Well, it’s happened. I have been reported by the school staffer about my stopping the meeting the other day to address her and another staffer’s deadnaming a trans student. I “crossed a boundary,” according to the report. They’ve taken me off the graduation ceremony I was set to interpret with a team. The graduation is for students I’ve known for years, some of them since kindergarten.
It is what it is. I’ve asked the agency to contact the school superintendent, as I suspect the order came from that staffer and not the administration, but we shall see.
I do not regret stepping out of my role. Not one bit.

I was a bit unprofessional today. I asked the host of a meeting to mute the zoom participants, then I addressed the two staff present in-person about their insistence on using a student’s dead name. One staffer used the excuse that the name is in the official paperwork. I called it an excuse and reminded them both that this is a human being. I might not be called back to interpret more of those meetings, but I couldn’t bear keep hearing them treat the student like that.
Bureaucracy is not an excuse for mistreating others.

I only got a couple pics at my local No Kings rally, but these signs begged to be photographed.
Friends and neighbors, I am lifted up. I’m thinking there were easily 150 people on the square of our little university town in east Alabama, and we got tons of honks and waves and smiles.
Notably, the only people flipping us off were middle-aged to old white men. Big shock.
This rally would NEVER have happened in our town during the first Turnip term. Things are changing, folks, and they’re changing in a big way. Hope is a powerful force.

Tactile ASL is far more than fingerspelling into the hand. It’s fully ASL, with the DeafBlind person tracking hand-over-hand. There are modification to signs, of course, and the person signing to the DeafBlind person adds important environmental information such as who’s speaking, where people are in the room, etc. ProTactile (PT) is a new-ish form of conveying information via haptics - even more environmental info is shared - if the presenter is pacing, when the crowd is laughing, where questions are coming from, etc. ProTactile is a specific “brand” of haptic communication. @npub1jpy…yfwv

To My Work Colleagues,
I deeply regret my recent poor choice of wording when attempting to share my photos of Sequoia National Park. After an illuminating conversation with Holly in HR, I now understand it was extremely inappropriate for me to stride into the break room and shout “WHO WANTS TO SEE SOME BIG NATURALS?” I will be personally apologizing to each of you when I return next month. For now, I will be reflecting on my missteps as I work with our dairy cows on the family farm. I’m sure it will be a great reset for me to spend time with our big mommy milkers!

Lots of new folks here from Blewski, and we’re glad to see you!
You might have noticed we’re kinda particular about adding alt-text to images (beige.party is among top performers when it comes to alt text, by the way), and I’d like to share why and what the benefits are.
Why: there are lots of amazing people on the fedi who are either blind or visually impaired, and alt text gives them access to the images shared here. Along with them, there are folks who have visual processing disorders, and there are folks who just who might not know what the hell they’re looking at. Alt text gives them access, too. A third reason why: creating things that are accessible from the start is just a great way to make your images available to everyone without having to go back to the drawing board. The concept is Universal Design, and it’s a great way to do pretty much everything.
Benefits: 1. People who frequently come up against barriers have a space where those barriers are reduced or eliminated, and they’re more likely to stick around. 2. Interaction improves, resulting in more and better connections, allowing for a social network that’s *actually* more social. 3. Other stuff that’s not occurring to me in the moment (I’m distracted by the workshop happening on my computer screen), but which I’m sure my brilliant friends can add.
Alt text is just the right thing to do.
A comment I’ve seen before is “But what if I don’t have the spoons?” Lots of folks on fedi, my own amazing wife included, have disabilities or conditions that limit their energy or capacity to engage in tasks such as adding alt text. That’s 100% understandable and okay. A great way to work with that is to write your alt text a little bit at a time in a notes app when you have the ability, then just cut & paste when you post your image. There’s no rush in interaction here, and we want *everybody* to have access to the amazing stuff shared. Please consider this when posting pics, charts, comics, etc. We all deserve a bit of beauty, learning, and laughter in our days.

I have a few friends who are so finely tuned that it seems like a superpower. “Ugh, that fruit juice is making me feel off.” Off what? I drink fruit juice, and I have tasted fruit juice, and then I need to pee a little while later. That’s it for me. I don’t feel an immediate reduction or boost in energy or alertness or anything - unless it’s dramatic.

This morning’s first workshop is about eating disorders, and the presenter mentioned poor interoception, or one’s ability to understand the signals the body is sending.
As a person with ADHD, I *really* relate to this. I’m not hot until I’m sweating, or cold until I’m shivering, or hungry until I’m starving, or in pain until I’m in agony. It’s a weird way to be.
I’ve always found it super impressive when someone has a really sensitive awareness of what’s going on in their body, like they’re immediately aware of how a certain food affects them. It often takes me literal years before I understand how certain foods make my body feel.

The smartest person I know is Deaf. He’s one of those people who’s intellectually insatiable and who is constantly making and modding stuff. He runs a robotics, printing, and drone program at a university, teaches at camps, teaches college courses, and has decided to pursue his Ph.D. You know, just for something to do. He can wire a house, convert a car to biodiesel, and install a tankless water heater, among myriad other skills he possesses.
Deafness is only a disability because most hearing people can’t sign.

The Silent Trail is notable because it was created by Boy Scouts from the Alabama School for the Deaf over several years. The Pinhoti connects to the Appalachian Trail, in case anyone was wondering.
