specifically, all the gen 4 games can trade with each other. Diamond, Pearl, Platinum, HeartGold, and SoulSilver. So I traded my shiny pokemon from all those DS games into one main save file! My HeartGold version.
If you have the DS systems with GBA ports, you can transfer GBA mons into the DS games.

I'm surprised you never played it! At times it feels like those were the only kind of games on those systems xD heh. The GBA, DS, and even 3DS games can technically all connect with each other! Transferring upward. You can even transfer your GBA mons all the way up to the Switch games, but if you didnt download Pokemon Bank on 3DS before the eshop shut down I dont rwally know how you'd do it that far 🤔
I personally dont care too much about transferring up. I like the Pokemon in their old generations! The pixel art looks better and it feels more special.

sorry, went to bed. These are the DS games! HeartGold/SoulSilver. I think theyre the best, lots of content and the pixel art is the best imo. They nailed the aesthetics with these games.

it’s luck but I do work hard at it! :blobcatoverlycute: well, work as in…gambling the odds with determination. :kannafight: I specifically hunt using the features in the game if they offer them. I was hunting for these starters and now I can play the game with a shiny boi :blobcatbughunter:
HGSS is the most viable game for shiny hunting starters in the whole series, because you can see all three right on the little spinny table! You don’t have to check their summary page, just save before you interact, quickly scroll through the lil guys, then soft reset. Three chances at once that you see a shiny! You can’t decide which you get, but that randomness is part of the fun. :ablobcatbongo: plus, the games are pretty dang great to play through.
I shiny-hunted the starter in Soul Silver for the first time, and that took a few days. I didn’t mind whichever starter I got. I was watching stuff in the background as I soft reset. It was super exciting to finally see that lil guy and it made the playthrough even more memorable :blobcataww:

I went to a coffee shop I’ve never been to to try out something new and get out of the room, the girl there was pretty and friendly at first! Then I went to the market that sells foreign style foods, and the owner was upselling all these new things to try :02_laugh: I couldn’t say no! Oh and it was a good excuse to try new things there, too, and the owner was friendly with me.
