It's a random thing, but I'm feeling really happy about having my small business give an annual donation to a couple of open source projects it depends on.
Huge shout out and thanks to all these for being so useful and solid that I *can* depend on them:
- OBS Studio (@npub19za…damh), used basically daily to get local videos of sessions for supervision and study
- LibreOffice (@npub1tgg…qwzh), used weekly or a few times a month
- Linux Mint (@npub1l38…ky3k) which is my backup machine's OS, someday to become my main one, hopefully.

Man, the older I get, the more things are too loud for me. I’ve no idea if this is because I’m one of the few people of my generation that had my hearing protected when I was young, if it’s because I’m noise sensitive because of some sort of neurodivergence, or both.
Currently at Grease at the Village Theatre and really really happy for my loop earplugs on hand.

I stopped buying books from them the moment they unilaterally changed the deal from “you own the book and can download it” to “books as a service”.

Women are 73% more likely to be severely injured in a car crash, and 17% more likely to die than men. All because car companies have been resisting testing for women since forever. I’m not surprised on several levels. As I’ve gotten older and have larger breasts, seatbelts basically are impossible to put at the right spot on me anymore. And that’s just one example.
Apparently there’s a current She Drives act in the senate that’s aimed at fixing this, which could use support.

Not sure if it’s helpful for this situation, but when I used to be in choirs, we were routinely directed to shift our s sounds in words more towards shorter z sounds. I’ve no idea if this works for voiceover though!

Does anyone here do #SeatWeaving? I've got 6 old Ikea chairs like these, and the Danish paper cord on them is starting to fray. I LOVE them and they are discontinued. Trying to figure out if it's folly for a beginner to attempt to cut off and reweave. The curve looks daunting and I'm not sure which way to start warping (front to back versus left to right).

This book is so clear that US history excludes our neighbors. For example, I was surprised to learn Jamestown was in 1609 and Quebec was in 1610! And that Norse explorers connected and traded with first nations back in the tenth century. By the late 1400, glass beads and wrought iron were arriving either by trade with European fishing boats or shipwrecks, and US nations were tipping arrows with said iron.

Also, every year until 1800, London had more deaths than births, and only grew because people immigrated. [WOAH]
Other interesting facts: "Iroquois" (actually the Haudenosaunee) is a name given by enemies and means something like "snake". They apparently rebuked the Dutch, telling them they couldn't negotiate only with the men for land, because the women more properly owned it as the farmers and town builders.

Currently reading "Native Nations: A Millennium in North America", by Kathleen DuVal. This is a *fascinating* book! Highly recommended. It centers the first nations of the US in history, setting them against a sweeping history including the rest of the world. So we learn at one point that neither Natives nor Europeans understood germ theory in 1585 (and wouldn't really until 3 centuries later), but that China was already practicing inoculation.

Anyone have #SanFrancisco food suggestions for a person downtown (Post street) for the next few days? I love basically all types and styles of food -- happy for anything from a food truck recommendation to a fancier sit down place.
Main thing is it needs to either be walkable from this area or no more than a ~20 min taxi ride.

White women went to court to stop enslaved people from being seized to pay husbands debts, intervened so husbands did not control them, bought and sold to one another via letter, worked with slave traders, and in one case ran auctions of enslaved people at her own home. Stephanie E. Jones-Rogers details with devastating precision — from childhood through adulthood, how white women were involved. Highly recommend as a read, particularly if you’re a white US woman.

One of the things this made clearer to me, though, is why post-civil war, women in particular seemed so interested in rewriting pre-war history. Turns out, southern women of the era gained power through their families gifting them people and land — we know this because it was in legal documents that they were for the womens’ “separate and exclusive” use. We also have interviews of previously enslaved people who made it clear that white women had owned them.

Ok, I gave up on The Ministry of Time, but did finish “They Were Her Property,” a fantastic if hard book to read. I’ve always loved the genre of “if we look at history looking for women, turns out we find them everywhere, doing significant things!” This book is that, except the significant thing is, “enslaving people in early America”. 😬🤔 Kinda equal parts “oh wow, they were all up in that business,” and … uh, they were ALL UP in a very nasty “business”.

Even more amazing, they found almonds and walnuts (zoom in to the right side of the table) that were preserved by Vesuvius’ pyroclastic flow.

#WashingtonState ferries are so charming. The one I’m on has three tables with jigsaw puzzles on them, next to the giant windows looking out over the water. They have seltzer water, kombucha, and local beer for sale. The views are amazing. And while I’m sure there are exceptions, all of the workers I’ve interacted with have been efficient and kind.

Yeah, I didn't realize that "putting your palms on the ground was actually weird. I just figured the people around me were INflexible! 🤣 (Also I was around people doing ballet and yoga, who I think are also mostly hyperflexible.)
I can't quite do that anymore (hamstrings too tight), but used to be able to with no issue.
Yikes on the left knee joint. Wowsa. ❤️
I've been spotty on weight training, but you're right, it REALLY helps with everything. Gotta get back into it!

I think I’m in a similar boat — I was shocked when a doctor told me I was hyper-flexible, and then I looked at a lot of the E-D symptoms. They don’t all fit, but I definitely have that “bruising a lot” and clumsy thing (my legs rarely are completely bruise-free). And apparently some of my perpetual aches are related to that too - the doctor said he tended to see a lot of us in our 40s showing up and complaining of joint pain.

In June, I finally put pride bunting on my balcony - a mix of pride flags.
Today I got the sweetest appreciation from an anonymous queer neighbor, who left a note on my door. It was hours ago I saw it, and I’m still glowing. I literally put the note on my fridge next to the family photos. 🏳️‍🌈
Visibility and support are so important right now. Even in areas we think are very open.
Also: Tape nice notes to your neighbor’s doors. It makes the whole place feel friendlier!

I do, though use one not based in the US. Especially as I’m going into perimenopause, it’s helpful to see what’s changing.
Also in the US basically every doctor asks uterus-havers what the start date of their last period was, which was annoying when I wasn’t tracking.

I couldn't put it down, but the cozy list described it as basically "woman gets haunted by her cranky grandmother," and I think that's ... REALLY not the right description of what happens here. I mean, yes, that happens. And a bunch of other less-cozy stuff too.

Black Water Sister: Got it because it was on a "cozy fantasy" list. I loved it.
Caveat: NOT actually "cozy". It includes offscreen sexual assault as a backdrop, one attempt onscreen, and several very physical fights.
I loved it being set in Malaysia, with references to Hokkien, Malay, and Cantonese languages, as well as delightful food descriptions.
The main character is queer, closeted due to family reasons. But I think it still counts as a #QueerBooksForPride

I’m weaving on an airplane, which I’ve seen done by Lady Elweys, but involved an awkward angle to use the neighboring seat’s tray for a backstrap. This is the Inklette and is one of the few spots it excels. It could use a clamp to anchor it to the tray though. #TabletWeaving

Pondering divesting more from Google for my biz, but not sure where to go.
I currently use:
- Meet
- Voice
- Gmail
- Drive
- Forms
I get all of the above for my single user for about $30/month.
The kicker is I need something with a BAA and has done the work to declare themselves HIPAA complaint.
Are there decent replacements at my price point? I could shift Meet to Sessions Health for $10 a month if the rest could be found at $20.

Trying a NYT cooking recipe for rib roast where it’s rubbed with flour, salt, and pepper and then put in a 500 degree oven for 30 minutes, turned off, and then left unopened for ~2 hours. I hope this works, it feels very … imprecise? #cooking

My compost pile has moved up to “warm”, though is not showing as “active” or “hot” yet. I’ll see what it’s like after I empty the entire fridge’s worth of food that went without power for nearly five days. Maybe that’ll push it up to hot? The roads in Brasstown, NC glitter.
There’s a grayish rock that sparkles that’s everywhere. And so the paths and sometimes parking lots look like someone glitterbombed them with silver.
It’s absolutely delightful.

Given I saw rumbling in the fediverse about tenforward.social potentially being defederated by multiple other servers, I wondered if I had any people I follow who are there. The only way I could come up with to check was to download my follows and then search that file for the string.

I confess this made my eyes roll tho: “The mid-40s ageing spike was unexpected and initially assumed to be a result of perimenopausal changes in women skewing results for the whole group. But the data revealed similar shifts were happening in men in their mid-40s, too.”
