A good solution to the anonymous call problem, if you do answer, is not say anything for the first five seconds. You’ll either hear the audible click over to the human or it’ll hang up. At five seconds, no immediate response to the hello is a hang up. Not that you should answer a call you don’t know anymore, but some people have to.

Well, it’s also part of the economics… toll-free is called party pays, so you’re ceding your privacy for an archaic long distance payment model. You’re always better off calling the non-toll number if you can find it, especially credit card companies terrified you’re calling them collect… yet another throwback. ;)

Google is at the center of every invasive aspect of digital advertising and it has been selling its users like chattel for ages. It’s been parsing personal email to better sell you stuff. It literally weaseled its way out of deprecating third-party cookies in Chrome when both Safari and Firefox did it years ago. This is not new. They’re just finally afraid after two antitrust losses.

Check out the apps and cut the cord. Everything you’re getting bent over a barrel for from Google and Microsoft is there already. Between that and Ubiquiti, I’m pretty much checked out of dumbass sysadmin stuff and can now focus on even dumberassed things.

I’m running a lot of my stuff on a Synology NAS. Lots of prepackaged, out of the box stuff that I would have spent hours tuning and configuring, plus some proprietary stuff for Photo, document libraries, cloud backup, etc. Worth looking into if you still have a static IP and don’t trust The Man.

I’d be satisfied with a happy median between today’s modern social network and the individually curated BBS systems of old. I liked choosing my Echoes and deciding what I wanted available in my experience. I also liked not having some of the stuff.

Well, someone decided that we didn’t need a browser anymore, so they made it into a crappier operating system that often runs on a crappy operating system so it could run crappier versions of crap applications that used to be compiled for the original crappy operating system but have been rewritten crappy to run on that crappier operating system that used to be a browser.
