Email protocols are free and open. But the major email providers (Gmail, Outlook, Yahoo) monetize through ads, data mining, and surveillance. The infrastructure costs are covered by selling user data and attention. There is a cost. We pay with our privacy and attention.

We don't need Nostr to pay people Bitcoin to watch ads.
But we do need Nostr to prevent big tech from co-opting the solution.
We could have built Billboard as just another centralized ad platform that pays people in Bitcoin. But that would have been vulnerable to the same problems that plague current advertising:
platform lock-in
data control
eventual monopolization
Instead, we're using Nostr as the foundational data layer for attention marketplaces.
People publish their attention prices and preferences as public Nostr events attached to their private key. This creates transparent, immutable consent records that any developer can read and build competing marketplaces from.
The PROMO Protocol is like HTTP for attention marketplaces - anyone can implement it, preventing any single entity from controlling the system.
This approach is better because it creates true decentralization: attention sellers own their private key and pricing data, advertisers can read public signals directly, and the marketplace data is open and uncontrolled by any single entity. Instead of building another platform that could be co-opted, we're building the infrastructure that makes big tech's business model obsolete.
This is like using the internet protocol not just for websites, but for creating an entirely new economic system where attention is property, not a resource to be extracted.

+bots&trolls
Let us tell you how NextBlock Fixes This.
The latest infestation of "AI" Bots on nostr reminds us that there will always be someone trying to access your attention without your permission.
What are our options? Ignoring. Muting. Or expecting the relay operator to figure out.
Kinda the same options we had on legacy social right?
With new technology comes new possibilities!
NextBlock's first principle is you own your attention. We don't.
No one should have access to your attention unless you've granted them access. Or they've paid for it (see #attentionmarketplace).
So how do we stop +bots&trolls?
We don't. We just don't show you anything posted unless you've added that person as a contact.
But instead of only relying on your default "follow" list, NextBlock, directs you to add people as contacts. Then we have two additional lists you can add and remove accounts from.
The first new list is called your block and it is limited to 21 accounts. Think of this as a tribute to MySpaces's Top 8.
When you are scrolling your block feed, you only see posts and comments from those 21 accounts. Everything else is suppressed. So in this scenario you would never +bots&trolls.
The second new list is called your neighborhood, and is a core feature of NextBlock.
When you are scrolling your neighborhood feed the same rules of your block apply except your neighborhood size is uncapped.
As you add and remove people from your neighborhood, you are, in a sense, curating your own feed.
But it doesn't stop there, other people can visit your neighborhood and see NextBlock as you see NextBlock. Or you can visit theirs.
Still only people you added to your neighborhood have access to you or your visitors' attention.
We believe this creates a positive incentive for everyone to police their own neighborhoods and remove any accounts that are displaying +bot&troll like behavior.

They're using “popularity” - a metric they created and control - to decide whose content is worthy of being shown in high quality. We are even more beholden to the Cartel than we thought. The resolution of our photos and videos is only unfucked if it makes them money.
