If you are interested in ham radio, Meshtastic, Reticulum, mesh networks & emergency comms you should consider volunteering to help them out on a panel or workshop. I hear that they would prefer veterans but it’s not necessarily veterans only for these spots. So don’t let that deter you from submitting if you have something to contribute.
It was absolutely incredible what the @nprofile…64qy accomplished during the Hurricane Helene disasters response with meshtasic and ham radio. If you were involved in that project, or another like it involving radio, definitely submit. Or if you are good at explaining radio or mesh networks to normies and beginners also apply. What is Reticulum?
Reticulum is a cryptography-based networking stack for building both local and wide-area networks with readily available hardware, that can continue to operate under adverse conditions, such as extremely low bandwidth and very high latency.
Reticulum allows you to build wide-area networks with off-the-shelf tools, and offers end-to-end encryption, forward secrecy, autoconfiguring cryptographically backed multi-hop transport, efficient addressing, unforgeable packet acknowledgements and more.
From a users perspective, Reticulum allows the creation of applications that respect and empower the autonomy and sovereignty of communities and individuals. Reticulum enables secure digital communication that cannot be subjected to outside control, manipulation or censorship.
Reticulum enables the construction of both small and potentially planetary-scale networks, without any need for hierarchical or beaureucratic structures to control or manage them, while ensuring individuals and communities full sovereignty over their own network segments.
Reticulum is a complete networking stack, and does not need IP or higher layers, although it is easy to utilise IP (with TCP or UDP) as the underlying carrier for Reticulum. It is therefore trivial to tunnel Reticulum over the Internet or private IP networks. Reticulum is built directly on cryptographic principles, allowing resilience and stable functionality in open and trustless networks.
No kernel modules or drivers are required. Reticulum can run completely in userland, and will run on practically any system that runs Python 3. Reticulum runs well even on small single-board computers like the Pi Zero.

Coax & transmission line loss in radio:
When setting up a ham radio, choosing the right transmission line is all about trade-offs. Signal loss increases with both frequency and cable length. Cheaper options like RG-58 are flexible and affordable but introduce more signal loss, especially at higher frequencies. On the other hand, premium cables like LMR-400 offer much lower signal loss but come with a higher cost and reduced flexibility. The key is to balance these trade-offs by keeping cable runs short and selecting a line that fits both your operating frequency and budget.
Signal loss is measured in decibels (dB), a unit that quantifies the reduction in signal strength. A 3 dB loss cuts the signal in half, while a 10 dB loss means only 10% of the original signal remains. Every cable has trade-offs, so understanding dB helps you compare options and minimize losses for the best performance in your setup.
Meshtastic or reticulum mesh devices are transmitting and receiving in the 915 mhz range. The shorter transmission lines are preferable for this range as it lossy up at those frequencies.

Vanity Call Signs in Ham Radio: A blank canvas to express yourself
Normally, amateur radio operators receive a randomly assigned callsign when they get licensed. However, with a vanity callsign, you can request a custom call sign as long as it fits the formatting rules specific to your nation and region.
Much like vanity license plates, vanity callsigns can be funny, clever, or even downright offensive. Amateur radio operators often get creative, choosing callsigns that play on words, include inside jokes, or reflect their personality. While many are lighthearted or witty, some have pushed boundaries to the point of being controversial or offensive. Some were only discovered to be offensive after they were issued and they had to be revoked. Some of the ones that were revoked were subsequently reissued and upon being rediscovered, they were revoked again. To see some of these look up “Hall of Fame Vanity Call Signs” on the internet.
