2. We discussed: Does the veil mean anything? Reverend Hooper's sin? The community's? Does refusing to take off the veil constitute a sin in and of itself? Hawthorne asks us to interpret but keeps its signification open or veiled.
3. One student said the veil brought out the community's desire for conformity. They should just deal with it!

Yes & thank you! My daughter's talented partner is also the designer! I dug up the lawn & did lots of planting with help. I feel like I know each plant intimately. Each has a story. The white rose my mother gifted us; the Moroccan daisy my daughter picked out. Even the stones! The decomposed granite that looks like the desert, which my husband loves. THANK YOU! Everyday I have a new favorite. It's hard to see in the photo but one of the trees is an Australian Grevellia and another is a Red Bud. I also love the mallows (the soil does too). They have gotten so big in a matter of months. Maybe my very favorite, though, is the Buchanan sage. It is such a cool plant.

I have been thinking a lot about flight 9525, whose co-pilot Andrea Lubitz flew his plane into a mountain. He wanted to die and (maybe?) thought bringing 149 people with him would make his death less frightening.
