i spent a long time building an LLM tool for my wife that uses RAG to provide answers to certain specific legal questions. it was fun, it seemed to work! then i was reading /r/LLMDevs and it turns out models frequently just ignore the context you give them with RAG and answer from their training data, so you have to add elaborate checks to verify that they are actually using the context in their answers. 🙃 like, what are we even doing here.

another thing i enjoy is watching people negotiate with their kids. again, if you drive everywhere, you can just physically grab your kid, throw them in the car, and go. if you are walking, kids frequently say "i don't want to walk" or "i want to walk this other direction" or "look at this interesting leaf" and parents have to stop and negotiate the walking process. imo it creates healthier relationships.

and the best part is, my credit card got locked/replaced because someone's payment system made a $0 charge to it. did i recognize it? no. was it fraud? maybe! or maybe one of the dumbass companies out of the literally thousands that have my credit card information decided to push a vibe-coded update to their payment transaction system that just pings all the credit cards they have on file for no reason. fucking awesome.

so fucking angry. just got off the phone with my credit card's fraud department where they asked me to confirm my identity by **reading back the security code they send me by SMS** i was fucking furious. i just said "no, i'm not going to do that, every single anti-phishing training i have ever taken says not to forward security codes to anyone." guy said "fine" and confirmed with a message to my app instead. but holy shit, what a disaster.

as foretold by basically every critic of self-driving cars. and this is the case for all machine learning technologies. they can only do 90% of the work and expect the human expert to take over for the complicated bits, but after so long depending on a machine, the human is no longer an expert.

we were re-watching Stranger Things and my kid commented on the poor quality of the flashlights as maybe a way to ramp up the drama and i had to point out that no, serious, flashlights were **fucking terrible** in the 1980s, if anything the show **overstates** the effectiveness of flashlights back then, they **fucking sucked** kids who grew up in an LED world have **no** idea how bad we used to have it for flashlights.
