Living on an old farm in rural #Lithuania, fixing it up in the hope of having found a place to call home. Used to live on a sailboat, cruising Med & Atlantic while repairing the boat. Before that, the usual computer/network/electronics jobs. Prefer to #DIY, repair and re-use things. Mano Lietuviškai kalba yra blogai.

Not much inside, luckily. I'm slowly demolishing it as its in poor shape and I want another firewood store in its place. Slow work as the thing was double walled with straw packed between as insulation. And a mummified pine marten. Looks like the roof is also insulated. Good thing about straw: Much easier to recycle than slag wool! 😁 #GoatShed #Homestead #Cleanup #Demolition #Straw https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/116/398/942/283/011/534/original/9247b2a3d7564e4d.jpg https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/116/398/942/295/547/388/original/e1ce54df706e6ce2.jpg npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar @nprofile…4ma3 Just with that mulch, which is actually a section of the animal barn floor that I raked up and threw on top. Bit of straw, bit of bark, lots of mouse poop. Garlic loves cold and is well adapted to it. Don't ask me how it does it, perhaps it contains little or no water that could rupture its cells when freezing, but don't quote me on that. I put them 8 cm deep and that seems to have worked well. We still have mild night frosts currently. npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Wife arrive! Or uh, partner. Whatever. I think they're both the same storks as last year. Because they are totally used to my bullshit. And last year that took some time and suspicious eyeballing first. The shagging has begun immediately. There's no foreplay, the whole thing lasts about 5 seconds but goes on many times per day, accompanied by slow beak clacking. Then several minutes of intense preening to straighten the feathers. #Stork #Nest #StorkNest #Bird #BirdsOfMastodon #FediBird #Homestead https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/116/313/345/364/881/241/original/aac2a58c6f65ec22.jpg npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Mr. Stork looks a bit grumpy on account of the rain. The roof is E/W facing, the garden full of shady trees (nice, except for solar) and the only option is way out in the meadow with a looong cable (not ideal either, but probably the least bad option). npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar @nprofile…dymg I think the success* of Electron stems from web frontend people who only know some mutation of Javascript but wanted to make shonky crossplatform desktop apps without having to learn anything new like wxWidgets or Lazarus. * successful like Covid was successful npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Somewhere along the enshittification of computing road we're on, Java desktop apps have become tolerable as they're still faster and less resource wasting than Browser-in-a-box (Electron) apps and everyone had to get a ridiculously overpowered computer to run those anyways. The "symbol of auspiciousness and good luck for most of the Western world" never represented anything good? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swastika The feelings about the swastika in Germany are quite comparable to the feelings about the hammer and sickle in former Soviet Republics, a symbol of some extremely bad times that nobody in their right mind wants back. Those are essentially converted delivery vans. Generally very reliable, but everything hinges on the engine. Look them up, get one that runs half a million km, not all do. The rest is just a box that should not leak and have the conveniences you desire (bed, galley, toilet, the showers suck anyways). It will break and you will fix it or pay twice for having it fixed. You got the rest right, part fun adventure and part ghetto and a bonus part of "you can't stay here we're calling the cops". And getting very excited about finding a manhole you can pry open with a hook so you can dump your toilet tank into the hole without having to carry your collected excreations around in a sloshy tank. npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar @nprofile…zm8m Test driven madness! 😁 npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar @nprofile…vjcg I wouldn't drink it, the dehumidifier is not designed for producing drinking water and doesn't use the right plastics for that, there may be residue from manufacturing and mould can grow. Good to use as wiper fluid with a drop of dishwashing detergent, in a steam iron or of course, a humidifier :) npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Servicing "service-free" (valve regulated) lead-acid batteries. Crack open the plastic cover to reveal the "valves" which usually are silicone rubber caps. Pop them off, check water* level, top up and inspect the plates if you can see them. Then charge with maximum voltage (15.0V in this case). The cover is part of it, so when charging you need to glue, clamp or tape it back on so the valves can do their job. Optionally, use a desulphator to recover sulphated plates. This small UPS battery recovered most of its 7 Ah back from almost nothing. #DIY #Battery #Repair #LeadAcid #VRLA #UPS * You can buy demineralized water, but if you have a dehumidifier you can use the water from that, which is typically of better quality than what you buy in the store as it is almost pure condensation. https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/116/104/746/180/875/894/original/1cb393d01f43a113.jpg https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/116/104/746/192/317/691/original/4e92dd634aedbf9b.jpg https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/116/104/760/115/835/810/original/8930937fac040da1.jpg https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/116/104/760/123/205/785/original/d306d6714cea3735.jpg npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Pretty cold. Discoveries I made this morning: EVA rubber boots are no longer flexible and difficult to wear until your feet warm them up. LCD displays stop working. The fancy microcontroller thermometer had an integer overflow and showed +64°C when it was... I guess -31 or 32? 😆 The -25°C winter wiper fluid is now solid, but it shouldn't damage the cars as it has contracted rather than expanded like water does. The barn cat is still alive and got warm water and leftover porridge. LRT reports -34°C in nearby Ukmergė and that diesel engines can't run on jelly. Apparently LPG vehicles had problems too, not enough Propane in the mix: https://www.lrt.lt/en/news-in-english/19/2825089/lithuania-records-lowest-temperatures-in-30-years-cold-disrupts-public-transport #Lithuania #Cold #Winter #Diesel #Physics #Electronics https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/116/000/504/779/869/506/original/c798edba30cb2417.jpg npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar @nprofile…ynd9 You're friends with Anatoly the cleaner? 🤣 npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar @nprofile…vkq7 Quite useful for gently accelerating epoxy curing times though. If you're not familiar, they're a Li-Ion battery dressed up as AA with an internal PCB that regulates charging and bucks them to 1.5V. Good for devices that aren't happy with the 1.2V of a NiMH AA rechargeable. The capacity is bullshit, as usual when you buy from China, real one is maybe half that, but that would've been ok. Not okay: Overheating to the point where the battery compartment is deformed and the device fried*. At least they didn't catch fire. 👎 Can't recommend at all. * Probably. Can't test it with other batteries because they no longer fit in the deformed housing. #Battery #LiIon #AliExpress #AA #Rechargeable #Fail https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/115/304/919/666/196/490/original/396a5477049e75c1.jpg https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/115/304/919/893/791/697/original/1f59d2e1571a30df.jpg npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Little guy came armed. Those are generally known as "cardboard houses". Note how thin the walls are. Minimal insulation. Relatively cheap and fast to build though. Northern Europe has real log (beam) houses, which are nothing like that cardboard house, although you think they look similar? Plenty here in Lithuania waiting for someone to restore them. And some forest still standing here and there :) One modern, cost-effective alternative are wood framed, straw bale filled houses, which offer good insulation. npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Traditional well building by a pro: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1SlsMDhPkk [Bavarian with English subtitles] #Well #Well #Well #Water #Craft #LostArt npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Composting the potato tops and other stuff that grew there. Despite being against all the holy scripture of composting, tossing everything on a big pile actually works pretty well for us 😆 It's outside the garden fence by the forest, so various creatures come and rummage through it, which probably helps. Back when this place was built, people still knew. There's double walls filled with straw to keep animal shelters warm. Decades later, the straw is still there, mostly intact, even though the exterior wall has failed and exposed it. For small areas like this insulated bee hive, chopped straw was used. This is equivalent to modern blow-in insulation materials, but completely natural. It's also commonly found as ceiling insulation. Straw does not rot well in the absence of nitrogen, so handles being sometimes wet, e.g. from condensation. #Insulation #Straw #Building #Materials #Construction #History https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/114/850/357/296/379/566/original/678ec539f15cc3f6.jpg https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/114/850/355/827/203/341/original/92df173b6897a819.jpg npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Sunday soldering. One of those crappy garden solar lights we found here. They're never waterproof, because then they wouldn't break and you wouldn't buy more. Here a pin to the YX8018 controller chip corroded away, flush with the TO-94 housing. I crudely crushed away enough of the housing resin to expose the remaining lead inside and soldered a new wire to it. Works again, although I'll also have to put a recycled battery in, as the miniscule 40 mAh Ni-MH pack has about 2 mAh actual capacity remaining. Tip: If you did buy one of these crappy lamps, squirt some silicone caulking in the joints to make them waterproof. #Electronics #Macro #MacroPhotography #Repair #Fixed #DIY #Solar #Lamp #Soldering https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/114/766/281/818/807/318/original/4bb92005938fc3f7.jpg https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/114/766/282/047/810/250/original/8e09185d8c862d86.jpg npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar @nprofile…r5de I'm more worried about the spreading of German raccoons 😁 https://www.theguardian.com/environment/2025/jun/19/raccoons-german-city-kassel-wild-population-europe-aoe npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar @nprofile…r5de That's because in Romania they do have them :) Wolves here too, ripping up goats and leaving the pieces for the owner to collect. npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar @nprofile…r5de And gave the government a proper scolding about it 😁 npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar @nprofile…73ne I've always felt that putting pipes inside walls was a dreadful mistake that became standard somehow. npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar I remember complaining about a drought a while ago... #Rain #Lithuania #Weather #Sky #Homestead #Farm #Cloud https://f2.tchncs.de/media_attachments/files/114/675/958/756/373/418/original/db34e8d7c8b0f935.jpg npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar People complain about content warnings for politics or nipples, but nobody uses the content warnings I want: posting of non-metric units. #ContentWarnings npub1a4m6np2j3t7n6ztqj5yegvlfpfq336h9h4m06k35e39hymyaqmtqmnx83s Y⃒̸̷̝̜̙ͥͥͥngmar Woken up early by thunder, went unplugging things, back to bed.
