Today, we're going to learn about one of my favorite obscure tools.

This is a hookaroon.
It's used for moving firewood. It allows me to stick a piece of wood and pick it up off the ground without bending over. It's great for dragging logs or branches. I've also found it to be quite useful for demo work like stripping out drywall and pulling up subflooring.

Thinning the population and training the dogs mostly.
We used to always skin them out and they would keep the pelts to sell at the end of season, but anymore they're not worth enough to justify the time skinning.
We tossed them in the back of their truck and I never asked what they're doing with them this year.
My brother kept a hide from a coon he trapped in that same timber last year and he's working on some moccasins/ boot covers but I don't think he's finished them.

Well, there is a bit of a feeling of sadness for taking the life of a beautiful animal. But it is outweighed by a feeling of pride and gratitude.
Pride in my prowess and skill in moving quietly and shooting accurately, in testing myself against a creature that has senses much keener than my own. Pride that I can secure meat for myself and my family. Gratitude that I have the ability and means to hunt, and land on which to do so. And gratitude that the deer was created for the purpose of providing sustenance for man.

I see some low-chroma grey colors on the ped faces, so it's holding water at least a few months of the year.
You've got clay. Just need some compaction to seal it up. If you have the equipment to do so, push some of the clay from the bottom up along the sides to form a clay berm. A sheepsfoot roller is best, but driving wheeled or even tracked equipment over it is better than nothing.
If you don't want to go the equipment route, pen some hogs or ducks in there for a few months.

It seems your hole has been dug for a while, long enough for grass to grow, but I can't really see evidence that it's retained water yet.
I see a very well-defined horizon break where the soil layers change.
When you get a chance, post a closer picture of the soil profile and tag me. Can't really determine clay content from an image, but I might be able to notice something that may help.

Today was weaning day.

Called the cows up to the corral, sorted off the calves, dewormed, banded the bulls.
A couple of the heifers will stay on the farm for breeding. About 5 of the steers will be kept for butchering, and the rest will go to the sale barn in about 4 weeks to make the farm some fiat for the year.

Here is my tractor.

It's a 1980 Ford 4610. My great grandpa bought it new. He died before I was born and the tractor passed to my grandpa. He used it while I was growing up. He taught me to drive it about age 13 to 14.
Then Grandpa upgraded to a newer tractor with a cab and the old Ford was sold to my dad sometime during my high school years. I drove it to school once for FFA week and took a few of the girls in my class for rides around the parking lot.
I was borrowing the tractor when I was starting up my own farm and it caught fire in my shop, and burned up the wiring, battery, instrument panel, and steering column. Dad got the insurance payout and bought a different tractor.
I paid the salvage cost to keep the old tractor and we spent the following winter totally rebuilding it, reworked the engine, gaskets, injectors etc. Had the alternator, fuel pump, radiator, clutch, and starter all rebuilt. New tires, new paint job, new wiring harness and instrument panel, and turned some new shifter knobs on the lathe. Now it's ready for about three more generations to enjoy.

The flavors have blended together more uniformly during the cellaring time. Other than the Oriental leaf in the foreground, I no longer detect the individual blending components, the Latakia and Virginia notes having become a pleasant underlying earthiness beneath the Oriental.

This is the first one I've had, and I'm quite impressed with it.
Some people get picky about blade steel and smooth bearings, but I've been carrying fixed blades and slip joints and haven't had a new modern folder for about 15 years, so it's way smoother and better quality than the flipper knife I had back then.
The Elementum model is quite popular and has linerlock and button lock versions and an impressive number of handle options.

I tend to change it up every few months, then it remains consistent until the next time I change something.
The exception to that would be Sundays going to church, or some other occasions requiring nicer dress. Then I might carry less items or swap out for a smaller, classier knife.

I would guess that the plastic taste comes from the bag more than the filter. Wash and rinse the bag multiple times and see if that helps.

This was an interesting soil profile.

It's in a yard on an upland summit. The topsoil (Ap horizon) was hauled in at some point in the past. Below that was a layer of creek gravel probably spread for an old parking area.
The original topsoil is below that, which makes it a buried A horizon (Ab). Next is a silty, light colored layer (E horizon), which indicates this area was forested in the past. Underneath is silty clay. These layers were all deposited by wind.
At the bottom of the pit, is a layer of sandy clay that was formed from sanstone.

One generation passed away. Next generation kept farming the land, but had their own house down the road. So this house was neglected. Second generation passed. Third generation is still running cattle on the land, but have their own house down the road, so now there are two empty houses and third generation has hired us to do clean up.
