One of the most frustrating parts of Tor, is even if the website wants to allow Tor, often their DNS provider may block Tor's DNS nodes from resolving the domain. Without the website owner (or even the end-user) from being aware.
DNS Providers such as Namecheap, GoDaddy, and Orangewebsite will most definitely restrict high quantity Tor queries. I've seen it first hand with out our project. And upstreams such as Verisign and even Iceland's' .is ISNIC registry may be the real culprits. Everyone will claim it's to stop abuse, which is logical. But the end result is harming privacy.
Even diagnosing this problem is a huge challenge, let alone solving it. But where other people give up, is a good place to start. The fresh HydraVeil release, tries to sync over Tor, if it fails..
a) It first tests if Tor even works against the official Tor Project API.
b) If it does, it checks if DNS is the problem. Will just the domain resolve via a Tor node?
c) If that Tor-node-DNS fails, It resolves the DNS to a non-Tor DNS provider like Quad9 via DoH, but proxied through Tor.
d) Now with the IP address in-hand, it goes directly to the IP address of the web service through Tor, but without ANY DNS. Then pretends it used the domain, when it asks the website for an SSL cert. Finally, HydraVeil manually verifies the SSL cert against it’s own local copy of Mozilla’s tools for Let’s Encrypt certificate authority.
This gives you the benefit of SSL encryption & Tor, but without allowing DNS providers to restrict Tor resolution. And doesn't slow you to 6 hops to do onions just for DNS, to download browsers. Today's release is open source. And this same blueprint can be applied to any app in the future. Web browsers, Monero/Bitcoin wallets, Nostr clients, anything that wants to use Tor but not be slowed to 6 hops by an Onion, just to resolve the domain.

Nextcloud vs Cryptpad
Nextcloud is slow because of the permissions related SQL database lookups. Even if many features are turned off, it still has slow load times on the web UI. Yes there are mobile apps slightly better. They are doing optional AI features now too. It's too much bloat in my opinion, too much feature creep without first focusing on the fundamentals. Only exceptions on the speed are doing it in your physical home, or have a CDN service.
Cryptpad is improving. It’s end-to-end encrypted docs for those who don’t know, while Nextcloud isn't encrypted but still slower for docs. Use it on a chromium based browser for faster decryption than Tor browser.
I'd recommend Cryptpad over Nextcloud. What do you think? If you've self-hosted nextcloud with success, I'm open to hearing your debate.

Age verification is rolling out in the UK
This means vendors such as Apple are now forcing age verification or your iPhone is "child proof" locked. [1][2]
This is similar to laws in California or Australia. In fact, many linux distros may be requiring age verification. [3]
Some of these verifications can be bypassed with a VPN. However, the next logical step is politicians will say, "we have to restrict VPNs or block Tor IPs".

Session team lacked funding to continue, their new coin sales didn't go well enough to fund operations.
I personally have criticisms of their approach outside of the official reasons. They could have used their existing DNS system to have rotating keys (PFS) by rotating the name to a new account. The lead Session dev told our team in an interview that they didn't want to do this because it forced sale of the name to have the security. But without a product, you have no funding.

Seattle Android/Router VPN users,
I am determined to make sure you experience no downtime. One of the two datacenters for this location is doing a (roughly) one hour maintenance starting at noon EST today (April 20).

FBI extracted deleted Signal messages, even after the app was uninstalled.
When Signal messages arrive, iOS stores push notification previews locally on the device. In this case, those previews stayed behind even after Signal was uninstalled.
- Only incoming messages were captured this way
- Disappearing messages that had already vanished inside Signal were still recoverable from the notification cache
-This is iOS behavior, not a Signal vulnerability. And likely impacts other ALL apps on iOS.
The quick fix, to turn it off:
Signal → Settings → Notifications → Show → set to "No Name or Content"
You'll still get a notification ping, but iOS just won't cache anything useful.

Top 6 Android Privacy Tips
6) Don't use or give out your SIM card's real phone number.
Instead, use VoIP (internet -to-> regular phone) with a VPN. This appears in calls or texts to be a regular number, but hides your location from the cell tower. Only use your real underlying SIM card for getting data.
5) Don't literally buy the phone in your real name.
The IMEI hardware identifier then is following you around, and defeats the purpose of VoIP. We offer Pixel phones prices below Google's official store for Monero or Bitcoin. It can then eSIM with digital crypto plans, or cash for a physical SIM.
4) Use a burner Crypto Service for account sign-ups.

3) See if your bank offers YubiKey.
Bank of America allows you to declare you're "going abroad" and switch from SMS confirm, to YubiKey. But they never check if you actually leave. This means you can avoid maintaining a real SMS line to bypass their VoIP tests. If you buy an SMS Zelle confirm from the exchange, then the seller can't access your bank account without both the password and the yubikey sign. That's wayy more secure than even an SMS line you own.
2) Abuse Shared Cell Tower IPs
When you connect to a cell tower, you're sharing the same IP address as every other user of that tower. This means even if your VPN is really logging, or compromised by memory dumps at the datacenter, there is still an anonymity pool. As our previous content has repeated, Mullvad is Sweden, has really no ability to stop M247's US servers from a memory dump. Their "in memory" routine is really propaganda, if being in memory is the problem itself.
But when you use a VPN on your home ethernet, the VPN provider can identify you and you alone. If you re-use that same VPN subscription when you're at home (only your household on that IP), and when you're on the tower (sharing it with your entire city), you undo the magic of celltower's shared IPs.

You really can't get meaningful privacy if your entire operating system is compromised. By default both iPhone and stock Android do Wifi triangulation and Apple/Google share the notifications with the US government.

LinkedIn makes more money selling your data, than the job posting fees.
Even if your full real name is on LinkedIn, you want to avoid giving them your SIM card's real underlying phone number. Because then you're handing over to all these aggregated cross-service data brokers, what other services (that aren't in your real name) you sign up for, and what you do on those.
And you're handing over to the government, the full metadata of where you are 24/7, who you're standing near, and who you talk to and what you say on that number.
But LinkedIn will reject VoIP numbers, and most "crypto confirm" services will be detected. Because they buy a block of numbers, and are often labeled "landline" on APIs.

It does use it for that service. If you sell a service, you agree not to resignup or dispute for a year. Beyond a year, the buyer would have to pay again.
It wouldn't get classified as VoIP, but be used up for a given service. VoIP classification comes from API calls to find out the vendor and type.

Hi, thanks for writing in. Yes this is a legitimate concern, however there are a number of protections to help against this. The first point is that it’s 3 rounds, and if the buyer disputes all 3, then it spits the money among the 3 sellers. So the bigger risk is that your number uniquely doesn’t work, but the other sellers’ numbers do.
The second point is that it doesn’t count towards that service for your number. For example if it’s a Google account, then your number is still “unsold” or available for a future Google account sale. So you don’t lose that much.
A final point is that once the system has been going on longer, we can then adopt a trust score system. Where after a certain point, the Exchange can feel comfortable siding with the seller immediately in a dispute.

It would have users exiting the IP, but that is not per say a risk if it's a no KYC host. By upfront costs, we mean literally paying for it. As far as recommendations go, it depends on what country/location you'd be interested in doing. I see a Canada flag on your website, would you prefer to be the first Canadian spot? If you're serious about it, I can dig into which Canada host is good. I also need a German location, and I have a good host in mind. So if you're indifferent, probably Germany would be the first choice.

Many misunderstand screen size fingerprinting.
They assume that when a website fingerprints their browser, that it merely gets the display 'category', such as '1200x800'. But in reality, it gets your unique size down to the pixel, such as 1202x799. Each window will fill the display slightly differently, which absolutely can (and is) tracked across services.
In 2024 with version 1.64, Brave completely deprecated screen size fingerprinting, because it so frequently broke websites. Which is exactly what I'm screaming about, that modern web browsers force you to pick between privacy and functionality.

Tor Browser attempts to hide unique screen sizes by blocking and restricting Javascript, which causes services such as Google, Reddit, and Cloudflare to haze you.
That's why I'm excited about HydraVeil's feature to instantly create a new display, that realistically looks to websites like the browser window is your computer's full screen dimensions. Works with most Debian, Arch, and Fedora. So any of these are fine, it's the user's preference.
The browser profiles work inside Qubes, but its way overkill. SecureBlue it currently does not work.
Inside Whonix it works for socks5 proxies.

Thanks for writing in. There are some points to consider with p2p vpns. The first is that the upload speed for residential homes is significantly slower than download, and purposefully capped to prevent commercial use.
The second point is that residential homes actually have more surveillance than datacenters, not less. As the datacenters aggregate traffic to routers, that may or may not be tapped. Especially smaller datacenters are less monitored. Also, residential traffic often has to go through datacenters still to get to the homes. While homes have direct ISP monitoring.
The primary purpose of these types of residential home vpns is censorship. But there are alternatives that don’t have some of these negatives.
Finally, it is not logical for someone to be able to afford 1G bandwidth, but not have the 1 euro price of our VPN. I really think it’s unsustainable to expect us to develop services for free. And if the user can’t afford 1 euro, they’ve got to reevaluate their choices.
