Yeah disagree with the Bod here.... Likes should pull up emote window, that's pretty much standard behavior on all clients except Coracle at this point.
Although -- I do like the idea of exposing a generic +1 kind of like that's emote-less, as this increases compatibility with Mastodon (yeah yeah I know no one cares).
Coracle's "like" reads as a red heart on other clients.... Which I'd rather just be a generic "+1"

Yeah it's not necessarily "on brand" for the Nostr crowd, but it's not obvious to me that the "go off grid and grow your own food" approach is the best way to preserve one's freedom....
Agriculture enforces being both bound to a particular plot of land, as well as engaging in a form of economic activity that is highly "legible" to the State. Urban living, by contrast, allows for both movement and economic activity that in many contexts is effectively untraceable.
Where I live in "dense American city", black and grey markets exist everywhere. Certain aspects of city life are fundamentally anarchic, in the sense that they can't be practically governed... For good or ill.

A license plate number, which is connected to a well-structured and maintained database by the State, is always going to be leagues easier to identify someone than a grainy camera photo of the side of someone's face as they pass by.
For evidence of this look no further than ICE: as part of their totalitarian ethnic cleansing exercise, they've been tasked to round up mass numbers of people off the street. Their tactics, at least the area I'm in, have largely shifted towards going after people living in more sparse suburbs, because they're more car-dependent and thus easier to track and abduct.

In most industrialized nations, driving has always been a State-privileged activity.
The only ways to actually travel anonymously are walking, biking, and even most forms of public transportation. Ironically these are rejected by most bitcoiners, as they are rarely practical outside of dense urban areas, which this cohort tends to reject for other political reasons.
But I strongly believe this is a situation where "exit" is the only viable option. Consider how you can make choices to reduce your dependence on driving. I get it, for many Americans this is tough because most people plan their lives around car dependence.... But it's possible. There are places where one can live car-free in America.

I've been doing a lot of side-by-side play testing of #Amethyst and #Wisp... An impression that I had of the latter was that the interface felt too crowded somehow.
I couldn't exactly figure it out until I took these screenshots... As it turns out, Amethyst had a white-space indent on the left side of each feed (highlighted).
Somehow that makes it feel less "crowded" and easier to read quickly, for me at least...

I'm probably going to be the only one here to say: Be careful with that.
I have plenty of heterodox ideas and lifestyle practices, some of which overlap with the Nostr audience (freedom tech, libertarianism, etc) and others that don't (urbanism).
But in lots of cases, being on the cutting edge means being on the "bleeding edge" -- lots of stuff that's on the frontier just doesn't work that well, and can be fraught with danger.
You always have to keep in mind: *Most* settlers of a new land wind up not surviving. Do I think I'm part of the special 1% who will? Is that belief well-founded, or is it hubris?

I get it... Throughout most of this century, coding was the pathway to a high-income job affording middle-class or better status in one the wealthiest parts of the USA (SF Bay area).
Coders worked in environments where they got to show up at 11, tell off their bosses when they felt they were crossing ethical lines, explore creative side-projects, publish their work as open-source projects... And if the "suits" didn't like it, an engineer could say "see ya," slip on their Crocs and stroll over to the company next door.
All that's changing now, not just from AI but other economic factors, and it's going to come as a "generational" shock to this class.

I've been thinking about something like this for decentralized location sharing... It would probably be a custom "kind" but you would have your phone post an encrypted geohash to relays, with a level of precision defined by whomever you wanted to see it.
For instance you could just share "city-level" details with certain people ... Allow you to know if someone's "in town".
Or with more select people you share exact location

Well how I would envision this it would be a separate "kind" because otherwise it would clog up people's NIP-17 DM inbox... So it would be "opt-in" in that sense.
You would publish the information encrypted only to the people whom you wanted to see it. And then they'd have to have a client that would fetch that data.

You could (say) broadcast a city-level location geohash to npubs that you might want to get a beer with if they happen to be in town, without broadcasting to the entire network....

Yeah the original games were great, they were really unconventional for at least two reasons, (a) they were originally released only on Mac OS, which by the mid-90's was decidedly not "the gaming platform", and (b) they employed a vastly more imaginative palette in terms of monsters, environments and storylines than anything else out there.
The competitor was Quake, which while technically more advanced in its 3D, had (a) Zero plot and (b) had like 4 colors in it's palette.... browns & blacks for dungeons and bright red for gore.
I've been out of the FPS game for most of this century (hah), but from what I can see, Marathon just looks different from anything else out there, at least in terms of its aesthetic -- and that gives me hope that it really is a sort of spiritual successor

Yeah I've beaten this drum before but I think Mastodon, as the largest (de-facto) decentralized social media protocol, is key here.
Honestly for *most* people who (aren't far-Right and) want to leave legacy social media, Mastodon is probably the best choice. Nostr's just too small and technically demanding for large scale adoption at the moment.
But in the long term, permissionless monetization is what will pull people here... Once the network gets to a certain size, influencer types will be able to make more money here with zaps than Elon's "affiliate" program or any other centralized platform.
In the meantime we can (and should) interoperate with Mastodon while that network grows.

Yes -- this is why I'm very skeptical that current AI's can "do science", or really large swaths of novel creative work.
There has to be some capability of using "first principles" to deduce new ideas, which is very difficult (impossible?) for a stochastic neural network trained on a large pre-existing dataset.
In fact, these ideas would probably get filtered out as "hallucinations"! .... One bot's 6 fingers is another bot's new artistic concept 😁
