How has no one invented a good front door pepper spray deterrent. Looks like an electric plate but conceals directional pepper spray. Activated from inside with pull string to avoid boobytrap laws (it’s self defense if you observe a threat and activate it yourself. It’s a booby trap if it’s activated by a trip line). Pair it with a camera that only records to your local device and only when activated. That would do 10x more than most noise based security measures.

During Covid it was the deep freeze in Jan/feb 2022 that actually popped thing in my business. A few chemical plants in Texas had pipes burst and from the day that was announced things went parabolic. Last night there was a fire at a plant in TX and a big Saudi supplier declared force majeure. Today feels like the same order of magnitude as the deep freeze but it’s not clear yet if it’s going to last as long. My instinct is it will.

I own a chemical import and distribution business. Every time there is a disruption in global trade that leads to massive inflation I feel it 2-3 months before the headlines. Things have been tense for weeks but overnight the dam broke. Prices are up 20-50% on some products overnight. This is the stuff that goes into making the stuff that makes the world go round. Fertilizer inputs, antifreeze, break fluid, bobble head dolls. All of it is downstream of my business. Could just be a blip but it feels like it felt in Q12022.

A few years ago I was walking alone at dusk in the woods near my house and was apparently near a nest. I looked up and saw an owl. Thought that’s cool and kept walking. Looked up at a different tree and there was another owl. I thought, that’s weird and took a video of it and talked to it for a bit. Kept walking and saw another owl on a tree ahead of me. Immediately realized what was happening. It was the same owl and since it flies silently I didn’t realize it was following me. Then it dove at my face with talons out. I dropped to the ground, broke my phone and sprained my wrist. Got up and started running and it took another pass at the back of my head. I didn’t stop to look back. This is the video of it watching me.

From a historical perspective it’s the remnants of the intentionally divided Middle East as designed by the British empire. It doesn’t excuse Israel of its role in the world but it fits much more cleanly than this weird upside down world where a country with an economy the size of Spain is somehow the kingmaker. I find myself getting frothed up about Israel’s misdeeds too but in other world events usually when I have a strong emotional reaction to something related to current events I realize in retrospect I was being manipulated. I’m not 100% convinced by Simon’s perspective but it is making me reexamine my priors. I still think Israel’s treatment of Palestine and thirst for war and technocratic gulags is disturbing, but that doesn’t mean they are the ones pulling the strings.

The best part of having a podcast focused on ethics and hard money is making my kids listen to it on the drive to school. Hard to have a 20 minute conversation with kids about why you shouldn’t lie. Easier to make them sit through my podcast.
Leads to lots of great questions like “Dad are you famous?” and “Dad, can you please turn that off?”.
“No” is the answer to both questions (since I try to practice what I preach about honesty).

In July 2008, oil hit $147 a barrel which is still its all time high. That was likely one of the straws that broke the back of the global economy. The price of oil is upstream of almost everything else in our society. Inflation adjusted (if you take CPI at face value) we would have to hit $214/barrel today to surpass that number. I’m not sure what I’m struggling with more, that much inflation over the last 18 years or that it looks like we might be making a run to break the previous ATH.

This is why I can’t call myself a Christian. I love God, I love Jesus. I love my family and I love nature and creation. I also love other people. The idea that in this big beautiful diverse world with a billion paths to walk, that God would limit us to one and divide us among those who follow it and those who wander or tread other well worn paths is antithetical to everything else I see in creation. A beaver builds damns. A bird builds nests. Both bring glory to God. Stop telling people there is only one path to eternal life and that you found it before them and they’re damned if they don’t follow you. The fog of war is already thick. Nothing is ever confirmed until long after the war is over. But, it sounds like the US has bombed a girls school leading to the death of 150 students (unforgivable) sunk a lightly armed navy ship 2000 miles away from the theatre of war and then left 87 sailors to drown instead of rescuing them (violating the Geneva convention). We have bombed civilian infrastructure including water treatment plants. We have destroyed oil terminals leading to massive environmental problems that will never be cleaned up. We have declared that we are pursuing unconditional surrender from a proud population of 92 million which is a deal Iran can’t accept and we know that. My souls cries out for the violence to stop. I was in high school for 9/11 and remote violence is all I’ve seen from my country. It tears at me that my work, my savings my taxes fund this kind of shortsightedness. As I write this oil is nearing $115 a barrel. This war does not serve US interests. When I plugged my nose and voted for Trump it was a vote for three things: Free Ross, less war, and stop persecuting Bitcoin companies. That was naive and it will be my last attempt at voting for a change. But there will be change. This is the boomers last stand.

The current direct costs of the war in Iran are estimated at $1B per day. Thats ~$2.99 per US person or $234/month per household. That says nothing of the other conflicts we support around the world. It says nothing about the increased costs of fuel food and other essentials. And war destroys capital assuring that the market will be less able to serve people on the other side. It also says nothing of the horrific loss of life on both sides and the generational trauma that creates in the world. None of this will be paid for in current dollars. It is possible only because the US controls a money printer. The war is being fought on the back of unborn generations who will have to service the debts we are incurring now for a war no one voted for. A war with no clear objective. A war our leaders know we the American people do not want. So who is our enemy? Iran or the system of bankers, corporate lobbies and politicians who perpetuate this system? You can defund them today by moving your time and energy into a money they cannot inflate. When they inflate the currency, they are stealing from you in the future to get what they want now without your consent. That’s why I Bitcoin.
