I'm simmering mad that some combination of Samsung and Google decided to shove out an update to Dad's phone which replaced the power-on flow with an almost inescapable account creation/activation funnel for Samsung AI (?) and, simultaneously, remapped the physical side button from power-off to Google Gemini.
Unasked, unprompted, and unwanted, his phone suddenly became useless and hostile to him.
We worked through it together but there's no way of actually turning it *off*, only snoozing it.

I'm seeing people compare LLM generated code to "a hacky shell or Python script", as in a rough throwaway tool not meant to be built atop or understood.
Gently, I'll argue that this is misunderstanding the value of shell scripts in particular & rapid prototyping in general. The value and the point of shell scripts is to set down on disk the smallest kernel of a working idea specifically so it *can* be understood clearly, then iteratively expanded & replaced to cover surrounding special cases.

I love reading through a codebase liberally annotated with comments noting ideas and techniques cribbed from blog posts, textbooks, research papers, personal correspondence.
I feel like a lot of that ends up in pull requests instead of codebase comments now. That's not necessarily a bad thing, except that pull requests tend to be locked inside walled gardens while git repos move the history durably and fluidly.
Anyhow. Just something I really enjoy. Thanks to those who do that. Love it. ❤️

You know that 4GB AI model that Google Chrome silently installs on your machine?
Keep in mind that the Chrome team decided to do that because *they thought it was a good idea*. If user outrage is sufficient to cause that decision to be rolled back, they'll still push the same AI features, only hosted remotely instead of locally.
If you're going to trust software from a development team somewhere, you are making a decision to trust their processes and to accept their pressures.

@nprofile…u8z9 the really simple ones don't, but high-power LiIon batteries need thermal protection to shut down the driver before LEDs burn out or batteries enter thermal runaway! And LiIon batteries also experience chemical degradation when drawn upon past a certain voltage floor so good flashlight drivers offer low-voltage shutoff protection too. And if you already have a microcontroller doing that monitoring, well, you might as well implement variable brightness...

Of course you can aim higher. It doesn't feel like the glory days of early computerization where a week in the server closet can change the world, but there are still a million ways we can make things work better in the large and in the small.
But you can do a lot of good by doing the basics really well. People will thank you for it, sincerely, because it's more than many folks contribute. You can set a good example, you can hold out a helping hand; you can prove it's not a zero-sum game.

1. When something is slow, you look carefully at the output of a profiler or a query plan & make measured suggestions about what to improve;
2. When something breaks badly, you gently but insistently ask what & why until you truly know, then the next time similar work is needed you bring up how to avoid doing what broke last time; and
3. When someone lacks info, you make them feel good for learning instead of bad for not knowing;
You will do good work.

I have a feeling, not yet filtered into reasonable thoughts & distilled into a proper argument, that the next phase of free software should focus on..:
1. software written by people (as opposed to businesses or their LLM pseudopods),
2. for people (as opposed to "customers" or other businesses),
3. using participatory processes (as opposed to projects like Android that accept no contributions, or have closed bug trackers or mailing lists),
4. emphasizing users learning & changing core code.

Most shadow IT exists due to (perceived) necessity and a (perceived) inability to tap into necessary services through existing org structures. It's usually built with good intentions to solve real problems by people whose job does not include knowing better.
Agentic AI-based services are almost all being built by people whose job *does* include knowing better. They should.

Some friends and I have been exploring alternatives to Discord and Slack since both services are heading in intolerable directions.
We've looked at obvious choices like Matrix and Zulip, less obvious ones like Signal and Delta Chat, and some weird ones like the chat system built into the Fossil version control system.
I hoped Delta Chat would add channels, but no luck. I kind of expected we'd end up defaulting to Matrix.
But IRCv3 (Ergo / Goguma / Irctoday) is in the lead. Surprising.

I use Debian by choice and I am required to care about macOS and Windows for professional reasons, and I am surprised every other day that the least annoying desktop experience of the three is Debian, by a huge margin.
It's not *great*. It's just OK. It's a little bit better than it was ten years ago.
But by just getting a little bit better every once in a while, and by not regressing catastrophically, it has now lapped two multi billion dollar multinational corp offerings.

It's an Emisar DW4K, a D4K (both with SST20-DR 660nm red LEDs), a Sofirn silicone diffuser, an Armytek AWM-01 clamp, a Fenix ALB-10 quick release mount, a Fenix ALD-10 GoPro adapter, and a GoPro bicycle saddle clamp. The batteries last for 6+ hours.

Bleah, it's annoying that the FLACs purchased from 7Digital include the text "... (Explicit)" in both the filenames and the embedded metadata of albums released alongside versions edited for radio.
It would be ever so slightly less annoying if they would tag the radio version instead, perhaps with the text "... (Bowdlerized)" or "... (Radio Edit)" or "... (for delicate infants)"

Dear Toronto driver with the rainbow "this Tesla does not support fascism" sticker on the back: while it's fine that you have the good sense to be embarrassed about your vehicle, apparently you didn't pay attention to Musk's behavior before your purchase, which was more or less identical to it afterward.

@nprofile…cee8 hey, on that topic, have you considered creating an @[email protected] account for posts from yourself in that role, to give your personal account a bit of space separate from those duties? I've seen admins on other instances adopt that model and it seems to work well for them. (It's usually called out which admin is using that account with a short signature in each post, plus a note in the account bio linking to the personal user accounts of the admin users plus the server policy page about it.)

I have Hope hydro brakes on my Brompton and the bite point is definitely adjustable, and for my preference it's pretty short. (And I have a pleasantly even spectrum of force between the pads just touching the rotors and full lock-up, the modulation of braking force is smooth and superb.)

@nprofile…jqvx in several ways - though not all - I would argue that documentation is the _only_ technology, in that it advances the state of the art of what is known, can be constructed, can be built upon, and can be abstracted and generalized.
Without documentation, a new invention is just a device: interesting, perhaps so much so that it sparks inspiration in someone else to understand it, but it goes little further than that until it is documented in a way intended to communicate its key insights.

I have not re-watched Empire in like ten years and this is the best way I could have done it. A live performance of the score would have been more than excellent enough, but that the Toronto Symphony Orchestra is doing it in perfect synchronization with the dialog and sound effects is just tremendous.

The price point is uhhh discouraging; in the last year or so they have drifted a little more towards the fashion rather than the utility side (which isn't to say fashion is bad, it's just not the domain in which Goruck originally found their footing); and they have a military-is-cool kind of angle which does not endear. But the GR1 has a terrific laptop sleeve, the pack is built like a damn tank, the stitching is excellent, materials are top tier.

I wish he was still here. He was a good man, joyful and kind. Made the world better by being in it, brought delight to people who shared their joy. Built way too many Reviung keyboards. LLMs are an interesting way to explore a large corpus of data, in theory, if the processing overhead wasn't simply unacceptable and if the accuracy was better.
However.
You know what actually does feel like magic? I have about 30G of SSD storage dedicated to mirroring a few mailing lists I care about, with another 120G for search indices. 25, 30 years of posts. Today at $JOB someone asked a question. In 5 minutes I had the bug number from 2012; in 6 I had the commit ID for the 2014 fix.

@nprofile…0n93 I got some vague handwaving about it in comp sci classes at Ottawa U and Carleton about a million years ago, but honestly the strongest guidance about avoiding global vars came from a careful examination of the performance costs of dynamic vs lexical scoping in RnRS Scheme. The takeaway was that globals were a convenience but are encumbered with a really quite surprisingly large perf cost. No mention of hygiene or "correctness", but that's the argument & lesson that stuck with me.

This is probably a pretty cold take at this point, but I feel like SELinux is a failed idea. Not in that it doesn't function, because it does; nor in that its functionality isn't valuable, because it is; but in that it has failed to turn that value into a wide improvement in the security of the linux ecosystem.
I think a contributing cause for this is how it feels like a sales pitch: "buy our training course", "buy our consultancy package".
Feels like it was written by IBM. (It was the NSA.)

It's less common knowledge than I would have expected, but sunscreen has a best-before date! It's a good idea to check that each season to make sure you don't need to replace it even if there's still some left.
Fortunately, expired sunscreen just gets less effective, not dangerous. You're still more likely to get food poisoning from the salad you put it on than from the expired sunscreen itself.
