# be-BOP and the Blues
Do you know the connection between be-BOP and the blues?
Sure — bebop is a genre that came out of swing jazz, a cousin of the blues. But that's not all of it.
"Blues Boy" B.B. King, one of the three "Kings" of the blues, had a manager (Sidney A. Seidenberg) to handle his contracts. But to stay focused on his music and take care of the other practical aspects of his life and his tours, B.B. King already had a Bebop, back in 1951. Seventy-two years before we launched our project, Willis Edwards Jr. was running the entire logistics of the King's life. Thanks to him, the King could focus on his music. Everyone called him Bebop.

They say that a writer always puts a little of themselves into what they write. In a past life, I wrote books, and I still work in IT. Those two lives qualified me — but I have a third one that takes up most of my days: music. And I poured a great deal of that passion into be-BOP.
When I designed be-BOP on the basis of the brief Lionel handed me in early 2023, I already had a vision in mind — one that stuck very tightly to music.
Between 2016, 2017, and 2018, in between freelance IT contracts mostly in e-commerce, I spent nearly six months in Louisiana and Mississippi, doing historical and visual research to write a fiction universe weaving together blues, voodoo, and Prohibition. I mainly spent time in three towns: New Orleans and Lafayette in Louisiana, and Clarksdale, Mississippi.
Clarksdale — a modest town of about 15,000 souls, founded in 1848 — is known in folklore as the place where Robert Johnson supposedly sold his soul to the devil at a crossroads in exchange for the gift of music. Historically, Clarksdale has lived through the collapse of its cotton industry, a tragic episode of the Red Summer of 1919, a visit from another "King" (Martin Luther, in 1958 and again in 1962), and above all the birth or passage of countless bluesmen — from Son House to John Lee Hooker, by way of Muddy Waters, Charley Patton, and "Big" Jack Johnson. At the Delta Blues Museum in Clarksdale, just a stone's throw from the Ground Zero Blues Club (co-owned by actor Morgan Freeman), you could occasionally find "Lucille" on display — one of the legendary guitars of Indianola's prodigal son.
And recently, you may have heard of Clarksdale — or even caught a glimpse of its surroundings: several scenes from the 2025 film *Sinners*, directed by Ryan Coogler, were shot there.
In 2017, I met some of the staff at "Visit Clarksdale," the local tourism office, along with someone from city hall. They confided in me about the town's challenges: orphaned by its industry, it was surviving mostly thanks to music tourism — a true economic lung that drew most of its oxygen from the Juke Joint Festival, held every April, which mobilizes the entire town.
In fact — not content with having my book *Tales of the Deep South* (written in French) find a home at the Delta Blues Museum — I was even invited in 2020 and 2021 to host a stand there. A childhood dream I never knew I had.
Was it good? No idea. Two weeks before I was due to leave, a tiny little virus from Asia paralyzed the entire planet… Goddamn covid. But still.
What had stuck with me about Clarksdale was:
- the Ground Zero Blues Club, a true musical Mecca with bands paid by passing the hat
- the timid presence of credit cards — and, when actually deployed in a shop (like at the Delta Blues Museum), the connection issues
- those bars where artists' paintings were for sale right next to their blues albums
- the Shack Up Inn, with its old grain silos converted into B&B rooms, plus a bar, concerts, and music workshops
- those strange ATMs with the orange B logo from LibertyX and CoinMe scattered here and there
- musicians like Watermelon Slim, who'd play the Ground Zero Blues Club or Red's one night and the Bluesberry Café — a bed-and-breakfast/café/bar/concert venue — the next

Watermelon Slim — Bill Homans in everyday life — is quite a story: Vietnam veteran, conscientious objector, truck driver, occasional collaborator with John Lee Hooker, Robert Cray, even Henry Vestine (guitarist of Canned Heat). The "working-class singer," as he was nicknamed, narrowly escaped a heart attack in 2002. He decided to dedicate the rest of his life to his music, in Clarksdale, after decades of wearing two — sometimes three — hats, juggling music with day jobs to make ends meet.
Watermelon Slim shone mostly locally at first, but eventually broke through across North America, racking up awards and nominations. And then one day, the improbable: thanks to a visitor passing through Clarksdale, his music crossed the Atlantic. He played Paris, he played London — even though Europe had refused him a solo career back in the '90s. He is now a recognized international artist.

Over a bottle of cognac in Clarksdale, he confided in me his outrage at the laughable royalties paid by Spotify, and at the obscene margins taken by online concert ticket services.
Something was clicking in my head back then. The gears were turning hard. Today, I see it more clearly.

- local artists known all over the world, because the people lucky enough to see them live only needed a bit more visibility to send them international
In fact, when Lionel laid out the foundations of be-BOP for me, that's what I had in mind: Clarksdale. Clarksdale, citadel of music, carried by a federated be-BOP run by the city. Every musician with their own web storefront, every band with their own shop to sell without middlemen, every hotel and every restaurant with its own POS — all of them able to offer online slot bookings or event tickets independently, without ever having to switch tools.

It was a beautiful vision.
be-BOP exists today, and does all of that — or close to it (we're still working on the Federation piece) — but it's not in Clarksdale yet. Local culture is like free software and open source: it pays badly. In the end, it may be in Tahiti or in Goma rather than Mississippi that be-BOP grows up.
But still, still… what a vision, what a dream.

Mais pour se concentrer sur sa musique et gérer d'autres aspects pratiques de sa vie et de ses tournées, B.B. King avait déjà un Bebop en 1951.
72 ans avant le lancement de notre projet, Willis Edwards Jr. s'occupait de toute la logistique de la vie du King.
Grâce à lui, le King se concentrait sur sa musique.

Quand j'ai conçu be-BOP sur la base du cahier des charges qui m'a été donné par Lionel en début 2023, j'avais déjà une vision en tête, avec une adhérence très forte à la musique.
Entre 2016, 2017 et 2018, entre plusieurs contrats de freelance informatique principalement dans le e-commerce, j'ai passé pratiquement 6 mois en Louisiane et au Mississippi, dans le cadre de recherches historiques et visuelles pour écrire un univers de fiction mêlant le Blues, le vaudou et la Prohibition.
J'ai principalement fréquenté 3 villes : La Nouvelle-Orléans et Lafayette en Louisiane, et Clarksdale, au Mississippi.
Clarksdale, modeste ville d'à peu près 15000 âmes, fondée en 1848, est connue dans le folklore pour être la ville où Robert Johnson aurait vendu son âme au diable à un carrefour pour apprendre la musique.

Dans le Delta Blues Museum de Clarksdale, tout proche du Ground Zero Blues Club (co-géré par l'acteur Morgan Freeman), on pouvait y trouver de passage "Lucille", l'une des guitares mythiques du fils prodigue d'Indianola.
Et, récemment, vous en avez peut-être entendu parler, de Clarksdale, voire, vous avez aperçu son voisinage : c'est là qu'ont été tournées plusieurs scènes du film "Sinners", réalisé par Ryan Coogler et sorti en 2025.

- ces bars où les tableaux d'artistes étaient à vendre aux côtés de leurs albums de blues
- le Shack Up Inn avec ses anciens silos à grain rénovés en bnb avec également son bar, ses concerts et ses ateliers musicaux
- ces étranges ATM à B orange de LibertyX et CoinMe ici et là
- ces musiciens comme Watermelon Slim, qui passait un jour au Ground Zero Blues Club ou au Reds et le jour d'après au Bluesberry Café, un bed'n'breakfast café bar concert

Watermelon Slim, ou Bill Homans dans le civil, c'est tout un parcours, vétéran du Vietnam, objecteur de conscience, chauffeur routier, partenaire ponctuel de John Lee Hooker, de Robert Cray ou même d'Henry Vestine (guitariste de Canned Heat).
Le "chanteur ouvrier", tel qu'on le surnommait, échappe de peu à une crise cardiaque en 2002. Il décide de dédier le reste de sa vie à sa musique, à Clarksdale, après des décennie de double, voire triple-casquette, à cumuler la musique avec ses emplois alimentaires.
Watermelon Slim rayonne surtout localement, mais finit par percer en Amérique du Nord et enchaîne les awards et les nominations. Et un jour, l'improbable : au gré d'un visiteur à Clarksdale, la musique de Watermelon Slim traverse l'Atlantique, il joue à Paris, à Londres, alors que l'Europe lui avait refusé sa carrière solo dans les années 90. C'est désormais un artiste international reconnu.

Autour d'une bouteille de cognac, à Clarksdale, il me confiait son offuscation face aux royalties ridicules payées par Shopify et les marges indécentes de services de vente de places de concert en ligne.
Quelque chose se connectait dans ma tête à l'époque, ça cogitait sévère.
Aujourd'hui, j'y vois mieux.
Clarksdale, c'est :
- du tips
- du pay-what-you-want
- des places de concert
- de la vente de musique
- des tickets d'événements
- de la réservation de créneau (pour les cours de musique)
- de la réservation de nuitée
- des boîtes à chaussures regroupant le cash des tips, des consommations du bar et des ventes d'album
- des collectes de dons pour les organismes tentant de faire le maintien et la promotion de la culture en ville, comme le Clarksdale Culture Capital (pour l'anecdote, c'est grâce à eux que Sinners a pu être diffusé à Clarksdale après y avoir été tourné, événement spécial car Clarksdale n'avait... pas de cinéma)
- des artistes locaux connus partout dans le monde car ceux qui ont eu la chance de les voir sur place et qui n'ont besoin qu'un peu plus de visibilité pour exploser à l'international
En fait, quand Lionel m'a présenté les fondations de be-BOP, c'est ça que j'ai eu en tête : Clarksdale.
Clarksdale, citadelle de la musique, portée par un be-BOP fédératif géré par la ville.
Chaque musicien a sa vitrine web, chaque groupe a son shop pour vendre sans intermédiaire, chaque hôtel et chaque restaurant a sa caisse, tout en pouvant proposer des réservations de créneau en ligne ou des tickets d'événement de manière autonome sans avoir à changer d'outil.

C'était une belle vision.
be-BOP existe aujourd'hui, et fait tout ça ou pas loin (on bosse encore sur la partie Fédération), mais n'est pas encore à Clarksdale.
La culture locale, c'est comme le libre et l'open-source : ça paie mal.
Au final, c'est peut-être plus à Tahiti ou à Goma qu'au Mississippi que be-BOP grandira.
Mais quand même, quand même... quelle vision, quel rêve.
B.B. King avait donc son Bebop, 70 ans avant nous.

On a fait mieux entretemps, sans scanner ni caméra 🥸
Le client doit scanner la npub du nostr-bot du marchant via la borne, renseigner un OTP via DM, et il reçoit son reçu en DM.
Ca ne rend pas l'UX de Nostr plus simple, mais ça fluidifie un peu, et ça retire un besoin hardware.

(A "bit" of FOSS builder introspection : taking a look back and sharing is fueling me with positive energy, making health issues taking their leave for a bit.)
Our project, @npub16l9…u4ha is going a bit slower for a moment, as we had to accept a more classical IT job, partial time, to make up for the lack of funds (FOSS, no tracking, no service, you know the drill, it's not what VCs want).
Still, I'm really glad of our last months job, even last weeks :
- we improved the nostr-bot behavior, and the whole nostr implementation on be-BOP (you can know have a full smpt-free eshop, npub only)
- we implemented on-chain nodeless payment with no address reuse (be-BOP makes its own ZPUB derivation to generate a unique on-chain payment address and will check the transaction's confirmations on any mempool, public or private, you setted in the UI), allowing to have a full-nodeless self-custodial eshop on both on-chain and lightning (with previous Phoenix Server integration), making it works on 4.20€ VPS
- we implemented the (optional and modular) agewall for regulated activities
- we improved peerfunding challenge gauge (self-hosted, crowdfunding-like features), making some fix and adding some useful monitoring tools for owners
- products can now have variations (like colors and size for a tee), and with impact on price (we're working on the same thing for stock, for each product variation, that'll open to AirBnB-like booking in the end)
- while introducting SEO optimizations, we also implemented a "SEO Cloack" option, to say "hell no" to SEO crawler bots and stay in the shadows (sadly crawlers listen less and less to this, but... 🤷‍♂️)
- for hybrids BTC/fiat shops (to make adoption easier), after Sum Up, Cash and Bank Transfer, we introduced Paypal, and Stripe (allowing to enable Apple Pay, GiroPay, iDeal, SoFort, AliPay, Twint and more, a lot of specific payments that are nearly mandatory in some countries)
- while it's not finished, we still made progress of the Point of Sale touchscreen for restaurant waiter/waitress, allowing to use be-BOP on a phone or tablet to easily take orders on tables
- we added italian, spanish (El Salvador specific) and dutch langages support
- we improved back-office experience with order labeling, sales reporting, nomad Point of Sale on international (with seller IP overwrite)
- the docker-compose, initially made for dev, it now working on production, allowing to host be-BOP (e-shop), a S3 Object Storage (Minio) and a MongoDB on the same VPS, to be fully self-hosted
- and thanks to our last PoC (not on Github yes, still local), we can go from a naked debian 12 to an open be-BOP with a free dynv6 domain, SSL certificate, running Phoenix Server, interface to fill your ZPub, allowing you to install and up your be-BOP, publish your first product and cash-in online in Lightning or on-chain in a self-custodial way in less than 15 minutes, without technical skill (except connecting through SSH and pasting a curl command).
New pilots are spawning here and here, BTC meet-up in France, new shops in Democratic Republic of Congo through, some other are coming really soon, and local team are checking for deploying be-BOP in Senegal and other countries.
While my teammates made presentation of be-BOP at Plan-B (Lugano, CH) these last few days, I'll be at B-Only (Annecy, FR), then Adopting Bitcoin for workshops (San Salvador, SV), then CryptoXR (Auxerre, FR).
Lot said we were crazy to try to build a FOSS end-to-end solution from scratch (not based on Prestashop, Wordpress, BTCPayServer & co), pluginless (full standalone, nop paywall), managing the sales (online and retail point of sale IRL), the website, the legal and accounting compliance while introducing Nostr, having privacy in mind, respecting users data and having a password-less for customer policy, while providing way of working with your node natively, or working nodeless without custodial third-party.
This, especially with an daily operational team of 3 (1 dev, 1 tech lead, 1 CPO / QA), for the pure IT focus (Lionel, Léo, I don't forget you 🤜🤛).
It's been 21 months, it works better and better, it does more and more, number of people using it or planning to use it is growing, and now people are making it theirs and deploy it for others in their neighborhood.
Sky is not the limit (money and time are), but I can't wait to see how far we can go, despite the odds.
Let's go back to work, and thanks again to friends, supports, alpha users, beta pilots, curious, enthusiasts, and even to critics and haters !

Ok, so, @npub16zl…evpc, @npub1ren…aw97, do you know how to disable automatic translation in Amethyst android client ? While it seems to be one of the best Android Nostr client to me, we tried to check with Theorygon, now he 's romanian, auto-translate fucks off my nostr-bot on be-BOP by translating every !command on our live demo @npub16l9…u4ha for Lugano (I won't be there, but team will be), and I didn't find a thing on the app to disable that.

Today was supposed to be a day of joy for these two reasons, but I wasn't able to process it correctly.
I usually doesn't talk that much about disabilities (physical or mental ones), but both are fresh to me, I kept for myself, I kept for myself, and.... suddenly, the breakdown. "La panne". End of the (public) line.
Speaking about disabilities, weaknesses and lack of social skills or social appareance can be a no go or become a definitive pitfall, and it's really infuriating go through this kind of seemingly wtf, inappropriate and unexpected crisis (not being able to talk about lovely things, really ?).
But, it's like that. That's a new thing for me, it's weird, it's strange, it's unexpected, it's sometime random, it's fresh (more than 30 years without this, and now it's my daily basis), but it's like this now.
I'm happy to be able to take some height about these issues, talk about them, take a step back and put the situation into perspective through the news :
- Louisiana was huge for me
- Working in Bitcoin ecosystem was huge for me
- Today's the 6th birthday of my book about Louisiana
- Louisiana took as a state a huge step in Bitcoin adoption & safekeeping
- I'm happy about everything
While I'm frustrated because I'm not being able to express myself properly about the whole thing (or at least "as good as I expected"), at least, I'm happy about these facts, and, in the timeline, they make me think about myself, my evolution and changes, for the best or the worse.
So :
- Happy 6th birthday for my book about Louisiana, "Tales of the Deep South"
- Cheer it for being orderable through BTC on-chain, Lightning & fiat ( https://pvh-editions.com/product/tales-of-the-deep-south )
- GG to Louisiana to keep on this way, after their House Bill 488 and House Resolution No 33
- I'm sad to have some kind of "mental strokes" during these kinds of events, I'm tired of having them, but I'll always have them, and it's good to be able to talk publicly about it
On good events and harsh trial, it became two sidequests : one for the retrospective meaning of these events and how it counts for me, and another for what I lack, what I long, and how much I kept it for mysel, for way too long.
And, so, in the end, HDB "Tales of the Deep South", lots of good memories for me, GG Louisiana for BTC (geaux geaux crypteaux), and I'm kinda glad I was able to bring back some humanity and honesty on my online avatar.
That being said, as everyone, Satoshi Nakatomo probably loved gumbo. Who doesn't ?

So, two weeks ago, Michel "Ketominer" from nodl_it told me "You're not at #BH2024 ? Too bad, I would have been able to introduce your to some people for @npub16l9…u4ha". Socially and physically, I was in deep red, I don't planned to go, and I was supposed to babysit my son.

One insomnia and few days later, thanks to my ex-wife's understanding, I finally was in Riga, and went to my first Nostr event, for #Nostriga , all alone (people I know from France and Switzerland arrived only on friday).

The whole event (Nostriga, Baltic Honey Badger, BTCPayDay) was great, with a lost of meetings, discussions and laughs, but Nostriga was definitely something special for me.
The Nostr users & tech community is old enough to have self-criticism, discuss on PoC & scalability feedbacks, but is also young enough to have "everything to build" with this new protocol, with a lot of enthusiasm, effervescence and ingeniosity.
People were like "Oh, hey, how's doing, how comes you're here, are you building something with Nostr ?", and just with that, we talked, we talked, we talked, I met so many people from all around the world.
While I've experienced some Bitcoin event previously, at Nostriga, I was like jumping from my home watertank to the ocean, with exciting discussions, open-minded & friendly people, top-notch technicians, freedom-enthusiasms, fighters for a no-censorship and privacy-respectful world, and more.
Without tagging them, while it was really fun to meet familiar face so far from home (Polto, Darko, Michel, Max, Olga, Harry, Leo, Rolland, Lucas, Yves, Copin & more), I felt really lucky to meet people like Joel, Josh, Bayer, to be introduced to people like Abubakar or Odell, and even be able to make a be-BOP demo to Derek Ross (he was so kind, so nice, so accessible, it still feels unreal).
Clearly, this week will keep a special place in my memories, and while scheduling B-Only Annecy and Adopting Bitcoin El Salvador, I'm pretty sure that, next time, I'll be on Nostriga again.
