I just DNF'd Dream Hotel. It's wonderfully written and engaging and I'm sure it ends in some lovely hope inspiring way, but the first couple of chapters described a dystopia too easily extrapolated from where we are today.
I need books that will let my insomnia lessen, not worsen.

Been going through the @npub1q0x…ffgx back catalog over the past few months. Man, there are some real gems in there, going back to 2008...
Ostensibly because I have pretty bad restless legs, and the tone is often perfectly engaging to distract from the pain until I can doze off (the host has commented on feedback to this effect).
Many are compelling enough that I go back and listen again when I wake in the morning.
Don't (ahem...) sleep on this archive. It's a cultural treasure.

Putin's agenda, as is currently being carried out by the usurper, is to cause civil unrest, suspend elections, and permanently install their proxy in the white house.

Pretty much the only thing I miss twitter is SFF book twitter. I followed a bunch of queer and fem authors, I read SO MANY amazing books by brilliant new voices.
I expect there's something like that on BS but I'm not doing centralized socials maybe ever again.
Bookstodon is pretty good, but it's not quite the same.
A bunch of authors joined wandering.shop early days but most left for BS

So apparently I can articulate melodies and adornments on the slide guitar now, instead of just whatever I can reach with the slide.
After 35 years or so I'm used to progress coming in long slow climbs and wide plateaus. It's a nice surprise to stumble my way to a new horizon.

I've had a beginner sailboat up on craigslist for a while, and I just got my first scam attempt: "I'll send you a cashier's check and someone will come pick up the boat for you."
There are other obvious scam indicators, so I'm having fun wasting their time, asking "how long you been sailing? what kind of waters you plan on sailing? What boats have you sailed before?"
I'll probably ghost when I'm done eating breakfast tho.

That's such a good idea.
I knew a kid who'd glue bits of ping pong balls under his nails. I was never dedicated enough to try it (plus as a street musician I was thoroughly on team metal, for VOLUME), but acrylic,I could give that a go.

As a machine, my Sunfish is a skateboard on the water: holding a rope and a stick, I am the interface between the elements and the vessel.
My Montgomery 17, sturdy and seaworthy, small though she may be, is a rope-and-pully powered mecha for the sea.
Each, in it's own way, at it's own scale, is poetry in motion.

How does one even do inktober? I draw and paint some things, but they're so personal, it feels so much more vulnerable to share online than, say, a recording.
A drawing happens once (for me), a recording is just one performance of a piece I may sing differently next time.

Hello! I write folk music. Someone said I sound a bit like Connie Connor; I'm sort of going more for Bill Staines, but I'll take it. And some other kinds of stuff, when inspired. I have some on Bandcamp, and more coming out early 2025.
Most of what I've put out is very lo-fi, generally just me and a guitar.
Maybe I'll see you out on the road some day.

So where are we at with OSS phones these days?
Pinephone seems... weak? Potato camera, no 5G. But otherwise, actually affordable.
Purism seems relatively current, but Pixel premium prices for somewhat underspec'd.
Am I missing something? Is there another one out there to look at?

Trying to pick a waterproof black fountain pen ink. There are so many, so similar...
Right now I'm thinking about Noodler's American Eel or Heart of Darkness.
I like Platinum Carbon Black, but it's a little spendy, and it's recommended to dedicate a pen to it.

I'm trying to identify a book I read years ago, called THE FAMILY.
I don't remember who it was by, but I'm pretty sure it was a woman, and from the prose I'd think it was written between 1940 and 1960.
The book follows generations of an Iowa family as they go from rural IA to the quad cities, to spread out...
There's no real plot per se, but it stuck with me. Kind of an American Midwest THE GOOD EARTH
