Last Notes npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek The story of #cashu and #fedimint is a textbook example of why user experience beats technical superiority every time. People developing around nostr really need to keep this front and center. A lot of gains have been made in this area in the past year, but nostr is still difficult to use even for technically adept people. Cashu won not because it was technically superior but because it was easier to use both for users and developers who wanted to build tools that leveraged Cashu. I see Cashu everywhere, Fedimint is basically non-existent. Cashu is a custodial way of storing BTC which exposes uses to significant risks of being deliberately rugged, having their mint hacked, or having their mint just randomly go offline one day forever. Fedimint mostly solved this by having coins locked up among multiple mints, now these bad eventualities required cooperation between multiple parties. But at this point, fedimint is looking more and more like a footnote in #Bitcoin development history. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek How hard is the "80 GB of storage with pruning" requirement for #BTCPayserver. I'm having trouble coming up with a good rationale for why 20GB wouldn't work. #bitcoin npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek One of the biggest barriers to merchant adoption of tools like #btcpayserver is hosting costs. While it's a no-brainer to pay for a $10/month VPS for btcpay if you have consistent BTC transactions coming in, most merchants lack surety that they will. I want to help merchant adoption by getting them started for free. What are some of the best cloud providers that have generous "firsts x months free" or "first x credits free"? Currently looking at vultr but curious as to other options. Bonus points if they take BTC. Many cloud providers I've seen charge a significant premium for storage, like the VPS is $4/month but 80GB of chain storage is going to cost an additional $15. #bitcoin npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek These answers are all correct, but a transaction does not get confirmed until the next block. Blocks are typically 10 minutes apart. If you pay a lower fee, it may take a few blocks. Or you may get lucky and the next block is seconds after your tx is created. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Looking to follow somebody who posts about #entrepreneurship self-improvement and building companies. Think the "knowledge of the top 1%" video clips you see shared everywhere. Any suggestions? #asknostr npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Accepting lightning for merchants requires a lightning node be online 24/7. The common solution for this is #btcpay server, but this is quite heavy (and therefore impossible) for many online merchants on shared hosting. But @npub1xnf…lpr5 "node in a phone" is lightweight enough to be run on Android. Can a BTCPay server be configured to use a "node in phone" style node? Is there some similarly lightweight option we can use which does what #BTCPay Server does but with the overhead of #zeus? #bitcoin #asknostr #lightningnetwork #asknostr npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Can't censor Bisq or other P2P methods. There will always be a way. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Sorry to hear that Trey, we never know how long we have npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek DISAGREE npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Anybody got an easily linkable source for the S&P stat? npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek endthefud.org would be a good starting place npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek They usually haven't when given the choice because foreign cars where better and/or cheaper. Tariffs may force them to buy American by artificially inflating the price of foreign cars. So we get worse cars for the same price we used to pay for better cars. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Get second opinions npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek If you post more info about your current online sales setup, people may be able to give more tailored suggestions. Another option is opennode (if you have your own woocommerce/magneto installation but don't want to host a btcpay server) npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Due to the nature of DMs in nostr, shopstr can be a bit unreliable. By all means, list your stuff there, but also having your own site which accepts lightning is probably the way to go. BTCPay Server is a great option, it integrates with woocommerce and magneto. I believe squarespace also allows BTC lightning payments. I ALWAYS search for a vendor who takes BTC for anything I shop for, excited to see more joining. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek BREAKING: Kentucky has become the FIFTH US state to pass a Bitcoin Rights law! This law protects the right to self-custody, the right to transact in Bitcoin, and the right to run a node. Satoshi Action is doing awesome, on the ground, legislative work and made this happen. If you care about how #Bitcoin is treated legally in the US, kick them some sats https://www.satoshiaction.io/ npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek About two years ago, I decided that I wasn't going to donate to any non-profit or open source software project that didn't take Bitcoin. When asked for donations, I would ask if they took Bitcoin and if they didn't, I'd say "that's too bad, hopefully you change your mind in the future". Reception to this has gone pretty well, a number of them have come back later and asked me for help in taking Bitcoin and I've pointed them to some resources and got to be their first BTC donor. This year, I have a new plan: I'm not donating to any non-profits or OSS projects that hide the fact that they take Bitcoin donations. Many of them take BTC, but you'd never know if you went to their donate page, it's squirreled away somewhere on their website. I get that your regular checkout flow doesn't support Bitcoin, so you need a separate page for that, but it really should be mentioned on your main donation page as an option. I think some places do this because they're ashamed to take BTC or they think it's controversial. If you're ashamed to take my money, you won't get it, end of story. We'll see how this new plan goes. #bitcoin #nonprofits #donations npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek So sad to know this project will soon be coming to an end https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cohVHaVMBl8 npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek The rush is that several major social media platforms are basically collapsing right now. That's a decade in the making. We are missing massive opportunities to onboard users. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Bitcoiners are really, really bad at branding. Examples: Custodial vs non-custodial: Who chose these words? Nobody knows what they mean if they aren't steeped in BTC lore. Self-custody? Much better. Nutzaps: Cool tech, but 70% of people are going to not use this tech because they don't want to be "nutted on". I get the memes are cool but c'mon. Nostr: Primarily pitched as a tool where "you can't be censored". Most people's minds instantly go to that ONE ANNOYING GUY who got kicked from their discord server for posting racist memes. "Un-cancelability" is of interest only to the minority of the population. You know what is popular? Better privacy. Being able to choose how your feed is sorted. Not having ads. Being free. Not having divisive bullshit shoved into your feeds. Being decentralized/not feeding Meta et al. Bitcoin for merchants: ZERO PERCENT FEE. WE SHOULD BE YELLING THIS FROM THE ROOFTOPS, instead, most promotional things I see about Bitcoin are about: supply, inflation resistance, fast transaction times, etc. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek 2600 magazine if you like anti-authoritatian tech npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Because bluesky is not meaningfully decentralized in any way. Because it's not decentralized, somebody else will decide what goes in your feed and who you are allowed to follow. It has all the same broken incentives faced by Twitter, Meta, etc that lead us to the current wasteland that is social media. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Get somewhere setup to contribute to "bounties" for this and I will pitch in some sats npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek We frankly aren't ready for a big influx of users. 90% of them will leave when they encounter nostr's MANY UX issues. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek If you accept that non-citizens have no right to due process, you are accepting that citizens have no right to due process. Because all the government needs to do is accuse you of being a non-citizen and there go all your rights, because you have no opportunity to offer evidence to the contrary. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Love this YouTube creator. If you are interested in space research. you can donate your spare computational power to finding asteroids, pulsars, and more with BOINC. BOINC is open source software that runs on your computer in the background (won't slow things down!) and contributed to scientific research. Anybody can start a research project and use the BOINC platform, you choose which projects to "crunch" for (contribute to). Works on PC, Mac, and Linux. https://boinc.berkeley.edu npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek If you want private prompting, run the AI locally. Everything else is just thoughts and prayers. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek They really are though. The blockchain contains the named resources and a list of owners (keypairs). Those who control those keys can update the named resource (the IP or whatever it points to). When the named resource isn't paid for in x days, the person who comes along to buy it first at the highest value via a simple auction system (similar to current tx fee market) becomes the new owner for x days with options to renew (continue paying without auction period) before expiration. Ethereum solved this like 10 years ago. Bitcoin is yet to catch up. For no reason. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek My nostr dudes, what would you say is the closest male equivalent to the Barbie movie? I love that shopstr exists and I'm excited to be a frequent participant there once it's stabilizes a bit. I just tried to load it (Firefox, Linux) and got Application error: a client-side exception has occurred (see the browser console for more information). Deleting all private data in the browser solved this, until I went to orders and now I get it again. Here's some stuff from console, hope it's helpful. After a few refreshes this error disappeared. I've placed an order through there but DMs don't seem to work. And I have to reload by browser cache (delete all cookies stored data and re sign in) to make new stuff show up (listings, DMs, whatever). It seems really rough around the edges. I eventually got my order but if I wasn't a level 10 linux tryhard I don't think I would have. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek If you just use it (or something like @npub1h2q…w8ch ) to batch together a few orders before sending it to an on-chain or lightning wallet, it seems reasonable. Lightning really sucks at the "receiving $5 at a time over your current inbound liquidity limit" problem. Cashu will fix this. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Thank you for posting this and not being afraid to call it out. I'm glad nostr exists and that I get to have interesting conversations with people like you on it though :) npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek *censorship-resistant. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Nostr is far from the most censorship protocol out there, some have been around for decades. Look at Freenet/Hyphanet, Tor, I2P, etc. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Would be helpful if you posted more specifics about how it didn't work, error messages, etc. Pis can run a full node but not all Pis can. I've just seen plenty of fully-functional P2P protocols over the years and don't think centralizing around relays is necessary or good. I love a lot about nostr, but not that part. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek bitaxe. None of them will be profitable unless you have free electricity. And storage/delivery can be done by nostr relays, fully P2P, via DHT, IPFS, or any other hash-based storage table. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Sometimes my client has to go "find" a note from a random relay, often because my relay got the "re-tweet"/reply but not the original. There's no reason a relay should be needed for this operation, a DHT like a magnet link or IPFS would work fine. I assume event IDs aren't hashes, but given that they are signed, you have a similar way to verify authenticity of the note. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek travala npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek If you know C++, look at BOINC (boinc.berkeley.edu). It's a cross-platform, open source tool and permission-less network (anybody can run a boinc project) for distributing large computational loads to computers of volunteers. It's used for cancer research, finding asteroids, and sifting through data from the large hadron collider. Massive userbase but very little dev time. Some of the issues on the github even have bounties on them. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Would be helpful to post what error message you're getting or more information so somebody can help diagnose it npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Because they don't even pretend to have due process, so they'll just take anybody and throw them in prison if the US asks them to (and pays them or provides a favor or whatever else we're doing to make it worth their while) npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek You can just cure diseases. When you don't understand how the world works, it's easy to think everything is a conspiracy. There's a reason that belief in conspiracies is correlated with lower intelligence scores no matter which intelligence metric you are using. It makes a complicated world seem simple, it seduces you with one of the most common and insidious human biases: Confirmation bias. An example of this is automatically believing anybody because they're "alternative". Alternative health bros who would never get a shot in their arm that's been studied across millions of people from multiple data sources and by multiple research groups/organizations, but who will gladly guzzle the latest health product because some random YouTuber who is "alternative" endorses it. The same people who practice self-custody and would would NEVER fall for a phishing scam fall for some of the most obvious and time-tested scams out there: selling health products with zero safety or testing data behind them. Snake oil is a game as old as time. You know what you call alternative medicine when it actually works? And has been tested in a double-blind placebo-controlled trial? Medicine. https://image.nostr.build/3448bed84d18dc74e03c5e0487524987703878a985031aa9d30b186c2a12f4dd.png npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek bless up fort nakomoto 🏰🫡 npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Tell your creator friends and friends in non-profit organizations: every two months, Nostr users send 4.5 mil zaps for $1.9M USD value. They want a piece of this pie. It's much easier for users to donate cents or fractions of a cent regularly than larger amounts, the psychological barriers are totally different. Iris.to is an easy client to get started with, comes with a built-in cashu wallet for receiving zaps. This seems like an obvious thing that should exist but I can't find anything about it. Bitcoin's scripting capabilities on L1 is probably plenty to handle this. DNS is the perfect example of a system where we rely on centralized custodians when a decentralized, blockchain-based approach would work much better. #asknostr #bitcoin npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek NGL "I have unique hobbies as well" was a pretty good comeback. ETH has the Ethereum Name Service but I am aware of no equivalent for Bitcoin, hopefully I am wrong. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Vibe coding is writing code using entirely or almost entirely AI tools npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Majority of people's homes also don't have a satellite dish npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Won't take days if you have a fast connection. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Who in the US is working on ending capital gains tax for Bitcoin? I want to send them money. NO OTHER FOREIGN CURRENCY has to deal with this tracking every coin and reporting gains/losses bullshit. #asknostr #bitcoin #regulation npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Yes tx means transaction. I've heard of GNUCash and even tried it once but found the whole thing way too confusing, so idk how to track btc in there but maybe it supports it. npub12xgsu4nad7np6l3e9x8exf26evs202jqkc2ghnuyw4c7hrda9cmqkf32x5 makeasnek Final note, I promise, is that this is all so fucking complicated because BTC is discriminated against as a currency. NO OTHER FOREIGN CURRENCY has to deal with this capital gains bullshit. If you are using BTC for your business, kick some money to some BTC trade associations and sign up for/donate to https://www.satoshiaction.io/ They are the ones who got the BTC reserve bills to happen. Participate in elections, especially primaries. We can end this capital gains nonsense if we push.
