BIP-110 goes back to 80b op_returns which works for hashing (timestamping) purposes so I don’t see what the problem is. It prevents arbitrary data greater than 80b

This is a fundamentally self-contradictory statement: "That is the value that Saylor is creating. He is building Bitcoin's yield curve."
Bitcoin has no yield, so building a yield curve just means reintroducing the credit-money stack that bitcoin was designed to retire: someone, somewhere, is now taking leverage and credit risk so that "bitcoin" can pay a coupon it cannot natively pay.
With MSTR and the preferreds, we are very much on a path towards what Jeff is describing:
1. Over time, more of the money that would've just bought bitcoin buys
the yield product instead, because it pays income and feels safer. At
the margin, the preferred quietly becomes a substitute for buying
bitcoin. Not in today's snapshot, but that's the direction every year
this thing grows.
2. Strategy doesn't lend its coins, but the preferred itself becomes
collateral out in the world. One coin sits reserved while the claim on
it gets pledged and borrowed against again and again, in margin
accounts and structured products.
3. Even if none of that happened: moving more and more coins off the
network into a handful of company balance sheets, parked at two or
three custodians, is centralization on its own.
These all contribute to the centralization of bitcoin when you have infinitely expanding claims on top of a fixed base. Eventually, when there is a bank run, the system tries to change the rules to stay solvent. Because of the nodes and the protocol, it will not succeed this time.

Tbh I can’t say for sure and don’t know that it’s possible to say for sure. I’ve largely formed my opinion on Bukele from my reputation graph: those that I trust saying that they’ve gone deep with him on the bitcoin side and he “gets it” but must play the game his own way.
Everyone will make the transition in their own way - and it’s possible to throw rocks at any one person making the transition from any one of our own glass houses. I prefer to direct attention to my own actions and ability to impact others 🤷🏻‍♂️

And guess what won't be metamorphosing? Bitcoin.
Yes, any of the things you mentioned may happen. Many seem on track to happen right now.
But if and when they happen, the permissionless new system is still there and still gets stronger day by day - due to its very design and fundamental properties, which at the end of the day boil down to the human agency within all of us.
If you're "working your arse towards it", then don't sell yourself short my friend. You are a part of it.
If you're "not optimistic" and fearful of the system of oppression, then you're a part of that too.
Not pointing fingers - I too am imperfectly making the messy transition, as we all are. There is much work still to be done.

Perhaps - but I see it as an “unknowable” because we needed the paper money layer above gold to coordinate capital at scale faster than gold could settle, and the dishonest paper money layer would always come to dominate an honest one, because when someone can control the ledger to their own benefit at the detriment of everyone else, they inevitably do.

Indefinitely is a (very very) long time, and fiat is structurally unstable.
The debt / money supply must expand in order to service existing debt. This means that top-down apparatuses of control must strengthen to keep as many of 8B people locked in the system as possible.
Meanwhile bitcoin is the permissionless exit door that is growing more and more truthful, hopeful, and abundant as time goes on.
Yes, on-ramps will be controlled, information will be manipulated, etc. , but the cost of doing so universally is prohibitively high. Especially as more and more people like you and me allocate their time and energy to the emergent system of abundance.

When you take into account the aggregate shape of human nature, I’d say so. Most people won’t go from zero straight to self custody. They’ll go through fiat products first.
This is also why I find the two-layered thinking frame helpful. (the purist’s lens and the practical lens) Fiat and bitcoin will coexist in messy ways that are unsatisfying to the purist for quite some time - AND they cannot coexist indefinitely as a steady state.

Debt/credit ≠ credit-based money.
Debt in bitcoin may be used to fund some projects in some cases. Just like gold could be lent and repaid back in the day. It’d be done based on trust, reputation, and risk tolerance. But it’s far harder to repay in real terms than fiat so its role shrinks relative to now.
Today’s phenomenon of all the debt BEING the money we use? That’s served its purpose (i.e., accelerating large scale capital coordination) and is on its way out.

I tend to separate the two: 1) how bitcoin can be used by any person (i.e., however they want), and 2) the structural battle that will necessarily happen between debt-based fiat and energy/equity-based bitcoin, due to their very properties.
The debt must expand, and that means it must attack bitcoin down the line due to the fundamental incompatibility that Jeff talks about.
Along the way, bitcoin can be used by anyone however they want (agreed with Jack). It truly does not matter what Satoshi intended. But it’s also true that there will come a time when those using it to mine fiat or in a way that serves the centralized fiat mechanisms (like Jack or Saylor) will be forced to choose between the freedom protocol taking over and the debt tokens going to zero.
Some of us have chosen to align with the inevitable and build in the new world, while others are building the bridge that must eventually burn but helps people get across in the meantime. Both are necessary.

Confession: I’ve been spending time away from the bitcoin world in the fiat world.
It’s not what I feel fully aligned with, but it’s necessary so that I can go from strength to strength, rather than moving into bitcoin from a position of weakness.

As someone with close ties to China, I directionally agree that humanity yearns for freedom in the long run - but bear in mind that Chinese people being only recently removed from the Century of Humiliation and now living under the “rising power” narrative are therefore likely to tolerate the control system for longer (as long as it holds).

Because those models likely rely on a centralized authority, which definitionally suppresses the free market and is therefore likely to be outcompeted by the free market in the long run.
Sure, I could see a few small pockets of profit sharing, co-op, or full socialism on the bitcoin standard consisting of those who voluntarily choose those models.
But the desire to contribute and create value is a key component of the human condition. Most humans want to create a better future for their offspring than the present. So I’d expect the global free market to dominate, while other models survive as small boats lifted by the rising tide of the global free market on sound money.

By narrative bridge, I mean Saylor's media work is exposing people to Bitcoin for the first time (alongside his work building products for the financial markets).
That leads them into the ecosystem and to learn about self-custody from those who are championing it.
Yes, there may be some shitcoinery and stockcoinery mixed in. Perhaps Saylor now faces different vested interests compared to before.
But it doesn't matter, because you and I and many others can speak the truth and share with others freely.
And over a long enough period of time, the honest protocol (and its social layer) wins.

No one will be 100% perfectly aligned with the new base layer from the very start during a humanity-wide phase change like this.
We are all going through our own journeys allocating our time and energy from fiat to bitcoin 1% at a time.
Both Saylor and Natalie are building bridges to help others within the narrative market.
And Saylor has taken on a first-mover position within capital markets as well.
Both are contributing more than they are harming, as they are very early and bringing awareness of bitcoin to the masses.
At some point during the transition, both will face the decision to remain in the "fiat asset" camp or move to the "protocol base layer" camp.
The decision may well be forced by ever-tightening conditions in the fiat world, combined with ever-increasing awareness of the bitcoin ecosystem's infinite possibility space.
And the responsibility of taking action to bring about that awareness lies with those of us who have already made it there.

My read of Jeff’s “don’t measure bitcoin in the piece of paper” is: lots of people stop there in their understanding of bitcoin and all they see is NGU.
That typically leads to thinking it’s ok to hold ETFs, playing leveraged games, and planning to one day sell back to USD.
After you’ve understood that bitcoin is the new base layer and you choose which system you contribute your time and energy to, then it doesn’t hurt to make note of the USD price from time to time, because you won’t be going back and you’re just observing the natural disorder that must occur during a phase change like this.
