Wind sure, but solar belongs on roof tops and over parking lots. It should also be locally owned. Converting golf courses to community gardens would be a better use of the urban land, I think. Utility scale solar should be banned.

One of my colleagues at the art supply / frame shop I work at, her boyfriend is Haida (an indigenous person of the Pacific Northwest Coast of North America). I love Haida & Tlingit art! So before I retire next week I paid him for a print of this Orca. Today I printed it out & framed it. I'm very happy with how it turned out! Of note, he (Alex) is a very talented painter. I saw the original & his brush technique is spectacularly smooth, like it was printed.(Phone photo.)

Nevada Northern Railway, Ely, Nevada (4/26/2025). These old engines were used to haul copper ore from the Ruth Mine on the west side of Ely to smelters in McGill, northeast of Ely. The trains, railway, & machine shop are fully operational & appear to the visitor as frozen in time from the early 20th century. I stop there every time I pass through town. Visitors can ride trains & be the engineer, but I prefer to roam around the yard & machine shop.

I love this old gas station. It makes me dream of the day when all gas stations look like this!
(I also like it because I have often romanticized about owning that cliche gas station on a lonely desert road in the middle of nowhere. You've seen it in the movies, the gas station with the old guy in a rocking chair, the '50s style Coke machine, and the big dog you have to step over to go inside.)

Oh, interesting. I forget the name of the flower, it is a big ball of tiny flowers, but whenever I had a bunch of iron (steel) chips from turning metal on my lathe, I would toss the chips on the soil under that plant and the big pink / white balls would turn a bright blue!

I read that an animated film titled "Flow," about "a cat, dog, capybara, secretarybird, & ring-tailed lemur, in a...post-human world, trying to survive as the water level dramatically rises around them," just won an Academy Award for Best Animated Feature. The film holds a 97% fresh rating at Rotten Tomatoes. The animation was done using the free & open-source software @npub1k5u…hg3t. It warmed up today so I ran a few errands on my motorcycle. Everybody I saw, young & old, had their faces smashed into their phones--people walking in parking lots, employees working in stores--it was creepy. My favorite tree species, Pinus longaeva (Great Basin bristlecone pine). This tree could be 1,000-3,000yrs old. In California's White Mountains, at over 3,000 meters (10,000ft) elevation, a Pinus longaeva has been found to be over 5,000yrs old! The trees grow on light colored dolomite limestone, the remains of an ancient sea. Pinus longaeva wood is so hard it never rots, rather, it erodes.

Holy hell--what the actual fuck. I need a replacement toilet bowl for a thirty-year-old American Standard toilet. "Standard" is a fucking joke. They have at least fifty different models & not a fucking thing is "standard." So now I need to buy a whole new toilet, tank & bowl, & there are hundreds & hundreds of models across at least thirty brands. What the actual fuck‽ ‽ ‽ I mean, it's a bowl to shit in. I think I'm liking my new method for enhancing very weathered petroglyphs. I'm using the combination drawn and parametric masks in a second Darktable exposure module instance. First I paint in where I want the mask. Then I adjust it using the parametric functions. Then I lighten the faded petoglyphs. What do you think? Does this image look too manipulated or does it look fairly natural?

Yes, sometimes I do go to those iconic western locations & make photographs, like a million others before me. When I get home I transfer them to my desktop & there they sit. What can I do to make them unique & different for all of the others? I don't think I've looked at these until now. Ya, a fixed price is good. You should also have a contact, like 20 years, and, as I said earlier, a must take provision. By definition, a properly designed FIT is wholesale energy. Your generation should be on the wholesale side of the meter, that way, like in the US with net-metering, the capacity of your facility isn't tied to the size of your load. With a properly designed FIT you are able to build your system as large as you want, greening the energy for everyone on the grid.

Hm, that's unfortunate. I've not covered the energy space in years. If you indeed have an actual feed in tariff where you are, it should have been designed with a "must take" provision for the utility. In other words, they have to take all of the feed in tariff contracted renewables first & at whatever the original contact price per kWh was. Are you actually on the wholesale side of the meter or are you doing something more like energy net-metering, which is what it sounds more like to me

Nice! But I don't understand "back to the grid." If you generated the energy, isn't it yours to "send to the grid"?
The utilities have us so manipulated that we use euphemisms like back to the grid. They don't want us to think we could be generators selling energy to them. Which is the only way we'll ever get to 100%+ renewable energies & is why we'll never get there. They won't let their customers play in their sandbox. My apologies, that word "back" always sets me off.

In the past I've briefly looked at Signal for a messaging alternative. Because I've been seeing people talk a lot about Signal again recently, I looked again. It appears, as it did the last time I looked, that you can't receive or send messages to users outside of Signal, is that correct? If so, what is a good alternative to Google's messenger? I'm not too concerned about security, but am interested in using software developed & maintained outside of the US.

Nice! A framer at work! Is that you? It's always nice to print your photos. Nothing like a physical copy in hand! I frame two days a week at an independent art store here in Reno. It is a fun semi-retired job. And I get to use their large format printers and get an employee discount!

Indeed. And people flooding over to Bluesky aren't looking behind the curtains. It's primarily funded by crypto-bros. Once they have a large entrenched audience you can bet it will quickly go the way of the dead bird site.
