Took care of the bee hive yesterday. It was probably not the best day to go outside in a bee suit. After I got out all the frames and took off the beef suit, my shirt 100% drenched in sweat. I switched back to my own car work when I finally got a garage again. I hate all the scanning/tracking of VINs at shops.
Last year I did all the oil in the Tacoma. 4x4s are beasts. Nearly 5 liters in the back pumpkin alone! and the front drain plug was impossible to get off since it used an Allen-key/hex bold (needed PB Penetrating oil, a heat gun and a breaker bar). I immediately replaced that plug with the Lexus version which used a regular damn socket bolt!
The transfer case also uses their weird oil OEM, and even if you take it to a Toyota/Lexus dealership they'll often just stick regular 75W-90 in. The OEM stuff is like $80/liter too, but Red Line makes a MT-LV 70W/75W GL-4 that matches it.
I like putting in the effort and research to make sure I'm doing it right.

There are a lot of fields where it makes thing worse. There are some fields where it's unavoidable. I think the LLMs make shit code when people try to generate 10k+ lines at a time with spec driven development. But if it's used on small segments here and there, it can get you off the ground (but you still need to adjust 1/3 of it if you care about code quality).
Unfortunately, it's unavoidable in my field if you don't want to fall really behind. But it's also overused and I think the field will shift over to non-LLM coders within 6 years, getting paid way over market if they know how to code, to tackle and reverse the massive amount of slop.
TL;DR the religious angle would work for me with COVID-death-jabs, but not so much in the LLM era because it's more-than-marginally useful.

I had a client I was contracting for who was using it and it's super over-complicated to do anything remotely advanced. I guess it's good at the very basics.
But I've been running wireguard manually for years and it's so easy to configure that tailscale is just a hellish nightmare for me. Even basic things like port forwarding from a public IP, I couldn't really figure out how to do, where with just plain wireguard it's like 2~3 iptables rules.

oh I had access to a CRT oscilloscope in our embedded systems lab in grad school. We had some LCD ones too, but the analogue ones just felt so much better. You could adjust your sample rate just right and get a perfect straight line from the aliasing from a sine wave generator.
I think TechMoan did a video on people in the demo-scene who get them to make all kinda of insane pictures from frequency input.

I dunno. What was the resolution of that first CRT? Did it just display lines? I've played on one of the original Asteroids units at a museum. CRT with analog circuits and those beautiful, crisp, sharp and haunting white lines .. and that came after decades of work; well past the radio era.

As much as she is an idiot, the clip posted everywhere is so out of context when you listen to the entire argument. The Trump lawyer specifically makes the legal case that allegiance isn't voluntary, but is the product of the rules to which you are subject to. It's a very specific legal definition of allegiance, as well as of domicile.

Back in the 2000s there was a video where you could see the green-screen behind his nose. It got called out on either Daily Show or Colbert back then but he denied it and said it was a camera or editing artifact.

There's a documentary I can't find on any torrent site. I decided to just buy it to support the creator. It's published on mymoviesplus.com though, and it requires DRM to play. He gets some things pretty wrong, like Copilot can have access to Anthropic (Claude) models too depending on what you or your company pays for and enables. He tends to confuse the company/model names a lot.
As far as Sora goes, I'm not surprised OpenAI was losing money. I know 5 seconds of video using hunyuanvideo1.5_720p_fp16 can take 8~10 hours on an AMD R9700. I've heard this is significantly faster on consumer nVidia cards, but they also eat a lot more power. (Curious how long it takes on a 5090).
I've heard xAI/Grok charges $60/month for making up to 50x 5sec clips per day, and it only takes 1~2 min. I imagine they're probably hemorrhaging money there as well.

What's good about removing btrfs, xfs and zfs support? What's good about removing classic apple support? (I use to run Gentoo on a beige PPC years ago). Hasn't Grub had LUKS and RAID1 support forever?
Why is removing splash images a good idea? How many splat image decoding exploits have there been?
I haven't needed a separate /boot for nearly 10 years now, but with these changes, I would need to add one if I was still using Grub.

There was a talk at the bee keeping meetup last year where a guy talked about getting swarms out of peoples' houses. Several exterminators have his phone number.
Some people mistakenly believe he'd pay them for the bees. He's gotta inform them it's $500, plus he's going to have to cut up your walls, you're going to have bees in your home you need to let out or kill, and you'll need to redo the drywall (or hire someone to do it).
It's pretty intense to get bees out of a home. I wouldn't do it for anyone. He uses a shop vac, and has to pull out combs and attach them to frames with wire. A regular exterminator may not be able to kill the queen and spare queen-cells, but people who do this regularly will be sure to get everything.
It's a pretty specific skill though. Most bee keepers wouldn't try to capture bees unless they're in a swarm outside.

I'm not surprised with systemd considering its connections to Redhat/IBM and Pottering being the kind of person he is.
There should be more push back from Linux distros themselves, especially the non-commercial ones that are super vocal. There seems to be a forum thread for NixOS but nothing official.

The core also tends not to be packaged managed, but everything in / and /usr as part of the core/base, with other packages places in /usr/local.
I ran OpenBSD as my e-mail server for a while. I still use OpenSMTPD, but have since migrated it into an Alpine container

The case studies section seems decent, but I do see the references to ideological books as well ... 70 pages though .. I doubt most people get through a quarter of this.

I don't think OSI would approve GPLv3 as open source if it were a new license today. Meanwhile they are fine with labeling local LLMs as open, even though they're literally akin to closed binaries without the training data or any means to reproduce their production.

I mean .. if you're running Mastodon. Pleroma can run on reasonably sized servers. $240/yr also isn't very much at all for hosted services.
