I had a meeting this morning with a local organization for deploying another Frigate NVR, this time with possibly up to 20 cameras.
They want it to be completely "offline", not accessible from the internet. So planning on having on an isolated network with Frigate running on MOS (modular operating system, based on Devuan), which made deploying Frigate with docker easier.
They are planning to go ahead. This will be my second local installation of Frigate NVR.

I don’t want to run a mitigation that doesn’t need to be run. Just in case that introduces a problem in a system that is currently working fine and not exploitable.
So from what I’ve learned so far:
lsmod | grep algif_aead
this checks to see if the exploitable module is loaded.
You can check if the module is present in the system, but not currently loaded with:
modinfo algif_aead 2>/dev/null
If that returns information, the module is present and could be loaded.
But you have to have root privileges to load the module.
So my logic is that if
lsmod | grep algif_aead
returns nothing, the vulnerable Linux kernel module is not loaded and therefore not exploitable… even if the module is present on the system but not loaded.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Question on the #CopyFail Linux vulnerability:
If "lsmod | grep algif_aead" returns nothing, is the vulnerability not exploitable?
Most of my Linux machines are running older, non-patched kernels, but it doesn't seem like the affected kernel module is active... so does that mean a system that returns nothing for "lsmod | grep algif_aead" is not at risk for this exploit?

I agree that these are not mutually exclusive, as you posit.
However, I also think it likely that most people will succumb to the temptation to let "AI" think for them... but this is nothing new, as it is what happens with when people trust Media Establishment and go along with Group Think.
So it may be possible that a smaller number of people can retain their own intellect and creativity while leveraging the "AI" tool.
I am finding answers to Linux tech how-to knowledge faster with Brave search summaries (marketed as AI) than with general search previously available.
I intend to be careful and cautious, though, and I am not fond of the Chat-bot concept that attempts to make summaries in the likeness of a person (Dune reference).

Maybe.
There's a possibility that a lot of these companies relying on AI generated code will just completely fail when customers leave due to their products or services not working.
I have very little idea what the future holds for this topic... but I am not optimistic about "tons of jobs".
I have a friend who is all on-board with "how awesome AI is becoming" with helping him do his work (employed at an engineering start-up company).
What do you think? What are you seeing?

I do not have any recent experience with that, as I usually just avoid using PPAs.
Haven't looked it up, but I don't think PPAs will play nice with the Debian (Devuan) base.
Are there a lot of PPAs that you are using? Or just a few?

I am slowly using more applications associated with KDE and qt.
I was an Ubuntu fanboy for nearly 15 years, so most of my Linux experience has been with GTK based programs and desktop environments (typing this from a Cinnamon desktop now, as it is the DE on my laptop along with the i3 window manager).
Possible big step: Yesterday I installed Artix Linux with the latest KDE Plasma desktop environment on a computer for family room use (mostly videos and music).
My children have been using Krita for art and Kdenlive for video editing for years.

What a difference a docking station makes.
I like ThinkPad laptops, but I added a monitor, keyboard and mouse to a my ThinkPad's docking station today. Made a huge difference. I was able to get some work done that I probably wouldn't have completed if not for the large monitor and ease of working with full keyboard and mouse.

Good points.
Not AI generated. It is a still picture from a video promoting a 3D printed monitor stand design that uses wooden dowels.
The thing under the monitor is a smaller monitor. Probably used as some kind of status, heads up. I have never used one like that.
I go back and forth between liking one monitor and two. Right now, I have one monitor, but my home desktop has two.

Picture is not of my desk... but something I am aspiring to.
I need to make some improvements to my computer desk setup.
Some practical, such as the chair that I am using is giving me some back pain (I prefer a standing desk, but do not have that in my front reception area of my shop yet).
Some is just for looks. The custom desk setups that look really good or are customized with 3D printed parts are really appealing to me.

Just talked with a customer who will be buying two refurbished computers from me with Linux.
He had already been using Linux for years. Had an older ASUS desktop with a hard disk drive (HDD) and Ubuntu 18.04
He requested a replacement with a slightly newer ASUS desktop and an SSD. He does want to stay with Ubuntu, so will be installing the latest release of that.
He will also be buying a refurbished ThinkPad T560, also with Ubuntu 25.10

I am having trouble getting Linux (Linux Mint Debian Edition) to boot after installing on a Dell Optiplex 5040 and 3040 models with UEFI booting.
I am pretty sure it would work fine in Legacy mode.
Since UEFI is newer, I am guessing that is the recommendation... but will Linux work fine on Legacy boot with current kernels in the current year? Any reasons or features that I really should have with UEFI? Or is Legacy boot going to be fine?

For testing, it is fine. The 16GB m.2 2242 SATA SSD is what came with the ChromeBox initially. I just left it for my testing.
Depending on my use case, I would probably upgrade the SSD to a larger capacity. The longer regular size 2280 SSDs won't fit, so another 2242 size SSD is needed. I do have a couple of that size with larger capacity already on hand.

I liberated an HP Chromebox G1 with CoreBoot using the MrChromeBox script.
Now running Artix Linux with KDE, as I'd like to get more experience with KDE. With the regular system update commands, the most recent KDE 6.6 that was just released last week was pulled down and installed without problems.
I also installed XLibre as a replacement for Xorg.
So far, so good.

Recently, I've been thinking quite a bit about Linux (and possibly NetBSD) on Chromebook and Chromebox hardware.
I've used a Chromebook with Linux as my daily driver laptop for quite a while a couple years ago. Switched back to a ThinkPad for a bit more CPU power and memory.
I see a lot of value in these Chromebooks that have been liberated with CoreBoot. I posted about it quite a bit a few years ago. May have to get back into it.
Things look like they have changed a bit. Before, a lot of the newer Chromebooks could not be liberated. Now, it looks like pretty much every Chrome device with an Intel processor can be. That's a big improvement.

A fresh install of Linux Mint Debian Edition 7 worked fine the ThinkPad P70 with no hardware or BIOS setting changes.
CachyOS failed to install. First attempt failed to install the new bootloader, second time I chose grub instead and that also failed.
So CachyOS failed the first test of getting it installed.
BIOS may be set to boot to Legacy first instead of UEFI. That may be a problem for CachyOS, so I'll change that and attempt to install again.

I use phone.com ... not sure that I'd recommend them strongly, but it works for me. Their web interface can be a bit clunky.
I was also looking into OpenPhone.com, but looks like they've rebranded to quo.com and are heavily investing in "AI", which I am not as interested in.
So phone.com works for me, but I would also be interested in learning about alternative services that offer something similar.

I can use my desktop computers at home and work, too. I am not tied to a single device. I have zero stress about losing or damaging "my phone".

This is a customer's computer. He's been quite happy with a refurbished Dell Vostro 230 desktop for years with Ubuntu Mate.
He only got it to me because there was a power outage while he was applying updates and he wasn't sure how to fix the broken package state.
I fixed that, then upgraded from Ubuntu 22.04 to 24.04, as the Firefox snap was broken. The upgrade to 24.04 fixed that. Works fine now.
Intel Core 2 Duo still kicking and in active use.

As for deep cleaning:
You'll probably want to do a thermal paste replacement, if you haven't done that yet during the time you've owned it.
While the laptop is open, you can use some kind of air blower to blow the dust out.
While you have the keyboard out, you can use a cue tip or damp cleaning rag to clean the area and edges where the keyboard went.
Avoid rubbing alcohol on anything except the top exterior of the laptop, as the alcohol can melt some plastics, especially the keyboard springs.

Today I used a Toshiba power adapter to power an Intel NUC mini desktop computer.
Made me stop and reflect.
I rarely see Toshiba brand laptops anymore. They've almost all aged out and are no longer in regular use.
I believe the brand name was purchased by another company and there are some new laptops being made, but they are rarely sold in the US (I may be wrong about all that, as I didn't confirm before writing this).

The graphics requirements for Kazeta are bit heavier that I thought at first:

So not able to run on cheaply available mini PCs or Intel NUCs, as they don't have enough graphics "oomf" and can't easily have a graphics card added.

that php7.4-fpm service has been running for 8 months with no downtime or restart. I could try restarting the php7.4-fpm service... but not sure why that would help based on that the server has almost no load on it.
Maybe worth trying to see what restarting that service does.

Okay. PHP website question:
A client has an apache2 web server with multiple PHP based websites on it, probably around 20.
One of the websites just started taking a really long time to respond, at first, but then when it finally does load it seems to work mostly fine with quick response times to subsequent page loads for sub pages on the website.
The other websites on the same physical server and apache2 seem to be fine and do not exhibit this behavior.
The dev site version has a tool to show "build time" in the footer. It is really long on first load (often over two minutes) but then super quick after the client session has made a connection.
Any suggestions on how I should go about testing to figure out what is wrong?
Note: I am not the PHP programmer for these websites, but the sysadmin, but I am in close communication with the programmer.

Was the Hitachi originally in a ThinkPad or other Lenovo device? Sometimes there were proprietary locks on really old drives but I thought that only was a concern on PATA drives before SATA.

Consider the ThinkPad L14, which has two slots for memory module upgrades. The T490 and T14 models have memory soldered to the board and one memory slot.
The L14 comes in both Intel and AMD variants. It often comes without a backlit keyboard (as these were often sold as budget models), but the keyboard can be replaced with a backlit keyboard if you want that feature and the one you buy does not have it.

It runs pretty well on older hardware (back to a point).
My sons regularly play on their ThinkPad X220T laptops and it performs alright on the Intel i7 second gen processor and Intel graphics. Of course, it does a lot better on their desktop computers with dedicated Radeon graphics cards.
My daughter plays on her ThinkPad T470s and enjoys it on that laptop.

Today I sold a ThinkPad T560 laptop to someone who crossed state lines to get it (my storefront isn't that far from the border).
T560 was upgrade to 16GB memory (PC3L), a 256GB SATA SSD and had an Intel i5-6300U processor. It was in excellent condition.
Operating System was Linux Mint Debian Edition, which I pre-installed. He may install PopOS, as he's been using that for quite a while from a USB flash drive on another computer.

Two out of the three laptops I got back to customers yesterday had Linux on them. The majority. Not bad!
One sale (mentioned in another post) of a ThinkPad L15 laptop with Linux Mint Debian Edition.
The second laptop was a service where the customer had run out of storage space on a small SSD on an HP with Devuan Linux - I used CloneZilla to clone to a larger SSD and fixed a few other things.
The third laptop was a SSD replacement, fresh Windows 11 installation with data recovery and transfer.

I just got a refurbished ThinkPad L15 Gen 1 laptop out to a local customer.
He asked for Linux, so I recommended and pre-installed Linux Mint Debian Edition.
I should have taken a screenshot of the 'fetch' output on this laptop. Nice upgrades. Intel i7 (10th gen), upgraded to 32GB memory (two 16GB modules) and a new 1TB Crucial NVME SSD.

Is the NVIDIA Quadro M1000M graphics in the ThinkPad P50 laptop useful at all with Linux?
Laptop has a pretty powerful i7 processor, but not officially supported by Windows 11 and the NVIDIA Quadro M1000M graphics has also been discontinued from support by nVidia (not sure what that means).

Ugg. Yes. It is a really bad trend.
It is one reason I like the L15 over the T15 as it has no memory soldered to the board and two memory slots.
This T15 was supposed to be for a customer who was buying today. Looks like I'll have to delay that due to the bad memory.

Anybody using the "snoopy" package on a Linux server?

I need to log admin user activity and this seems like a decent tool. However, it does say:
"This type of monitoring can be bypassed by hostile users, and should not be considered a secure replacement for tools like auditd."
I do not have any experience with "auditd" either.

I keep on saying I want to do more with NetBSD... and I'm going to.
From what I understand NetBSD will continue to work on 32 bit systems for quite a long time yet.

LMDE 6 EOL
LMDE 6 will reach End of Life on January 1st 2026.
Past that date the repositories will continue to work but the release will no longer receive bug fixes or security updates.
To upgrade the 64-bit version of LMDE 6 to LMDE 7 visit https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=4571.
The 32-bit version will unfortunately not be upgradable. Proper support for 32-bit was dropped by many upstream projects (Debian, Ubuntu, Mozilla, Chromium) so we cannot continue to support this architecture anymore.

I am about to upgrade a ThinkPad L15 Gen 2 laptop from 16GB to 32GB of memory (RAM).
The L series laptops have two memory upgrade slots. They are a bit thicker than the T series and have a better quality build and design than the E series ThinkPads.

I just replaced another CR2032 "coin" battery in a Dell desktop computer. Seems that nearly every Dell desktop computer I work on or refurbish needs this battery replaced.
I have a stash of new CR2032 batteries on hand, as I need them often.

I don't think we want to introduce use of hardware security keys like the Yubikey.
MFA with OTP would be enough to meet the requirement and not require extra hardware.

Has anyone used this?
OTP (one time passwords) for SSH access.
Sounds like an extra headache. I am working with a company that has to jump through some "security hoops" and adding MFA to admin accounts is one of the boxes to check.
This may be one way to do that.

I believe I used Ubuntu for nearly 15 years. Looking back, I was a fanboy. Next logical step was Debian based distros, as they had the familiarity from Ubuntu but without Snaps and other annoyances that come with Ubuntu.
Now, most of my installs are Debian, Linux Mint Debian Edition or Devuan.
I plan on doing more with NetBSD

Today I sold a refurbished HP laptop... specifically because it had a DVD-RW drive.
Customer wanted to be able to make DVDs of his own talks to physically give to people.
I told him that some people may no longer have DVD players and that he could put a video file of his messages on a USB drive to give to people who didn't have a DVD player.

I think I have a way of dealing with that. It does that random file naming thing to be able to have past versions and then uses an internal database to keep track of which file is at what path and which version.
So a bit complicated... but for a reason.
I think I'll be able to have backups of the files in the places that you expect them to be with folder and file names.
That way, I can export to to another solution or restore if the main server goes down and needs to be rebuilt (but I'll have backup of that, too).

Good to hear your thoughts on this.
We also host Nextcloud for one client and also another instance for ourselves. I use it most for calendaring.
From here on out, though, we are looking for a different solution for "cloud" type file storage: an alternative to Microsoft OneDrive and Google Drive.
We are pretty confident we've found a good solution in OpenCloud, a fork of OwnCloud Infinite Scale. Need to do some more testing, though.
