I don't think you ever can truly guarantee correct code. On some semantic level, there's always potential for logic errors, and the higher up the abstraction pancake tower you go, the harder it is to catch them.

well, the meta stuff has changed a bunch over the years, but the language itself can still be compiled just fine. All major C compilers support every C spec since K&R and up to at least C17 (though most support C23 as well by now).
Meanwhile look at the other major languages around: Python doesn't bother guaranteeing compatibility within the same major release, Java has new major releases like EA sports games, Rust can't even be bothered with making sure that their own compiler can be compiled with versions older than n - 2.

Rust's only real guarantee is that it doesn't allow out of bounds memory access (something most languages these days don't allow unless you use explicitly unsafe ways of handling memory), but rust programmers treat it like it guarantees good code all the time always no matter what since the compiler rejects a lot of perfectly good code if you don't write some boilerplate it demands, which gives people the false sense that if the compiler accepted the code then it must be perfect.
Like, in some ways this is what INTERCAL made fun of, and now we're told it's innovation.

For all of its flaws, C got a few things right: it's darn simple, and it has stable specs you can rely on. C code written 30 years ago still compiles fine today assuming all of the libs it requires are still around. All other major languages have had several releases with breaking changes since then (hell, with some languages like Python it's a miracle if you can get software written 5 years ago to run on the latest Python release)

I think normally it's to the absolute truth, so you have to explicitly state "to the best of my knowledge" as part of the oath to shield yourself there, but also I'm not a lawyer so I have no idea.

I don't think it's so much people not seeing fascism, it's more that you have to 1) have a certain level of political knowledge to recognize the fascism before it's painfully obvious, and 2) be of a certain political leaning to call it for what it is instead of either agreeing with it or hoping to use it for your own political gain. And that political leaning happens to be exactly the one that everyone is told is evil and delusional, thus if they say something's fascist they must be wrong and the thing they say is fascist must most definitely be not fascist.

- most clients that I'm aware of can log chats, the server isn't involved with that
- you don't need to see every single message ever sent even while you're not there, it's fine, you can miss some conversations, it's not the end of the world
- WeeChat and irssi both just work. A rule of thumb with IRC clients is: avoid anything that looks flashy, extra avoid anything with "modern" on the front page. If it has barely changed in the last 20 years then it's exactly what you're looking for.

Can we please talk for a moment about how godawful the EU's emissions testing is? It all focuses on laboratory testing which lasts maybe a few hours and won't work the engine for more than a few hundred km, so manufacturers get to cheat all the time with engineering choices that drastically lower the emissions in the super short term but then make them much much worse in the medium and long term (along with hurting longevity).
One example of that would be low tension piston rings which allow for very low friction when the car is new but have much lower tolerances and stop being able to collect the oil properly after a few thousands of km of use, resulting in the cars burning significant amounts of oil to the point the manufacturers just tell you in their service manuals to check and top up the oil levels.
If you don't know how cars do: burning oil is absolutely horrific both for the environment and for health, because it does *not* burn cleanly (it's also why bikes with 2-stroke engines are outright banned in most cities). Achieving absolutely 0 oil burning isn't exactly possible, but 20 years ago it would've been a sign of a sharted motor in need of a rebuild if it burned enough oil to require top ups between oil changes. Meanwhile today that's just what manufacturers tell you to expect.

had Java been less verbose, Python might actually not have picked up like it did. Java enjoyed a time in the spotlight as a favourite for education and beginners, so people might have used it more for larger projects, but given how verbose it is (and how awful some of the tooling is), it lost that to Python.

the issue with creating an alternative to Linux is the sheer scale of the thing. It's an absolute behemoth that is completely unmaintainable without an army of developers paid to work on it full time; some BSDs managed to stay more manageable but with more limited hardware support.
Main options would be FreeBSD and OpenBSD; FreeBSD mostly focuses on server stuff but is mostly usable on desktops; OpenBSD focuses on desktop use but also sticks closer to the old UNIX ways so it's not for everyone; hardware support is also limited as mentioned previously.
