@nprofile…wfat Sure we can always nitpick but the overview is nice IMO.
Heck, I can even nitpick on your nitpicking post, for instance when you write “In Nix packages are values”: Nix doesn’t let you define disjoint types, so there’s no “package” type, which is the point here.
This, in turn, has a real impact on the kind of interface that is built. (Eelco Dolstra discussed this at length in their Guix Days talk a few years ago!)

@nprofile…cwvs I do think we should eventually work to simplify this, for instance by adding the option during installation to pull in a channel that provides non-free firmware (but without other non-free software packages, similar to how Debian does).
We’d need to find consensus, but the first steps are technical: splitting Nonguix in two parts (firmware vs. the rest) and providing a Linux-libre variant that can actually load that firmware.

The outcome of GCD 008 might be withdrawal, or it might be something more focused (for example, I think one cannot reasonably ignore the legal implications, regardless of one’s “philosophical” stance.)

The good thing is that this finally led me to create a Guix System image to work on it, and it went well!
I wrote a derivative of the A20-OLinuXino-Lime2 image type already in Guix proper:

I have an Olimex A20-OLinuXino-Micro (ca. 2017) whose primary purpose is to run PulseAudio with an RTP source that I can send to from my laptop to play music (it’s connected to a tuner-amp from the 80’s—youngsters have no idea what I’m talking about :-)).
Thing is, during FOSDEM, there was a power outage and it never came back. It was running an old Debian with Guix atop (so I blamed systemd for that, without evidence).

@nprofile…56x8 It’s not glibc (it’s a graft, so only glibc itself gets rebuilt): it’s mostly the ‘gnome-team’ and ‘python-team’ branches that had been accumulating world rebuilds that were no longer relevant.
I cleaned that up and we’re back to “only” 60k pending builds. :-)

I think we need solidarity. We need to recognize the harms of genAI, including from a free software standpoint.
And we need bigger projects to show the way: to clearly state their rejection, and not on the grounds of quality assurance—a concern bound to become irrelevant—but really on the grounds of ethics, refusing to be part of harm this does to society.

I can relate to the pipe dream kind of free software project—the kind that would require too many person-years but could make such a difference.
But I cannot relate to this process of telling a machine what to produce, crafting checks so it will keep trying until it succeeds. That feels too remote from what I enjoy about hacking and from what I like to share.

It was nice to have a sequence of talks from Guix, Spack, and EESSI developers: there are differences in these approaches but also common ground.
That led to interesting discussions in the hallway!
