practice, you know how Reddit always has this "snappy/sarcastic" atmosphere? And the fact that you don't really care who you reply to helps push the tone in that direction? Well, I find it in Lemmy too (and in some of the answers I got) and I'm not a fan of having this in my replies, basically. Just an assumption from me, but it could be people who moved from Reddit to Lemmy without really caring and being aware of the Fediverse beyond. The fact that a lot of the accounts replying to me didn't even have a profile picture makes me think it's that.

Ha! The famed meeting that could have been an email. I'm lucky to have only one of those a year, but it's right now.
Also luckily, nowadays it's on Teams, so I can do something else in the meantime.
The only trick is that it's in Japanese (and the speaker speaks fast) and it's difficult to only vaguely pay attention in the unlikely event I'm mentioned (my level of Japanese only allows me to "do my best to try to understand as much as possible" or "completely tune out and it just becomes noise" nothing in between)

Why don't you just migrate your account? Create the new account first, boost the unfinished conversations so you can continue them with the new account, and then migrate?
Also you can have a solo instance that is hosted somewhere if you can't deal with the technical aspects. That's what I'm doing with my Mastodon account. I advise SpaceHost or MastoHost.

My mute list is getting longer and longer, and yet you always find a way to sneak your political posts in my timeline because not only you never contextualize anything, but now you don't even say the things, you allude to them and the people involved.

I understand that, but yes, I can, not using Insta is pretty much impossible at the moment (it is for me, so I don't see how it wouldn't be for her.) At least we're "lucky" for some reason, here in Japan, Meta will continue fact checking (at least for now.)
And yes, I'm all about teaching her instead of forbidding, but at the moment, she's not really willing to learn from Dad (she's in her "I'm not a kid anymore, my parents and especially my dad have nothing to teach me anymore" phase)

What do you all think? And by "you all" I mean people living in Japan.
At a time it's wise to leave Meta or, if not possible, reduce our activity there to a minimum. I'm facing a conundrum.
Just like every Japanese teen, my daughter wants to use Instagram. I told her she could when she turns 13 (and she's already not happy about that because all of her friends are already 13 and/or have parents who don't care or are not very computer-literate).
She'll be 13 soon, but... well... It's a terrible idea to join Meta right now. But it's also not a good idea to cut my daughter from a major thing for Japanese teen (and she'll be mad at me for years if I refuse to install Instagram on her phone)
And I get it, while I've been using Facebook daily for 20 years now (yep, I had a .edu e-mail address back when it was the only way to join) I'm slowly but surely quitting. However, I barely use Instagram but it's impossible to not use it at all when you live in Japan.
Of course, I mentioned Pixelfed (but I think the age limit is 16 for some reason) but she's not exactly a trendsetter among her friends.
Hmmm....
So, parents of teens in Japan, what's your take on this?

Je compatis. Petit, genre 6-7 ans, je trouvais que la croix gammée, c'était quand même un super chouette symbôle, bien fichu et tout... En plus comme j'étais le seul à savoir bien la faire, un jour je me l'étais dessinée sur la main, et aussi sur la main des copains. Ma mère a fait une drôle de tête quand je suis rentré à la maison. I was on Substack. I left a while ago because I had zero trust in the company, but... While people making money with their newsletter always advise moving to Ghost or Beehiiv or whatnot. However, one good thing about Substack is that it is free to use for people not making money with their newsletters. Ghost or Beehiiv are not cheap by any means.
I know I have my blogs and social media, but sometimes I feel like I still need a newsletter (to make announcements or share thoughts that may not fit on my other places). Is anyone familiar with a free-to-use decent platform?

Exactly. Ogijima used to have a shitload of stray cats (about 200) and it started to become famous as a cat island, which first baffled me because those cats were nasty and not healthy for the most part. But cat tourists don't see the reality, they only see what they imagine seeing. One day I saw an otaku looking guy, sitting in the middle of a dozen cats who were all over him, and he looked like it was the best moment of his life. All I could think was how many diseases and fleas he was going to bring back home.
But the worst was the cat tourists behavior overall. They didn't care about the island at all, nor about its inhabitants. They would run around hunting for cats, they would enter private properties, it was insane.
Luckily, one day, the islanders had had enough (although some wanted to use the cats to promote tourism, despite how destructive those tourists were) and all the cars were spaded.
Their numbers dwindled very quickly (that will let you imagine how healthy there were) and nowadays there is only a dozen or so, and cat tourists move on to another place.

These days, when I give a written assignement to my students, I get three kinds of results.
1. Those who write everything in Japanese first, and then translate with DeepL at best, a shitty automatic translator at worst.
T2. hose who write in Japanese first, and then translate manually. Better, but still not great. I don't fully blame them, they were brainwashed by some teachers in high school to think that expressing yourself in another language means expressing yourself in your language and then translate (even some good students suffer from this.) Teachers who think that teaching English is translating every English they encounter into Japanese (and then you wonder why Japan has abysmal rankings in foreign languages proficiency)
3. Those who actually write in English themselves, but who don't seem aware of the existence of spelling and grammar checkers.

The topic has never been about giving away your location but giving context WHEN you're talking about your location. To not say "this country" to not say "here" or "us" and things like that. Which is, in my experience, something Americans constantly do without even realizing it (and getting upset when you point it out to them), hence my original comment.

Alright, I try to talk less and less about US politics online for a bunch of reasons. Mostly: I'm not American and this shouldn't be a part of my life, and I'm doing my best so that it doesn't become a bigger part of my online life than it should. (because of that, I have muted a bunch of related keywords and I may or may not see your replies, so that you know.)
So...
Here is how I think things are going to go with this US election. It's a feeling I had since the day Harris became Trump's opponent, and it only becomes stronger and stronger every day, even more so after this debate.
Trump and his team (or at least his team, it's unclear how much he's aware of his surroundings) have given up on trying to win the election. Just given up.
They know they've already lost.
What they're going to do is deny that the results are legit, just like in 2020, but with more force and more planning, and they're going to attempt a coup. An actual coup. Much better prepared and planned than what they tried on January 6th.
And today's debate was a part of this. What every sane person saw was a guy who's totally crazy rambling nonsense, but never forget that when he does that regardless of whether he realizes it or no, he's not talking to you. He's not talking to the mysterious and elusive undecided voters. He's talking to his base.
He's not trying to convince anyone with his ramblings. He's trying to energize his base. He's trying to make them angrier than ever. He's firing them up for the after the election.

Brown is not dark red. Brown is a mix of all three primary colors.
Burgundy is dark red.
Yes, language affects how we perceive certain concepts, but only very slightly.
Russian speakers see the same tones of colors as English speakers do.
Multilingual people's perception of the world doesn't change when they code switch or change the language of their thinking.
The Sapir–Whorf hypothesis has been mostly disproven. (And is very monolingual Anglophone centric)
