# Bitcoin Principles
## A Commitment to Sound Money
We came to Bitcoin by different roads, but we arrived at the same truth.
Some fled broken money. Some distrusted institutions. Some sought permissionless trade. Others stumbled through the noise of cryptocurrency speculation into the clarity of the Bitcoin protocol.
But we all found the same thing:
A system built not by the dictate of the chosen few, but on rules anyone can verify and validate. A money not created at another's expense. A network no authority can command. A ledger that refuses censorship.
Behind it lies a simple, sacred proposition: Honest money changes how people live.
When money cannot be debased, saving becomes meaningful. When saving becomes meaningful, the future matters. We choose to think beyond the next quarter, the next election, the next cycle—beyond our own lifetimes.
We choose to build things meant to last. We choose to preserve rather than consume. We consider what we leave to our children, and what they will leave to theirs.
The decisions we make today will echo for centuries. Therefore, we hold these Principles.
## 1. Bitcoin is money.
Bitcoin is not a commodity awaiting conversion into money, nor a platform in search of a use. It is money: a direct medium of exchange and store of value, capable of serving as its own unit of account. We say plainly what it is because clarity of purpose is the first defense against its attempted transformation into something else. The base layer exists to serve Bitcoin's monetary function. We reject treating scarce block space as a general-purpose data storage service.
## 2. Twenty-One Million
Absolute scarcity is inviolable. Bitcoin's fixed issuance schedule is essential to its character as sound money. Its fixed supply limit of 21 million BTC shall never be increased. No government, corporation, developer, miner, emergency, war, recession, political movement, loss of coins, concern over future miner revenue, or other unforeseen circumstance justifies deliberate monetary debasement. Nor does any bug, exploit, or implementation error that violates the limit legitimize the resulting inflation; such a violation is an error to be corrected, not a change to Bitcoin's monetary policy.
Twenty-one million. Not one Satoshi more.
## 3. Sovereignty requires responsibility
Bitcoin gives individuals the ability to hold and transact with money without requiring a trusted custodian. That sovereignty carries responsibility. We encourage Bitcoiners to understand the tools upon which their security depends, independently generate and protect their keys, verify rather than trust, and reduce unnecessary dependence upon proprietary hardware, software, and third parties. Convenience should not recreate the trusted intermediaries Bitcoin was designed to make unnecessary.
We encourage the use of open-source software, commodity hardware, independently generated entropy, and tools that can be inspected, reproduced, repaired, or replaced. Not your keys, not your coins. Not your entropy, not your keys.
## 4. Pursue decentralization
We seek a Bitcoin in which individuals can hold, transact, verify, and participate without requiring permission from or dependence upon any person, company, development team, software implementation, miner, or institution. Changes affecting Bitcoin's protocol, network policy, or practical requirements for participation should be evaluated for their effect on decentralization. We consider the accessibility of independent node operation, the cost of verification, concentration of mining and development, and dependence upon particular software or infrastructure.
We welcome diversity in implementations, mining, infrastructure, and development because we believe it strengthens resilience of the network. Decentralization is not a condition we claim to have achieved, but a direction we commit to pursue.
## 5. Bitcoin's immutable purpose
Bitcoin is not conservative out of stagnation, but by design. The base layer exists to preserve Bitcoin exclusively as sound, peer-to-peer electronic cash. We reject using the protocol as a platform for perpetual experimentation, feature development, or novel use cases that compromise its monetary purpose as defined in Principle 1. Its purpose must remain fixed, even when its implementation must change. Bitcoin’s rules may be strengthened, upgraded, or temporarily restricted when necessary to defend its monetary function, security, decentralization, or accessibility. But as Bitcoin matures, the threshold for fundamental change should rise. Change must serve Bitcoin’s purpose, never redefine it.
Those proposing changes bear the burden of demonstrating, openly and to skeptics, that they are necessary to preserve Bitcoin’s monetary properties—not merely useful, desirable, profitable, or technically possible.
## 6. We think in generations
Bitcoin must not serve only us. We are temporary custodians of a monetary system intended to endure long after we are gone. We judge changes not only by what they accomplish in our lifetimes, but by the precedents, dependencies, and burdens they leave future generations. Convenience in the present must not come at the expense of future sovereignty. We seek to preserve a money our children and grandchildren can hold, transact with, and independently verify under the same fundamental Principles we inherited.
In matters of fundamental principle, the Bitcoin of today must be the Bitcoin of tomorrow. We do not optimize Bitcoin for the next cycle. We preserve it for the next century.
## 7. Disagreement without division
Bitcoin depends not only upon code, but upon the voluntary agreement of people who independently enforce the same rules. That agreement can be destroyed without any failure of the protocol. Rivalry can replace common purpose, suspicion replace good faith, anger harden into contempt, and disagreement into faction. A community consumed by hostility, pride, ambition, greed, and division will eventually find reasons to fracture. Changes that threaten consensus therefore bear an extraordinary burden of necessity, and disagreements demand patience, humility, self-control, and a willingness to be corrected.
We should remember what this hard fork has cost: uncertainty, division, stress, and lost trust. These Principles cannot compel unity. They are a warning that Bitcoin may withstand attacks from without while being divided by those entrusted with its defense.
## Our Commitment
We, the undersigned, affirm these Principles as an expression of what we believe Bitcoin is and what must be preserved. We commit ourselves to uphold them, to judge future changes against them, and to preserve these Principles for those who come after us.
We sign not to bind others, but to state plainly where we stand.

I've been lurking (and discussing) in Luke's Bitcoin Knots discord as we discuss the hardfork strategy. I think this point is really important to get clear, because a lot of plebs on our side still have a terrible misconception about it.
Replay "attacks" are actually not a bug, they're a feature for people who are unsure which chain is the real Bitcoin Timechain, either because they haven't had time to weigh the arguments (or even hear them), or because they've been duped. It carries much of their economic activity over to the correct chain, it allows you to use Bitcoin to some extent even if you get tricked into accepting invalid blocks for a while. You can switch to the correct consensus rules and pick up where you left off with much or all of your post-split history intact.
The BLAKE2b hardfork is adding an opt-in to transactions that lets you choose to split your coins (the act of transacting on the BLAKE2b chain with the new opt-in sighash in the transaction itself permanently splits the coins). It is opt-in by design.
If you want to use a chain without any chance of replay, it is your responsibility to ensure that. We are not going to sacrifice the property of people who have been duped by invalid blocks for the sake of a minor convenience for you.
To sum up this whole concept in Luke-speak, which is delightfully simple and gets to the very essence of this,
> Bitcoin isn't going to make Bitcoin transactions invalid to protect scamcoiners.
Further hammering this home, Luke added:
> Keep in mind that would block Lightning channels from closing
So stop calling replay an "attack." Permitting it preserves Bitcoin, and preserves users' sats. Bitcoin is Bitcoin. It is not an airdrop. The onus to split from Bitcoin is on Scamcoin.

Recently I've been drafting a rigorous examination of property rights as regards the Blockian Proviso, expanding on the implications of the logical proof presented by Lukasz Dominiak, and at the end I briefly consider implications for Bitcoin and mempool sovereignty. The final thoughts basically amount to a proof that noderunners have no duty to let spam in. Will publish sometime in the coming days (nostr native of course)!

I simply cannot be forestalled from action for long. I wholly agree with you here. As I do not consider modesty a virtue, but rather things be examined and understood **exactly** as they are, I see nothing wrong with highlighting your standout assertions.
In fact it plays to one of the most critical implications of the very point that has been made. If respect is a ready made good in itself to be afforded to everyone, then self-respect is not to be held in suspicion or reproach, but rather cherished and readily called upon!
