We have a family friend, a woman into her 30's now. Fairly bright. Did an actual STEM degree years ago. Fun to have around at gatherings.
But that's it. Best way to describe it is she has a smart mouth. And always wanting to one-up on the come backs.
That can be entertaining in small doses but it would become incredibly wearing around that all the time. And it's all the time with her and just becomes unpleasant.

Only real applications I've seen are optimization problems. A practical problem is translated into a quantum system *waves hands*. The superposition allows it to effectively try every possibility at once, exhaustive enumeration effectively, and it settles into a minimum energy/cost state that represents the best final solution.
That's hand wavy because there are details. But it has been used for routing optimization in practice.

You need a solid linear algebra background for this stuff. This textbook does a review but assumes you've already had it covered. There's no getting around it. There's a *lot* of math. And you have to have a physicist's or engineer's ability to connect the math to the physical world it's describing in an intuitive way. And that comes with years of education and work in the field.
Not trying to put you off. But it's a serious investment if you really want to understand the material.

I understand the basics. The thing with this entangled communication is that you still need a classical side channel - radio, laser, carrier pigeon if you like - to carry side information. This limits the speed to still speed of light. No faster than light laws are being broken here. And it's an integral part of the protocol. But you do get unbreakable encryption. And we don't even understand how the human mind works yet. We have no real understanding of consciousness or sentience.
We just copied an interesting structure that's found in the brain, the way neurons network with each other in the brain, stuck on a simple model of how they might interact and found at first interesting (letter recognition) and more and more surprising and possibly useful results.
But to call it thinking as an AI is a *huge* stretch - that sells!
This structure of networked neurons looks like it can power lower animals and their ability to move in the world, adapt to circumstances, find food, escape predators.
But we're a long way from human cognition as far as I can see.
We don't even know if it's this network structure is what leads to human level cognition. That could be a completely separate process we don't know about that's built *on top* of the existing network and took time to evolve.
Perhaps Pensrose's and others' idea of quantum mechanics being fundamentally involved in consciousness. We are just starting to understand quantum computing so maybe that will be the way forward.
Regardless, it still is an exciting field. Hype aside.

Late 70's in a small town surrounded by farmland and an hour to the nearest city. About a thousand White students and one civilized black. The teachers were smart and if you showed any spark they were happy to work with you. We had a (very) small math club where we taught ourselves more advanced algebra and calculus starting in grade 10. Two teachers supplied textbooks and would assist with questions and problems. One thing that made a difference is how students were streamed into lower, middle and advanced levels of courses starting in grade 10. We went to grade 13 back then.

There's always been a reserve currency in some form. Going back a few thousand years. Before the US it was Britain. Spain, Portugal, Italy, Holland, etc. all had their turn. Rome and other empires had theirs.
