I am LOVING seeing so many AI projects being paused or binned.
There’s one silver lining in the mass layoffs, they can’t lay off their absurd investment in power, cooling, and hardware. Loss adjusters and liquidators are rubbing their hands with glee.
Also, many silicon spinners are demanding 5 year agreements on production. It’s go big or go home time, and there will be some casualties.
One org I reluctantly work with pivoted their entire operating model to AI and agents, and they royally screwed their staff over.
They’re not hiring them as consultants at twice their original salary as everything fell on it’s arse, and who knew that go to market suits with a prompt can’t keep infrastructure or business running. Hilariously I know one engineer negotiated a one-sided 12 month contract notice period.
These people are going to get desperate, fast. Fetch the s’mores and let em roast.

When GenAI rolled along I was massively dissuaded from working on my creative endeavours and sharing them with people.
Not because I desire agency over my IP above, but to deny the tech giants of it. I denied myself the most human of things to spite soulless corporations.
Lately I’ve been picking up those creative pursuits again, because what I’ve noticed is that the people that actually matter want you output anyway, even when everything created by anyone, ever, is at their fingertips.

The summary execution of people in cars driving away from aggressors in unmarked vehicles and unofficial clothing shows everything wrong with the state of law enforcement over there.
Poor training, poor discipline, poor vetting. It’s either incompetence or intentional.
You don’t draw weapons on a vehicle stop for starters, and you don’t stop in a way they can easily drive at you. You especially don’t discharge a weapon in a busy street with bystanders and colleagues nearby, in their direction.
This quote from one incident is really telling.
Standing in front of scared civilians with weapons drawn and expecting a rational outcome.
These people are scared of their own shadows. If your first instinct is to protect yourself (the implication of being ready to murder someone), and not the persons in the vehicle, or the general public, you’re in the wrong job. Intellectually immature without the emotional intelligence to de-escalate.
Stop giving away badges and guns in cereal boxes.

Fondly remembering the time I was neck deep in a digital provenance project and they were coming up with some really impressive tech.
And the first time the team that had demonstrated their work to IT teams in the business, this is how the conversation went:

The research team went silent.
24 months, 30 people, tens of millions of pounds.One of the most cutting edge computer laboratories in the world.
Unraveled by tech cavemen in Metallica and Star Wars T-shirts only there because they have to be, and desperately wanting to get back the Quake LAN party they had set up in the server room.
We’re all guilty of it, but it’s so easy to get stuck in the detail that you miss the most obvious things.

Me in my teens expecting having to choose between being a rebel street-rider or corpo slicker.
Choosing the underworld before turning corpo to try to change from the inside, using technology to overthrow corrupt officials and cruel oligarchs.
Looking at the cyberdeck I was promised, and it has a 2hr battery life, adverts in the UI, applications frequently stopping responding, can’t be repaired, or augmented with black market parts, and can be compromised by a cool summer breeze.

Similarly, I know that ChatGPT has stolen my work without permission, but I lack the means to prove it.
Also, there’s an entire chapter that is filled with plausible but entirely incorrect information as part of training materials I’ve created… and it gets quoted as fact, so I’m pretty happy with that.
