Simple question, is the higher altitude cooling trend a result of the lower altitude warming trend? i.e. More energy is being retained at lower altitudes, and thus not transferred to the higher altitudes?

A short video I put together that shows how well the scientists at Exxon did back in 1982. The graph from my previous post is shown, then followed by overlays of CO2 data collected from Mauna Kea and temperature data from NOAA. The trend line is by me; I just used a simple polynomial fit in Excel. The temperature plot from NOAA is displaced downwards a bit to align “0” at 1980.
You can see that the predicted trends by Exxon were slightly high, but pretty close to the data we’ve collected since the report was issued.

*Exxon* knew (their scientists did, anyway). An internal report prepared for Exxon management in 1982 predicted the rise in CO2 levels and temperatures that, if anything, slightly overstated the values we see now. Of course, they kept their findings to themselves.

That looks great. Do the students have input into the “I can…" statements, aside from labs or whatever? That is, do you have a way for them to answer that question directly? It would be interesting to compare their perception of “I can calculate molarity” to what you are seeing in assignments.

I once had an interesting conversation about inorganic nomenclature with a colleague. Briefly, I was enthusiastic because I liked to link it to what chemistry was going on (specifically, the rationale for the way ionic substances are named as opposed to molecular substances). He didn't like taking much time at all teaching nomenclature as a subject. He just talked about it whenever it came up in other units and he needed to. We didn't get too analytical, like figuring out how skilled our respective students were at the end of the year, but I thought it was an interesting take.

While I’m griping, what's with these “cranes” shown in the opening credits? The reason a crane is shaped the way it is is because it is mounted on a long, skinny tower, anchored to the ground. If you have antigrav cranes, you don't need the long arm, the counterweight, or the swivel action. You just antigrav the stuff to where you need it.

Tossing this into the fediverse on the off chance someone is familiar with the problem and a fix.
My father is on a 2015 iMac (Intel Core i7) running macOS 12 Monterey.
PDFs are not opening properly, in a number of ways. This is the case for both Preview *and* Adobe Acrobat:
- If the app is not running, dragging a PDF over the app icon on the dock does nothing; the app doesn't launch.
- Double-clicking or selecting “Open With" from the contextual menu *will* launch the app and open the first document.
- Any successive documents will *not* open via double-clicking/the contextual menu/dragging to the dock.
- They will, however, be opened if “Open..." is selected from the File menu within the app.
- The same thing does *not* happen with TextEdit files or OpenOffice files - those apps behave normally and open successive files. It's just PDFs in Preview and Adobe Acrobat.
Any ideas? I find it odd that the problem exists over different apps, but not different filetypes. If I get desperate I will wipe and reinstall the system, but I'm hoping someone has a more refined fix before I have to resort to that.

Just got in from the dog walk… The evening walk is definitely going to be a short “maintenance” walk!
You might find some shady spots by the river (either one 😉) - there’s a decent breeze out there, too.
Not sure if it’s heat related, but the fireflies in my neighbourhood were *glorious* last night. One of the houses on my street has a “natural”, pollinator-friendly yard and it was downright glittery. I actually stopped and stared for a while.
That said, I’m going to make use of the A/C + basement today, for sure.

Fun fact, I used to do a demo in chemistry class where I would try to set a sugar cube on fire. They don't burn well, if at all, by themselves. Then I smeared some cigarette ash on it (generously supplied by the kids in the smoking area, back when the school had one of those 🙄), and it burned just fine. The metal oxides in the ash acted as catalysts for the sugar combustion.

If you go to the link (https://ssimpkin.carto.com/viz/126c8e26-17a5-11e6-907b-0e5db1731f59/embed_map), you'll see that there is no 1933 imagery for south of this area, but there are some 1945 pics. They show Clyde as a short connector from Baseline to Merivale, no northbound segment from Baseline, at least nothing resembling a road.

I managed to find some 1933 aerial pics of the area, and combined a few of them to compare with the modern layout of the area. I took a screenshot from Google Earth and distorted it a bit to match the aerial pics.

In 1933 the quarry was *just* getting started. There seems to be some kind of road/path that follows a straight line from Carling to Baseline. At the time, perhaps it was a slow, steady climb up the hill, but someone must have given up on the idea as the carve-out from the quarry straddles the old path, and now you have the aforementioned cliff.

Asking for advice - I just gave another presentation yesterday where, as usual, I wanted to talk about far more than I had time for.
I'm thinking the solution to that would be a blog of some sort, where I could dump those ideas, hone them, maybe categorize them if I have the energy. It would be mostly text and pics, but the ability to post the odd video and allow for downloading of docs would be good.
No idea where to start. Ideally, I'd want a Canadian platform, and full ownership of my posts. No “we own everything you write” in the fine print.
I'm not interested in making money, but not opposed to paying a little to be on a good platform. But the posts have to be accessible to all.
I know* if I paid for hosting, I could take care of the rest. But it feels like overkill, with all the blogging platforms already out there. On the other hand, always nice to run things out of my own domain.

I took my car to a mechanic to get the steering fixed - I paid in advance to make sure he could cover the cost of parts. When I went back to get the car, the steering was still broken, but he gave me a cheque for $200! No other mechanic ever gave me money back! It happens from time to time when the forecast is reliable, and severe, enough. Much better than those 6 AM announcments!
I worked in a couple of schools that had high bussed-in populations, and they were ghost towns on snow days. But, rules are rules, so we still opened and got all those teachers out on the roads so they could supervise empty classes... At least you could get some marking done.

Ugh, having a day. In addition to all this <waves at everything>, our dog is getting his upper canines removed today 🙁 Poor puppy...
One of our relatives had a dog that had to have several teeth removed, and was much happier afterwards. She was obviously in discomfort before and it was a relief. But with Frankie, we're catching a situation before it gets to that point. Feels like a mistake, but we would have regrets further down the road.
Post-op edit: He did fine, and is slowly getting his sea legs back… Probably wondering wtf…

Good morning #Ottawa! It's a beautiful sunny day out there...
Fun fact, -18°C is the temperature at which normal salt (NaCl) will not help melt ice. Also, at these kinds of temperatures and lower, water vapour from car exhaust freezes on contact with the ground. A good couple of days to exercise caution on the roads and sidewalks.
Also, it is a given that when I go on the dog walk today, my boogers will freeze upon stepping out the door, and I will be simultaneously too warm and a bit chilly in different parts of my body.

True, true. But I'm still going to act holier than thou/them - It seems like the state of the art is still at the point where you have to second-guess whatever gets spit up. That fact, alone, makes it worthless unless you already pretty much know what you are asking for.

Yeah - I saw a few from maybe before the convoy? But I probably watched them as a result of the convoy to see who we were dealing with. He's an asshole, through and through. Racist, too.

Yup, there's going to be lots of inertia... but we have people in the family that these changes will harm. I'm hoping I don't have to make the case too strongly to get people to change. I think the key is to set up a landing pad so they don't have to wander into the wilderness.
