if your device is lost, you should assume it and all its data compromised, wipe if you can, but cut losses, rotate credentials, and take data breach precautions.
Reducing theft incentives is a seperate interesting argument, not one I'm convinced is worth the e-waste, or couldn't be solved through other, less *hardware-astetified* methods.

this all sounds good in the moment but in 10 years when we're staring down a mountain of e-waste that's all perfectly good hardware it all starts to feel pointless.
I frequently see second-hand business laptops in lots all with locked BIOS passwords.
Perfectly good devices, likely permanently fried because some company went bust.

Every HackerNews post about IPv6 has some of the worst, most privileged, idiotic, vibe-coded, proprietary, ignorant, 16bit, capital-guzzling, unicorn takes I've ever known on the subject:
- IPv6 addresses are *too hard to remember*.
So? You're not meant to remember addresses, that's why we have DNS, write it down, literally a non-issue.
- IPv6 is confusing and I don't want to learn something new.
That's a personal issue buddy, either start reading or get left behind, that's what you said about AI right? More things that you depend on this transition.
- NATing has solved the IP limit problem so there's no point.
NATing is a plaster slapped onto brain bleed, easy and cheap, but ineffective, it causes a wide range of usability problems, such as blanket IP bans, restrictions on self-hosting, connectivity issue for VPNs both private and corporate.
To make matters worse, the effects are significantly worse in poorer countries, while Europe, China and the USA have a bounty of IPv4s to use (though China's still aren't enough), India has been on critically short supply for a while now with reports of *multiple NATed network layers* being issued. Imagine if you got banned from Valo because your neighbour 4 districts away got caught cheating.
- We've been trying for 40 years and it hasn't worked so let's give up.
OK, we're going to give up on solving world hunger too then because that's clearly not getting anywhere, and the energy crisis too while we're at it, just shut it all down.
Just because you personally haven't seen the progress or felt its effects doesn't mean its not happening, people smarter than you have been working on this before you were born, and at this rate might continue to work on it after you switch careers to Goose Farming.
- IPv6 hasn't worked so let's just make IPv7.
Insane take, despite how it looks, IPv6 support is extremely widespread and ready to go, the reluctance of big tech and ISPs is purely due to the cost implication and lack of enforcement, creating a brand new spec now would enforce another 40 year delay just to assuage your own personal opinion.
- IPv6 is a security risk because the router isn't NATing.
Misunderstanding of what NATing does. Even with a public-facing IP on every device, ports are still protected by the router's firewall.
- IPv6 is a privacy issue because now you can easily identify every device in a home by its public IP.
A valid concern, *if* it hadn't been identified and resolved with the [Privacy Extensions to SLAAC](https://www.internetsociety.org/resources/deploy360/2014/privacy-extensions-for-ipv6-slaac/) that randomises your IP address after a set time period, mitigating the problem to that of your NATed IPv4 Public IP, if not making it more private by muddying the telemetry waters.

Hmm WireGuard and VeraCrypt developers both become unable to ship updates because Microsoft locked their account or revoked their signing cert.

I initially thought HDR was just about expanding the colour range past 16,000,000 (an affront to god IMO), but I think it's also about additional metadata per pixel which can specify desired brightness among other things.
So, most monitors can't adjust brightness on a per pixel bassis, most have a backlight that might be one or more LEDs, so what should a monitor do if half the screen wants to be dim and the other half wants to be bright?
Some fancy TVs have "zones" across the panel to try and mitigate this so different parts can be different brightnesses.
OLEDs go a step further and control brightness on a per pixel basis which gives the most <i>accurate</i> representation, but a new problem arises.
Its MY computer, what if I want to adjust the display for my own comfort? Most HDR settings make the display very bright, I guess because it looks good? But it's a poor experience for 3am when my eyes are on fire. Enabling HDR hands control off to the software and prevents changing the monitor settings (generally) because that's what the spec demands, that's how you guarantee accuracy.
To help mitigate this problem both Gnome and Windows implemented a brightness slider in the HDR settings, which is just fascinating. The monitor can't implement controls because that's not HDR, but the OS can?
Attached are pictures of my monitor before and after enabling HDR, obviously this can't be a great representation but it's clear how washed out the bright orange Ubuntu wallpaper becomes. Personally, I prefer the look when HDR is disabled, but I'm a big fan of vibrant colours, some people might prefer to know their monitor is more accurate to what was intended (presumably).

Ubuntu finally supports HDR in 25.04, I've had a HDR monitor for several years but never been able to use that feature.
Anyway, tested it out on the Live CD, it just made vibrant colours become washed out. HDR is complex and weird, it's like a standard implementing multiple different things at once where the end result is most things look worse or burn your irises with brightness. Doesn't help that a monitor can implement only parts of the standard and still advertise as "HDR".
I've heard it's better if your HDR supports True Black, like an OLED, otherwise doesn't seem to be worth it, though there's probably more nuance to it than that.

I'm going to make a fedi-bot. Every time a film is announced the bot makes a post saying "I'm going to leak the full copy of <film> before it releases.".
Then, when one of the films is inevitably leaked by someone else but the trail goes cold, the authorities will investigate my bot as a potential culprit, I mean it's clearly admitted to the crime, that's an easy arrest, easy win.
So, they'll spend weeks to subpoena the ISP for the address of the IP address, it'll lead to a raspberry Pi I stole from a warehouse break-in 6 years prior stuffed into the ceiling of Birmingham New St McDonalds connected to their free Wi-Fi which is actually a proxy for a second Raspberry Pi I stole from an Oxford University Computer Science demonstration during an open-day 4 years prior using a SIM card I took from a 3G connected Kindle I found in the local tip, which I've connected to a car battery I stole out of a random Citreon in London a week ago, hooked up to nearby private solar-field I spliced off of somewhere in rural midlands.
On the Raspberry Pi will be gigabytes of compressed encrypted data each one named after a random slew of political party members and a date. The encryption passwords are 4000 characters of garbage, the targz files are all cat pictures I harvested from Reddit. It's worthless intel, they'll have wasted *decades*.
