I think I’ve settled on an idea, though it’s a crazy one. I keep all actual packages in a single directory and I setup groups in appropriately named dirs for each thing and symlink the needed packages. To enable slackpkg+ and slpkg support by dirs OR deps. This make sense? 900+ packages to maintain AND 900+ symlinks… what could go wrong? 😬 my wacky ideas going to land me some looney tunes time.

I feel I should remind anyone using my #kde6 repo for #slackware that as it has been for months already, you can install #lxqt with a simple “slackpkg install lxqt” from an installed system, or the kde6 liveslak. It’s already available to you, dear reader. With no additional configuration needed! (Ok— LXQt may require additional setup). 🤡

I worked my entire scheduled work week this week and my old ass is in pain. 🫠 Anyway, don’t seem like too much going on I’ve missed. A little change to sddm which I never pushed to the #kde6 is coming to properly set $HOME so you don’t get a .cache folder in your hdd root any longer. Don’t appear I’ve missed any updates having not touched a PC for days, not too bad.

I have strong feelings toward distros who ship themed desktops and don’t offer a vanilla option. Artix is part of the elite few who ruin DEs with terrible looking themes. It holds itself back from being great by painting all the walls. 😂

yeah for amd64 they have xfce ISOs but they also lack the theme packages from arch for some reason and it looks like dog poo. 😆 But for arm64 they only have a rootfs and setup from there is much more time consuming. Some day when I’ve the time to tinker I’ll have to do an install. I really need to make me some sort of rootfs install kit, so much on arm is just barebones setup for distros.

I was looking at armtix the other day. I want to give it a shot but I’m so lazy when it comes to creating a system from scratch. Some day, I’ll setup an install. That said, I greatly dislike that there’s plenty missing from arch (but maybe it can be overlayed). Some day I’ll look deeper at it. How it treating you so far?

I was thinking I could craft my own mostly immutable liveslak with all these tools on it. Flatpak, gnome and homebrew. Wouldn’t be hard and it’s technically immutable since all OS writes are not perm unless you create a new squashfs module on the live. It could be the hackers delight!

My trusty ol Intel MacBook has been rebuilding llvm/clang for days because of a libxml2 update which borked the #crux 3.8 dev environment, and then I ran out of ssd space saving the built package. 🫠 So after clearing space, I started over. Luckily, I have plenty of toys, but sometimes source based distros make me love #slackware a little more each failure.

I just wonder if anyone is even looking at what they ship. There’s like 4 system monitors, 2 different ways to manage flatpaks, a few permissions apps, can’t they just pick one and roll with it? There’s even a backup app that don’t make sense to include on such a system. Reg Fedora is fine though. I mean it’s still got the D, but it’s as polished as can be these days. Great starter OS. Soon maybe they’ll take over Ubuntu’s spot!

Attempting to install this #bluefin LTS arm64 image. The 3gb download took 30 mins and then before it will even work after install, I need to download 77 flatpaks, which has been going for a considerable amount of time. This is quite a process.

I had been spending so much time worrying about #kde6 on x86-64 I hadn’t realized I’d built the entire arm64 over but left the /etc/kde intact. 🫠 Luckily, I was doing installs and tests and found my mistake before I uploaded the repo. Anyone on #slackwareaarch64 waiting for the #kde6 rebuild… it’s ready and all good, and I’ll be pushing it live tomorrow ahead of the next gear 25.04.0 release which will come this weekend for both platforms. Holding off a bit on restructured arm64 repo as well.

all the branding and different web stuff throws me for a loop. ublue bluefin looks great but they don't offer arm64 (unless I'm blind) so my only option here is to start on silverblue and somehow rebase to bluefin? Can I do that magic? lol Oh and Mom said "We have MacOS at home" 😜

lol I have actually, but I’d never gone deeper than looking at some of the scripts. I don’t know enough about how the Fedora universe works to even try and go deeper. But suse always shoving OBS in my face when I use it, and I thought “hrm… one could use obs maybe” (which I’ve dug around a bit but it seems mighty messy) and who knows how to build this stuff on arm64 — last I read, OBS requires a full amd64 install dedicated to using it, which was nope from me, so I checked out. 😂

yes I agree kde5 is dead. But that still don’t change the fact it’s still what’s actually shipped in Slackware. I don’t want to force the upgrade on unwilling individuals, and at least one nwg repo user contacted me with a wtf so I figure it best to let them decide by keeping it in a unique directory. 32bit however, can go the way of the dodo!

try “slackpkg install-new” Pat recently added openblas and some other packages to Slackware. As for krusader, package may have slipped thru the upload, you should have the *5 packages unless you’ve pruned them. P.S. the mega link I posted over the weekend had all the kde packages, but separated by meta… you may want to grab the archive, it’s easier to work with than the full repo with finding what is where. Also don’t forget slackpkg “file-search” for that missing lib.

I’ve changed my many, separate repos into a singular repo. In the MIRRORPLUS line in slackpkgplus.conf you just need remove the “kde6” from the url. There is also a full rebuild moving /etc/kde to /etc following what Slackware has done. Https://slackware.lngn.net/#news has some more info in my post. Still a work-in-progress move but kde6 has entirely been re-built with changes.

Oh, yes KDE has been rebuilt (I hope you all got that mega link), /etc/kde has been moved, ffmpeg4, flatpak, vlc removed. Please obtain vlc from AlienBob repo instead. flatpak is installable/upgradable from your existing system (or blacklist-able), as is KDE if you're updating in place, AND frameworks 6.13.0 is there. Now I have other updates waiting to be pushed as well. 😂 Happy Monday!

The important takeaway is everyone needs to cleanup the entries for PKGS_PRIORITY REPOPLUS & MIRRORPLUS. You can call the repo whatever you want, I’m going with “slackaroni” locally cuz I’m cheesy like that. “kde6” has moved into plain “kde” so it can blacklist seemlessly with Slackware itself. If you just use nwg-shell and blacklist kde/ in slackpkg you’d never have to worry about all that bloat.

I’d always read about how all the M* Apple Silicon machines barely ever even heat up during use. That has been the complete opposite with this machine so far. Either I have an insane workload or these things aren’t cooling very well. I think it may be a little of both.

what I’m pondering on is other packages that really have no place. Like lots of nwg really belongs outside of nwg itself. And extra stuff like kde-unstable can’t be there either. I’m not sure if an extra/ dir would be treated the same yet. For sure it’s not going live tonight, I’ve only just started the 6.13 frameworks, but hopefully before Sunday is over I can just do it and sink or swim. 🤣

I’m basically just going to move everything into a dir, and rebuild the database for it all. So everything (kde,lxqt,nwg, etc) is all setup just like of it were on a Slackware installer. In theory, it should work exactly the same as slackpkg does now. If I say “slackpkg install nwg” it’ll install the entire nwg dir, etc. it’s basically just eliminating me maintaining over 12 repos, but should operate almost identically. But dupe pkgs may be a problem. Guess we’ll see. Heh

Status Report: #kde6 had multiple issues rebuilding the entire thing. Most is fixed but there’s still like 3 packages I’ve failed finding any patches for, juries out on them as of yet. All in all, we’re getting there. Everything will be moved into a singlular repo. Yes, the url will change and a few other odds & ends as of yet. I’ve also changed the tag on the kde files, since I should have a long time ago. I’ll post more news on my web soon enough. Apologies for the wait.

Figured out the #gnome issue and why a live works fine, and an install goes haywire. Pipewire. It’s not default in Slackware and apparently GDM won’t start without pipewire running these days. NO ONE KNOWS THE PAIN THIS HAS CAUSED!! #enable #pipewire #slackware

you wouldn’t believe I just found the answer to my problem, and now I feel so dumb/ignorant why I didn’t think of it before (and why it works on the live). Gnome expect pipewire running, that’s not default in Slackware. As root a “pipewire-enable”, reboot and all that and gnome works. 🤯🫠😭😭😭

it seems I’d have to redo bits of the installer init for liveslak iso building using a different kernel and it doesn’t want to let me build with the last 6.6.30 package available. However, you can update the kernel on a liveslak (if persistent) https://docs.slackware.com/slackware:liveslak search for “updating the kernel” and have at it! Oh and https://slackware.uk/cumulative/ has old packages ;) Sorry that seems the best I can do without hours and hours of building. 🫠

I’ve tried 6.6 on arm64 with the same results but I don’t have any amd hardware to test either. Whatever it is, it is likely a very specific percentage of things. I can’t even find any patches from other distros that would even matter, this one has stumped me thus far.

I’ve tried so many different build configurations and nothing seems to do the trick. It works, that I can see, but wtf happens on install? 🫠 The entire thing works just fine in my systems, there some factor breaking it on some others. All I can think is kernel or mesa or some other video driver… gah this is maddening!

that’s doesn’t make sense to me. But the install would default to runlevel 3 unless I changed it to 4 in the installer, which who knows if I did. I’m mostly curious if gnome starts properly, as there’s so many issues on different systems with 48, and I can’t find a clear path to the breakage.

yeah that’s what I get on arm64. But my i5 Intel hd4000 (antique) system works just fine. I’m only seeing this on non-Intel and only in Slackware, as Fedora & Debian work but I can’t place what’s at fault here.

you can edit /etc/gdm/custom.conf and uncomment the #Wayland=false line and reboot and it should work with x11 completely. As for first user setup, I don’t think the package is even included but that is remnants of “dlackware” likely in the liveslak script. Some of it proved useful to keep around, other bits had been changed here and there over time.

So I put together a #GNOME 48.0 #slackware liveslak, with the basic core desktop (no repo attached). I'd really like to know from anyone who would try it out, if GDM/mutter work on your hardware under Wayland (defaults). I'm trying to understand scenarios where it's broken. The ISO defaults to "Gnome Classic", you'll have to hit the gear in GDM and select "Gnome Wayland" manually first time (if GDM even works for you) login. Well, another day, another new addition for #slackware! Today brings the addition of google-go-lang to the official package set! I have not removed it from #nwgshell yet but will be doing so shortly.

see Pat pulls a little trick with icu being that he puts the old lib into the aaa_libraries package — so nothing ever broke since the lib is still in the system. Still, I have to locate and fix before the old lib is removed eventually down the road. nwg updates also pending (and WebKit— but I’m not rebuilding that ;) Slackware backward compatibility tricks for the win! 😂

I made a live of my setup for a gnome desktop to check things out (even though my system works fine) so I can test on other devices. But it’s rock solid of course, outside of arm. I really think there’s something deeper going on, but I’ve really no real data. Just waiting at this point. 🫠

Install on VMWare Fusion is still rocky, but that's expected. Luckily, I have a script to do the mounts so I can create an EFI properly, install grub, and get it going, but it still can't find my rootdev. dracut to the rescue here.The install works, though it's a bit more manual than some could be ready for.

Finally trying the #slackwareaarch64 ISO installer and we're installing the system after a little fdisk setup. The font is rather large, but luckily I've memorized the fdisk opts by now ;)

It has been determined the final mutter 48.0 release is fucked. Which explains why Wayland refuses to work, probably why GDM shits the bed, and who knows what else, since I can't get any further. Mutter works in some scenarios, but not all. I'm trying a few different solutions on differing hardware to gather data. Once I get a stable, working DE on everything, I'll ship 48 #gnome Desktop for #slackwareaarch64
