Yeah, before the blind migration in 22, there was/were a small portion of us blind people on here. Even then, there was tension, but I have never seen the roots of technology such a divide before, justifiably so, especially when you have CEOs that can't wait to toss away their workers, workers that need to eat. Of course, computers are made from unethical slave labor all the time, as an example, but I think the harms are very immediate to some folks.

I have long since ranted about the lack of tech literacy and how that’s intentional because fear comes from not knowing how stuff works and why it works. I just came across two different generations that have been trained to be afraid of links. younger than me, GenZ and older, GenX and so we broke down a link. The different parts of a URL, how to read a URL, the various components of a URL, how to find a URL inside of tracking garbage, how to tell the difference between HTTPS and HTTP and what each does and means, and why, and I explained what all the different parts of a URL tells the user and why. I think we went about tech literacy all wrong. People technically know how to use email, but they don’t know the half of what makes up an email address, why the @ sign is an @ sign to begin with, and a whole host of other things as just won example. That’s the kind of tech literacy I truly think we need more of. Like, instead of everybody telling me when I was younger that Wikipedia was terrible and should never be used, I wish my instructors would’ve taught me how to use the references. How to use the external links. How to track edits. Nothing complicated. I had to learn all that later on.
And guess what, after breaking down every component of a URL, and teaching others how to read a URL, thoroughly, the fear of links dissipated. No coding required! #Education #Technology #Tech

Just had a sighted person tell me they often use clients and programs that were made for us, they don’t use screen readers, but they use clients like oh i don’t know a blind Mastodon client, or a text editor designed with screen readers in mind such as SonarPad, as an example, because they said, the interface is 1000 times cleaner, there’s a lot of keyboard shortcuts, and I never have to put up with animation nonsense. Get ready. Angry Sightless Scribbles post incoming. Yesterday a fucking Tech Bro just came into an independent bookstore, where everybody was happily reading, drinking hot chocolate or tea, and this dick hole just decided to come in to try to promote his stupid shitty AR but he called it an AI glasses where it would attempt to use AI to generate images of things you were reading, as if the imagination is a stupid thing that needs to be disrupted. I couldn’t take the shit. I have to deal with these morons everywhere in my online life, and I sure as shit did not want them in my offline life too but the fucker would not leave. I stood up, slammed my cane on the floor so that it made a very loud, crack! I began by saying, shut the fuck up. That’s when the technological and intellectual beat down happened. I can’t express how much I hate these people. He just saw a bookstore and decided to just invade our fucking sanctuary, and he really, really, hated it that a person he saw as a Luddite, his version of a Luddite anyway, knew the tech and new the operating system he was using better than he did. I can’t stand these fucking people. On the bright side, the bookstore owner said I could write in there for free anytime, any day, and I get free hot chocolate for life because that verbal beat down was golden. People need to look at what Massachusetts did back in 2023, they raised taxes by 2 percent on people making 1 million dollars or more. And the residents of the state voted on it. They have been reaping 3 billion dollars a year ever since just from this alone. And guess what? There wasn't this mass exodus of rich people from the state.

If you buy from Audible, make sure you download and get rid of the Audible DRM on your purchased audio files. A strange bug has been happening to me. I purchased audiobooks with cash, and these are favorite authors, so I knew I wanted to buy them. I never returned them. But today, Audible is acting as if I never bought them. Same! I’ve been trying for months now to get everybody to get a blog. They’re angry because I don’t read their posts. I mentioned that I don’t go on there very much. They are utterly baffled. When I tell them that I read a lot of blogs now rather than Facebook that’s when I received the numerous comments, but blogging is dead! There is one account that I really love over there but she utterly refuses to get a blog and I don’t understand why. The page is Diary of a Mom. She writes these educational and wonderful post about advocating for her autistic daughter. Every single time I comment, you really should get a blog. You would get a larger audience. Absolutely no reply, no reply whatsoever. Not even an acknowledgment. And yet she’s constantly frustrated with the algorithm over there so shrug. The indieweb is fantastic but I want more! More than tech blogs, you know?

The most infuriating thing to me is when a marketing executive, that has never used a screen reader a day in their life, fights me back on a comprehensive accessibility report they asked me to do. I provided logs. I provided video. I provided version numbers for everything. and they fight me and say we can’t reproduce anything in the video. Could you send over a screenshot of the NVDA settings you have, and also, have you tried tabbing? What version of NVDA are you using, as if they are the expert and I am not. A bit of a nerdy trick. I dunno what CMS/website thing you use, but the easiest way to link to something internal is just remove all the prefixes, like instead of having the link be https://website.com/books, make the URL part just "/books" so that way if you change the URL in the future, everything will just go to that new place without you having to change every instance of website.com. I dunno if you can do this with Wordpress though, in the navigation bar, but if you have internal text as links and you wanna link something internal use that trick. @npub1faz…vc22 @npub1s6k…39lr

I'm not the best person to ask because everything is done via a mailing list and a cloud drive folder. I make everyone tag themselves with something such as PR or ARC etc and then I send a folder link to everyone with multiple formats and just delete the folder on publication day, so not the best system, but NetGally just seemed to be overly complicated for wanting to get reviews. I was like, even if they don't review me, if they give my DRM free Epub or whatever to someone, fantastic! If it's via a publisher, even an indie publisher, I direct everyone to the publisher but I am gonna check out that link soon. I would say yeah, simply because I know several people that want to be able to follow mastodon people on Peertube and if they can’t, then honestly, what’s the point of the interconnected talking point of the Fediverse? Many will then make the leap too, well then, if that’s the case, then how is any of this different than YouTube or Instagram. I know in my case, I don’t want to have 1 trillion accounts for the many different kinds of services. One other thing I absolutely hate about generative SLOP now is that every single time I search for something I have to mentally prepare myself to have my time wasted by SLOP. I also hate the fact that I idly wonder when I hear music or see a video and go, hmm, this sounds like SLOP and then discover it is SLOP. I miss the days when the internet would make fun of amateur artists and talk about how bad something was made. This, SLOP, generated SLOP, it's beyond bad. It's just, nothing. It's nothing worth dunking on in an epic 3 hour takedown video or whatever. It's not even worth emotional energy of hating the generated thing. I miss the days when I'd get annoyed because something was dunked on because the creator, etc, made an unpopular thing. At least that had a better direction towards the anger, etc. SLOP is just... I loved this! I don't think people know the difference between work and a job. People work all the time, from volunteering to doing mutual aid and other things to better their communities, but I’d even wouldn't call that work. As someone that's fully #AntiWork people are just mad because people would rather dedicate their time and skills to helping their communities and neighbors, rather than making someone else money. Also, while we're at it, people aren't lazy. Any time! And really, it is more than possible for creatives to make money here. This is uncooth of me, but I am starting to believe people that immediately want this place to be like other microblogging platforms don't know how to see people as people, mainly just tools and things like that. I take extensive social media breaks. The Fediverse has helped me in so many ways. Someone donated to my website hosting costs that makes sure I'll be online long after my passing. It's possible, and I honestly, frankly, don't understand why it's so hard for other people to learn the culture. People know I'm not a bot so when I take my breaks, someone will let someone else know, etc. But I can't just get behind a feature designed to point at others instead of building community makes a platform better for other users, regardless of marginalization. Many have explained it to me and absolutely none have convinced me, not a single person, so maybe there's a reason for that not convincing everyone because I consider myself to be a very understanding person. Not about this. No one has convinced me quote posts are worth having. No one.

It is my forever belief that all the people that hate email have zero clue on how to use email. For instance, for me? I stopped subscribing to newsletters and moved everything to RSS feeds.
I now use email strictly for communication. I move things into folders based on what kind of email it is. if I wanna keep something in the message, I copy it to a plain text file, with a note at the top when I got the email, who the sender was, and more. I copy full signatures when I want to save an email to a text file because then I'll never have to remember contact information again.
Lastly, I stopped reading email in HTML view. It's all plain text for me. No crap tables anymore, no nothing.

Maybe I don't quite hate it all, but I do hate talking with managers, marketing people, people not in web development about accessibility issues on websites because, usually, the conversations always go something like this.
Me. This complaint checks out. You need to do this and that and this to make it accessible.
Manager. But why isn't our accessible AI tool working?
Me. Because AI doesn’t understand your website and it won’t work anyway if someone is on a shit connection and the javascript won’t load.
Marketer. But then maybe the person needs to upgrade their internet.
Manager. Maybe the screen reader’s broken. Have they added AI to screen readers yet? That will fix everything. why doesn’t NVDA have AI yet? If NVDA had AI, we wouldn't need to worry about this.
Marketer. Did you try tabbing? I noticed you weren't tabbing at all, did you try that?
Me, internally. That's fucking it! You all deserve to be sued.
Today was the first day I thought about turning to the accessibility dark side and actually just becoming a plaintif in all these ADA lawsuits, because this level of, our website isn't the problem, when it clearly is, is getting on my last fucking nerves.
It's always managers and marketing people that are the first to ask, well, why doesn’t JAWS have AI yet? Why doesn’t NVDA just compensate for our shit web design?
Oh don't get me wrong, developers and I have had our share of, why do I need to use HTML? That's so 1980! Battles. You know, HTML can label a button, you don't need to use ARIA for that. Developer. But ARIA is richer! HTML is boomer technology!
Me, screaming internally. I hate you all!
But I'm getting more and more of these kinds of clients and so, like, I can fully understand why you'd join these law firms as a plaintiff and just going to town with demand letters and such, because this shit is maddening!
The best accessibility conversations I've had have been with developers. Not all the time, but more than not, they get it more than the dipshits in marketing and management.
My other alternative is I think everyone in marketing needs to take a mandatory web development class, and pass, and have a certificate.

I’m helping someone with a résumé platform and I don’t know how you all do job hunting today because this is an absolute nightmare. The particular portal wants the user to upload a resume but then the portal is absolute trash at extracting from the résumé and synthesizing from the résumé so the portal wants the user to type in everything manually. the portal doesn’t even accept markdown or plain text resumes. Only PDF. This kind of nonsense makes me even more #AntiWork my friend is just applying for a job, not to interview the President of the USA. This is absolutely ridiculous, and people genuinely do think that corporate jobs are actually important and instead of a means for survival. If I ever go back into the workforce again, my interview answers will be the most honest anybody’s ever heard. This is what I do and it actually works wonders for me. I think the chopping up and posting is automated though? But you’ve touched on another reason why I just don’t read threads on here very often. If there’s a thread with like five or six post? I simply won’t read it. Give me a blog post with a three hour estimated reading time and day of the week though and I will sit down and read that whole post in one go!

Finally have some free time to start moving away from a Gmail email address. Can anybody recommend a fully hosted email service provider?

Something like Fastmail, with the ability for aliases, and a clean, HTML, designed interface that isn't trying to be an app in a browser? But the ability to view messages as plain text.
I'd use Fastmail but they don't work with my VOIP mobile numbers and constantly engage in union busting so want something else.
