More old software; i don't think this has been maintained in 20 years but i was still able to build and use it.
The program is x48 and it's an HP-48G(X)/48S(X) calculator emulator.
simply being "unmaintained" should never be a reason not to use something if it's good.

you don't have to. Look at mine. It's purely html and CSS and the newest CSS I use is from around 2010 (for shadows under images). Most is much older.
Browsers display sites written in the old ways just fine.

emacs is a text editor from the 1970's :p
SSG is "static site generator" which you can use to kind of template webpages, so if you have a lot of similarly formatted ones and you want to change the layout of them, you can edit one file and ideally the rest can be changed automatically to use the new layout.
I've thought of making one for myself in PHP but never bothered following through

Well, it took a while but i wouldn't call it hard. I did the whole thing by hand in emacs, although maybe a static site generator would have been a good idea. But it's still totally unnecessary to use an SSG and i've not used anything like that on my site for the HTML or the CSS.

gitlab sites/github pages and their ilk have the potential to be used for personal website hosting but i think web dev has strayed too far from its roots and the art of making a simplistic website is perhaps harder to hone these days with all the bad advice about frameworks out there.
My site works in IE 5 and dillo with almost no effort expended on my part (I made it work in dillo, working in IE 5 was coincidental). No idea if it works in IE4.

My own values are free of this "gender role" tripe, but imagine for a moment being a girl who is constantly being told she can't do things for herself and needs protecting despite wanting to live for herself. She'd see very few characters she could play as that look like her in the same setting as the Legend of Zelda games you enjoyed in youth. There've been, what, 17 or 18 sort of "mainline style" LoZ games; in that time girls have had… Wand of Gamelon. Maybe some girls want to be in a heroic role, too.

Some of this stuff is compelling, and it's a little better written because it does indicate some of his retracted statements and blur them out by default at least. But I don't think we can squarely blame exclusively stallman for this undercurrent, even if he's an enabler. He is one of many. Sure, he's old enough that he's now one of the "pioneers" relatively (which means he definitely can be called complicit) and he's said things that are frankly pretty creepy feeling towards women. but I don't believe he individually is the sole reason or the root of all of this, more a symptom of it.
I don't worship stallman anymore like i did at one point in time, but he feels like a punching bag as much as anything.
I just don't feel comfortable with ganging up on people in general. I think the best thing that can happen is for """problematic""" people to simply become irrelevant rather than publicly whipped/"cancelled." It's less distressing for everyone that way.

Thanks so much for the praise! I wrote the whole thing entirely by hand in emacs! :D
That's also why the HTML sources are mostly 80 column wrapped.
I really love this praise btw - helps me feel vindicated that I'm doing things right. Funny story, I didn't actually do hacks to make IE5 work, i just made sure it mostly worked in Dillo and it seems like that's enough to make it work in IE! :p

tbh if you limit yourself to just what's in posix sh scripts they aren't that bad… apart from some more complicated regexes. Maybe perl would be better for that.
but basic flow control in shell isn't bad. Unfortunately a lot of people aren't very principled and start throwing tons of bash extensions into their shell scripts which makes it a lot harder.
similarly i write javascript to be able to run on basically anything, if i write it at all. much like [my website](https://megatokyo.moe/ ), although that has no JS. Works in IE5 though :)

hmmm, well i remember that FreeCAD is broken in python 3.12 but not why. That's the most recent python program I've encountered issues in. Likewise I have some older machine learning software that i had to use at university a couple years ago that only works in python 3.5, it malfunctions in weird ways in 3.6 and 3.4 doesn't have everything it needs.
I think in the past I've had deluge break with python updates as well.

python minor version changes cause fatal errors for me regularly since they remove stuff.
tbh i get what you're saying but i like shell scripts for a lot of things. Especially if you stick to posix stuff and understand its limitations, it's not that bad. A posix-style bourne shell script will likely still run in a version of bash or whatever 20 years in the future; I can't say the same for python.

TL;DR just do rm -rf thing-to-replace; cp -R source dest.
-r is a newish thing (introduced to POSIX in 2017 as -R (uppercase), though GNU cp did it a long time before then) that in my opinion should never have been added, just so you know. DOS didn't even easily let you delete dirs and everything in them recursively before version 6 (DELTREE). The old unix way to copy directories was something like tar cf - sourcedir | (cd /destination-parent; tar xf -) if you wanted to make a dir called 'sourcedir' in the destination, or else cd sourcedir; tar cf - . | (cd /path/to/destdir; tar xf -) to copy the files inside the dir instead of the dir itself.
in DOS, you'd use xcopy to work on directories, not the normal "copy" command. Because "copy" was rigidly defined as being for files, much like unix cp originally was.
cp -r is a nice shorthand but it also introduces the inconsistency that you speak of. Because cp was originally not intended to work on directories at all.

you sound like the harfbuzz maintainer/developer who ruined a bunch fonts for everyone using GTK on low-DPI monitors and used that exact reply to justify being an asshole to everyone who was begging him to support them.
It's not always feasible to "just make a fork" and maintain it or seamonkey would be able to keep pace with mozilla's codebase.

I'd like it to be an extra large d-pad like in a SNES controller instead. I like the feedback and precision of the 'cross.'
