The norms of the Web has been "public" since the 1990s.
But, in addition to that, ActivityPub has a special markup that authors can use if they want to further say their message is public. (See the text in the screen-shot or follow the link.)

Some people seem to want Mastodon to be Signal.
They'd probably be happier on Signal.
Although, they also want Mastodon to be Signal not just for themselves — but for everyone — even others who don't want Mastodon to be Signal.
And, there also seems to be an unawareness of the norms of practices on the non-Mastodon parts of the Fediverse.

I am a long-time fan of content-addressing. And, I think it is important.
But, I think (in addition to that) we also need to think about social-technologies.
For example, how can we incentivize Fediverse users to save an re-share files, such as video files.

There were platforms from the DC++ and BitTorrent eras that I think did a good job of encouraging this (through the social-technologies they created).

You can trace the history of these techniques back to at least the 1990s.
Broadly speaking, these techniques were use with:
BitTorrent, Private BitTorrent Trackers, and Direct Connect.
I think the Fediverse can and should learn from these techniques, and put them to use.

But, if you are trying to build a community (with many, many users) — a CDN can become expensive. Even very expensive.

PeerTube P2P protocol + HLS

PeerTube uses a P2P protocol with HLS to distribute videos — and to reduce costs for serving videos.
(It is somewhat BitTorrent / WebTorrent like.)
I wonder how often how often P2P downloads tend to happen.
It probably depends on a number of things — but it would be interesting try to understand it better.

For more than a decades I was a meet-up organizer
My biggest meet-ups were machine learning / AI / data science related meet-ups.
I also organized some smaller science meet-ups, too
When my wife got pregnant with our first child, I stopped organizing. Being a parent took priority.
My kids aren't babies anymore. I started organizing again in 2025
FediCon is partially a result of that

I wonder how much Fediverse software would be able to handle an "OrderedCollectionPage" with a "orderedItems" of "Link" IRIs?

From the back-end point-of-view it is easier.
From the front-end point-of-view it is more work.
From a performance point-of-view, network calls can be costly, so perhaps it is better for the back-end to fetch the data (rather than the client).

I’ve had some questions about why a few of my Fediverse related projects are down.
Some of my Fediverse projects were developed just by me. While with others I worked with others — with friends.
Some of those friends live in cities that are having bombs dropped on them right now.
We split up our server management (including the costs). Some I managed and paid for. Some a friend did.
The ones he did are down.

Personally — I would probably have made the distinction this way.
An "Article" has a title.
A "Note" doesn't have a title.
(In ActivityPub / ActivityStreams, a 'title' seems to tend to get represented in the "name" field.)

People use Discord and Slack for different reasons.
If you want to create an alternative — the place to start is NOT E2EE (end to end encryption).
A place to start is understanding all these different types of users and use-cases. And then deciding which of these user types you are making the software for.
Some of them need E2EE, but some do not.

The FLX1s is a privacy oriented phone, that is an open platform, built on open-source software, where I am in control of it.

I switched my phone somewhat recently — from an Android phone to a FLX1s Linux Phone.
I am an early adopter — so there are some rough areas, but —
I am largely happy with the phone.
Especially given that it is a privacy oriented phone, that is an open platform, built on open-source software, where I am in control of it.
One nice thing though — for the apps where there is no Linux alternative, you can run (some) Android apps on it.

Mastodon could become that. But, it would need to add some new features.
Mastodon has "editable posts". Which is great.
But Mastodon doesn't give you a "choice of home-feed algorithm" yet. Currently, Mastodon only support reverse-chron as its home-feed algorithm. (I.e., what some inaccurately call "no algorithm".)
And, Mastodon doesn't yet given users the "ability to moderate replies" to their posts.

This (in the attached screen-shot) is from someone on Twitter who is also on Mastodon and Bluesky.
He seems to be a fan of the nested comments UI on Bluesky.
We have some great applications on the Fediverse. They could be made even greater with this improvement.

More or less, yes.
ActivityPub has what is needed to represent a podcast.
And, there is some Fediverse podcasting applications, such as Castopod.
The issue is really one of user-experience. For example, you need a Fediverse mobile app that presents ActivityPub data as a podcasting experience (rather than, for example, a micro-blogging experience).
It is definitely doable.

Yes, you can (make podcasting work on ActivityPub rather than RSS).
Also, you can think of ActivityPub outboxes as the new RSS / Atom / WebFeed:

Now, I should acknowledge that things on Bluesky are less-worse than they were before, with respect to relays.
I talked to one person who has an AT-Protocol application, that has set up their own relay. (So, that is an improvement.)

So....
Relays aren't inherently "bad".
Relays don't necessarily lead to centralization.
Relays can be useful.
Relays can be desirable.
But, there should be A LOT of relays out there.
And, (in practice) people should be able to create their own relays.
But, there shouldn't be just one relay that everyone uses. That is the problem.

If people developing on Bluesky would either set up their own relay, or choose from a large set of expanding relays, then there wouldn't necessarily be this same centralization problem.
However, that is not what is happening.
In practice, many, many applications have been all using that special Bluesky FIREHOSE relay.
I.e., they are all using this single relay.
That is the problem.
That is one of the things that is making things learn towards centralization on Bluesky.

There are 2 new technologies for search on the Fediverse. One the Mastodon team created. The other I created with some friends.
(I didn't know the Mastodon people were working on it, too.)
But, AFAIK, relays don't support either of these yet.
And also, IMO, there should be (many) "search servers".

Typically, a server would put all the Activities it gets from a relay into its own database. And then, that server would use its own facilities to search the Activities locally (without further involving the relay).

A relay could have a simple algorithm for what it decides to share. Or, a relay could have a complex algorithm for it.
For example, a relay could share anything shared with it. Or, a relay might share everything from a list of users. Or, a relay might share posts with the word "BANANA" in it. Etc etc etc.
But, from the point of view of a server listening to a relay, it isn't aware of what algorithm the relay is using.

It might be different in the U.S., but —
In Canada, there doesn't seem to be "real" competition between the banks. There are 5 big banks.

Search is going to have to work well.
And, a good recommendation-engine for the home-feed — i.e., what many inaccurately call "the algorithm".

No one actually 'owns' an Internet domain-name.
At best, you rent it.
And, if you miss a payment (for whatever reason) it will be taken from you.
There is also a long history of Internet domain-names being seized. There was even a book written about it. Although, it keeps on happening.

I used a custom Internet-domain for a Codeberg Pages (static) website, but am getting an error.
The DNS (CNAME) we set up seems to work fine.
Also, Codeberg Pages seems to successfully redirect from HTTP to HTTPS.
But, when I go to the HTTPS version of the website, I get that error.

I agree.
But, AllYourBases (i.e., the name @npub1e9x…msz2 's panel) was a (short-lived) video podcast (with me) that we posted on the Fediverse.
I have been trying to get @npub1e9x…msz2 to revive the AllYourBases podcast.
