I'm almost done with On the historicity of Jesus in which Richard Carrier (an atheist) argues that the original form of Christianity was a mystery religion much like the many Pagan ones of the time, in which Jesus was a celestial being revealed in visions and in interpretations of the Old Testament, who had been killed by demonic forces and resurrected within the heavens, with allegorical tales placing similar events on earth to be read by the uninitiated with the truth reserved for those initiated into the mysteries.
These then got reinterpreted into supposed historic accounts by later sects for various compounding reasons such as evangelistic efficacy, historic sayings of the Lord being stronger for church hierarchies than preeminence of personal revelation and the extreme obscurity and near-death of the religion leading to the esoteric view becoming an ostracised heresy.
I don't know much about Gnosticism but this sounds like it could be of interest to you.
