it seems from everything I’ve read about this that it’s been very methodical, almost procedural. Like they intentionally didn’t ask certain questions along the way, and have been precise (with surgical precision almost) in their language, while being vague with their (imho, word salad) intentions.
I’m also American, so I hear ya about the U.S. vs Canadian systems.

More news out of Alberta, this time more drama at the U of A: They’re axing EDI in their hiring processes. This comes only 6 years after implementing the policy, and one year after renaming it to ACB (Access, Community and Belonging). They’re the first Canadian University to do this.
“I do believe that there's been pressure by the government on post-secondaries to abandon EDI policies,” Gotell said. “Because it's not really clear to me why we would be abandoning a framework that we just put in place six years ago.”

Maybe I could write something up for each listing that explains the process more clearly, but I find that most people would likely be confused if I said their Canadian packages would ship via USPS, so there are no tariffs - and then in another sentence say their shipping charge includes import fees + my time to do the paperwork for every order manually.
I haven't yet figured out the best way to go about it because it was working really well up until now.
When I lived in the U.S., I owned a business that shipped (importing/exporting) all around the world, so dealing with these issues isn’t new to me, but Etsy being in the middle is, and it's super annoying.

(apologies - this is long) Yeah, Etsy has always had that on my shop by default. I'm unable to change it since I am a Canadian shop.
I think Etsy may be adding some sort of alert during checkout for Americans, which is putting customers off after they hit 'purchase'. I've had like 2-3 help requests *ever* to refund after purchase, and I've had 11 in two weeks. eek.
I also add this in my description for every product to try to offset Etsy's statements that hurt sellers like me who follow CUSMA import procedures:
"We’re approved through ChitChats to ship duty-free to the U.S., so you can shop with confidence. Thank you for your patience while we navigate the recent tariff changes.”
Also, all of my packages ship with USPS labels, that's what I print off from my office. My broker takes my packages over the border and ships them directly, so tariffs are not even theoretically possible unless my broker can't get them over the border because I messed up my paperwork on the order, which has yet to happen.
I am also legally required to place a disclosure at the bottom that says *you might still see tariffs*, even though it's impossible, since they ship USPS.

I’ve noticed an exceptional increase in American customers believing the tariff propaganda coming out of the U.S.
It’s caused a high number of people who place orders with me to ask for a refund, for fear that they’ll pay tariffs. This has been over the past 2 weeks.
I make it as clear as possible on my shop that I pay broker fees and properly import my products into the U.S. so they won’t face tariffs. I wonder if Etsy is now warning customers when they buy from Canadians? Whatever it is, it’s hurting my buisness.

If your mastodon instance is hosted with toot.io, I highly recommend moving your instance to a more reliable hosting provider.
I’ve had a terrible experience since they were sold by the original owner and I plan to move our instance to a new host asap.
Unresolved slowdowns. Lack of replies from support. Unnecessary hurdles to get them to respond. Unending hours of stress.

Smol Etsy rant…
Etsy has a program where they force higher performing shops into an advertising scheme that takes 15% off the top of every sale.
They call them ‘Offsite Ads’. If anyone clicks into my shop and makes a purchase within 30 days - they’ll snag 15% off the entire total (+regular Etsy fees, taxes, shipping, all of it).
I just had a ‘sale’ come through for $75. Wanna know much I actually get paid after fees, taxes, and shipping? $32. That’s it.
Please, PLEASE shop directly through Etsy if you are shopping there and supporting small businesses this holiday season! Try to avoid click through Ad purchases!

I’m rebuilding my Etsy shop :) They took down 1/3rd of my listings because I including the keywords ‘adhd’ and ‘autism’. Yeah, super uncool. They also hold my profits for 21 business days… also uncool.
So, I’m going to give the independent shop thing a go instead. :)
It won’t be perfect but it’ll be something and that’s a solid start.
React is fun!! 🤩 Granted, my knowledge is limited, but I love the idea of breaking things down into reusable components.

With time, I’ve learned to understand myself better and let go of that stigma. This journey is what pushed me to start making fidgets and neurodivergent-focused tools for others, and to share them online. I put a lot of care into creating thoughtful items that I hope genuinely improve people’s lives.

I sell some stuff on Marketplace occasionally and I find it SO weird how some people in Edmonton think a 15 min drive is incredibly far away. They act like I’m asking them to drive across the entire country or something.
That - and how some folks cool off when they realize what area of town we live in.

U.S. Customer Importing Update for my Etsy shop:
Looks like I’m going to have to pay tariffs on some of the items I make and want to import to U.S. customers.
Some products are classified under one HTS code that is exempt under CUSMA. Those items include decorations, figurines, containers, etc.
All my other items are considered 'toys' and treated similarly to anything coming in from China, even though I make everything myself within Canada. It's still subject to the 35% tariffs.
Due to this, I'll have to apply for a hybrid type of approval with an importing broker. Further, my U.S. customers will see a flat 20% price increase on all items in my store to balance out non-tariff and tariffed products. It will not be labelled as a tariff at checkout; Etsy doesn't have that option yet.
I'm super sorry about this. I wish I had a better solution.
Shipping should open up again in a week or so, I hope.

As I was reading, I was brought back to the days of playing snake on my Nokia cell phone and pretending to be productive in high school with a palm pilot.

I hope it’s ok if I pop in with an update:
Other couriers are offering CUSMA exempt shipments, but it requires a bit of extra paperwork that CP is denying Canadians.
For example, I just received this email a few minutes ago from ChitChats. I’ve used them to ship through CanadaPost in the past, so they must be offering more than CanPost is willing to offer directly. Stallion is also working on the same arrangements.

Can Post has unfortunately outright stated they decided that the tariffs apply to every package going into the U.S. in their network, regardless of CUSMA. I believe this is wrong and anti-Canadian.

thank you. I don’t understand why people don’t look this up for themselves to see how much of a headache it is… and that shipping CUSMA compliant products for small businesses was a zero market before this — there are just no structures in place yet to make this go smoothly for buyers and sellers.
If I can’t offer my buyer as stress free shopping experience as possible, I’m going to pause selling.

^^ Etsy shop update: All U.S. orders have been suspended. I'm really sorry to my friends who can no longer receive orders from me because Trump is an asshole.
The tariff changes affect more than my little shop; they affect thousands of merchants in Canada, the UK, the EU, Australia and beyond who are looking to sell to customers within the U.S. It is especially impactful for small businesses that sell lower-cost items and need to use affordable shipping options.
As of today, Canada Post has no systems in place to absorb the rapid changes to import policies. I hope they will figure things out soon - but as of right now, the latest is that CANADA POST SHIPPING SERVICES bound to the U.S. will be suspended as of Monday, August 25th. (This affects all Tracked Packets and Expedited Parcels)
Side note: Why is the news not covering this!!?

I can honestly relate. I used to be a credit analyst at a big 5 bank. Automation was happening slowly when I left in 2020, and it’s only gone up since. Basically, no one is hiring for those roles anymore and the banks are reducing staff through attrition instead of layoffs.

Story time! 💜🥹💕
Being able to do some product photography again has been healing.
When I damaged my neck (nerve damage) 12 years ago I had to walk away from my photography jobs in San Francisco - magazines, newspapers, freelance, commercial - you name it, I did it.
It felt like I lost my identity. I never really recovered from the feeling of that loss and ran from it, tbh. I went into banking and I shut down my creative side almost entirely.
Flash forward to 38 y/o, going back to school, plus about 5 years of therapy has finally culminated in a breakthrough.
I’m going to open a small business (again) and use my diverse skill set to make it work for me - new me. ✨
Love yourselves, friends. It’s worth it.

OK, this is intriguing. I'm going through the syllabus for my next class for the Summer term, and the final essay assignment is to have AI create an entire essay based on my essay ideas. Then I'm supposed to analyze it, mark it up, and then revise and write my own version of it. Weird?
At first, I really hated it... I still mostly hate it... But I guess it’s kind of a creative way to show young people that AI shouldn't be used for original work and to make them think critically about what it does wrong. On the other hand, isn't this just teaching them how to use AI to generate essays and how to edit them enough to make them their own for an assignment? Again, weird choice for a major assignment.
I also have to do a group writing project, and I’m not happy about it.
Overall, I'm meh about taking this class, I really hope it surprises me. I could honestly just use a break for 2 months right now. Next spring/summer, I may just take some time off.

I have a Supernote Manta and I love it so so damn much. It’s an e-ink tablet that blends handwriting with digital tools. Have you looked into e-ink for hand writing notes/journalling/creating projects? Would that be of interest at all or do you prefer 100% digital now? Just curious. 🧐

I had an intriguing realization the other day.
Context: I’m a returning University student who is nearly 40. Digital everything is overwhelming for me even though I love tech for other things in my life outside of studying/learning.
Ok, so. I find that I prefer to hand write my notes. It helps slow things down. It provides a drawing board to connect my ideas. I struggle to understand the purpose of tech that converts handwriting to text. Just type it, then?
Then, I realized that younger people were not taught to write in the same way people my age and older were. It was our main input, our main source of distilling information. Most younger people have had screens and computers around them (digital text) since they were born. Therefore, converting anything they write by hand to digital format likely feels natural for them.
Just an interesting observation I had. Likely fueled by my rigid autistic thinking. Your thoughts are welcome.

So… my final exam is lost.
I wrote it at the exam centre in person with disability accommodations last week. I do this for all of my proctored midterms and exams.
The testing centre apparently misplaced it. What a massive procedural failure. Grades are due on Monday. I was told not to worry but I’m in PANIC MODE. 🫨
Fuck. I had a 95% going into that exam and worked my ass off studying for it. What the heck. What do I do? Help. 😭
