I bought a washed fleece (from a sheep named Dolores ❤️) about 4 years ago, and I’ve just started processing lately. It’s the Shetland breed, with a length of about 3 inches with lovely curls on the ends. Even when fleece has been washed there’s still a little VM (vegetable matter) in it, including in commercial fleece or yarn preparations. Sheepies are animals that live in a field 🤷🏼‍♀️
I use a small fiber brush to open the locks and let pieces of grass fall into the trash can underneath. Then the piece of floof goes on a drumcarder twice to make a nice batt. From this batt I’ll separate into strips and spin the yarn I want. Since this fleece is unprocessed I may dye it after I spin it depending on the project I decide.
I’ve always been fascinated by the whole process. Our ancestors raised sheep in harsh conditions, harvested wool, cleaned it, carded it with very basic tools, spun it on a drop spindle before spinning wheels were invented, and then wove on a loom to make the cloth to keep family members from going around naked. I’m very fortunate that I can do this for fun at my own pace rather than at every spare minute just to have the basics. 🧶

My grandma showed me her mother’s yearbook, around 1912-15, and her mother’s picture was missing because she had cut it out. Her mother had told her she didn’t like the picture because she thought it was ugly. My grandma wished that she had the picture though. I bet even if you are ugly, the people that love you think you are beautiful. ❤️

Here are two pictures that show my progress from spinning novice to competent. On the cream bobbin the fuzzy wooly bit is the earliest and left is the latest and you can see what a LOT of hours of practice look like. In between the cream ball and the beautiful cranberry color are several hundred hours of practice! 🧶
