An aboriginal woman leapt to her death to evade colonisers but her baby, which she was caring, survived... very sad. For days we've been mopping and washing her guts (acrobatics 101), the kitchen 'carpet', the pantry, whatevs. She stank of sesame something awful. We're now in Innisfail and have put the carpet under the carwash pressure wash, done the guts again and finally she drinks no longer. Hard to believe the forced evacuation in 1963, to Bamaga (hundreds of miles away), but there's a thriving little alcohol free indigenous community here now. Cultural centre closed coz 'all the laydeez' with their art are in Cairns for the art festival. Spent some time at the Aboriginal Cultural Centre, found the shopping Centre (a small air conditioned complex which looks like an old warehouse from the outside!) and now we're off to Mapoon, an hour's drive north. Stopped in Murwillumbah for morning tea only to discover a MARMALADE CATASTROPHE in one of Rhonda's cupboards: my cumquat marmalade had fallen over, lid had come off and it had oozed everywhere. Clean-up done, but what a waste, lucky we have a box of my jam and marmalade to give away, with spares. Didn't arrive till 7pm so we've just had fried eggs, raw vegies, and toast and marmalade for tea.
