Update from the new garden:
Tomatoes are looking good so far.
Cayenne peppers are looking good.
No luck with the habañeros nor serranos.
It's already almost time to harvest coriander seed, the cilantro was fantastic.
The chamomile is still producing well.
The lemon basil has done very well.
The pineapple sage should bloom again before long.
No onion blossoms, small sad. But they've been delicious nonetheless.
Even the oregano that should never have survived is bolting rn.
Not pictured are the applemint and spearmint which are both loving the east side of the cabin, the lemon thyme, the kitchen sage, the rosemary, the fennel, and the sweetgrass. Good stuff.
This means so much to me. This was part of me that I didn't want to lose when I made the jump to this timeline.
I really need to weed the crabgrass and clover...

Watching the ridiculously talented runners be greeted by family and crew at the finish line at midnight is awesome. Just as fun is helping out when the final finishers come in at like noon, the average Joes who figured out how to overcome the pain cave and get through that final loop not knowing if they'd make the cutoff, but still persevering. So fuggin sweet to see.

I was talking to an elite ultra runner about attempting 100 at a race she's won a few times and where I usually death march the last few miles of the 50. Her only piece of advice was to get out and work the downhill switchbacks. They will make or break a finish.

@npub12m3…pl5e Exactly!!! I was at the final aid station at a 50k in AZ last year when a volunteer came to check on me. I was not acclimated to the elevation and the terrain. I told him i was good just exhausted. He told me the best part about not being fast was getting to actually enjoy the views. He is not wrong. We were overlooking the foothills of the Catalina Mountains, that is just traversed on the AZT. It was breathtaking

Effortpoast:
Race went well. Got dive bombed by bats twice had a raccoon fall from a tree and almost land on me.
First six miles were paved bike path so I caught some time with 10:00 pace until I hit the technical portion. Took a wrong turn around midnight and ran six bonus miles. Was running on pace to finish around 13:00-13:30 until then. Ended up just under 15. Not disappointed at all.
4500 ft of climb. It was the deep decents that killed me. I couldn't feel my feet, aside from the shooting pain of a blistered toe pushing against my shoe, after about 3am so I didn't trust my self to run downhill much. Final four miles was streets through town, 12:00 ish pace form miles 46-50. Still had a little leg apparently, no death march to the finish. Feels good man.
And I only lost three pounds which means I'm getting better at the concurrent eating contest. Idk if you've ever tried to ingest calories after like 20 miles of running let alone 40, but that is a challenge all its own. High fived a few people along the way. Got some high fives at the finish line and the coffee from the shop across the street was fantastic, five shot latte got me home without falling asleep at the wheel. Standard recovery pizza was had for dinner. I just just finished catching 12 or 13 hours of sleep. GM

Pre race meals are usually dinner the night before because you're racing at 5am not 4pm. Today's pre race meal is a couple of eggs scrambled with hot sauce and topped with fresh salsa, served alongside some cashews, smoked gouda and cherries. #fedpoasting

Most ultras have aid stations every 5-7 miles or so. Mostly to refill water and look for signs of distress in the runners. Many times there are snack offerings that are carb heavy and contain sodium or potassium to keep the electrolytes in balance. I did catch an hour nap during my last 24 hour race and prolly slept about two hours total in my first 100 mile finish last year. I do not sleep for 50s.

Scorcher! For road races i do have pace goals dependent on the distance. For trail races that are less than 25k (15 miles) i so have a pace i want to follow depending on how much climb I'm facing. For trail races over 25 k and ultras, my only goal is to finish. I'm not competitive at this distance, I'm just out there for the views and the challenge. And to prove to y'all that I truly am that retarded and I have the pictures to prove it.

Vasoline at aid stations should i need it although I've not, even when I did the 100 last year. But I appreciate the rundown cause who knows what I'm actually forgetting. I forgot my watch for a 10k/marathon (back to back basically a 50k) challenge last year and had to rawdog my pace. Killed it tho. Almost podium.

@npub1589…wjd9 Hell yeah for your girl!!! Halfs are a great distance, one of my favorites.
If she doesn't have one, get her a hand held bottle so she doesn't have to stop at the water tables unless she needs Gatorade. It'll save her at least 30 seconds or a minute, prolly more.
For ultras I have a running vest that holds two water bottles and everything in the pic is packed in it now. I also have a flip belt that will hold my phone, keys, and blister kit.

Inventory of pretty much evening everything that will be on my person tomorrow. Decided not to do drop bag. The aid stations should have pickles and potato chips. Some of them have bacon. WAGMI

One of my favorite ultras runs a fantastic bike trail with some crazy switchbacks. I've seen the guys navigate down them. I've not the balls for that type of adrenaline rush.
