**Ableton Live 12 Linux Compatibility update**
**New release: 2026.07.17.2**
Changes:
- WineASIO replaced with PipeASIO, a native PipeWire ASIO driver.
- Hardware inputs arrive as separate channels, Live can record from any PipeWire source, and the buffer size stays locked at 256 frames. Driver settings live in ~/.config/pipeasio/config.ini.
- Live now idles at about 2 to 5 percent CPU, dropping the baseline CPU usage by like 75%
- Theme regressions fixed. Live follows the system light/dark scheme again.
- Webview corruption in the Learn View fixed.
- The installer can now update in place. Live, your settings, and your license are kept.

2. Put your Ableton Live zip from ableton.com next to it.
3. Run: `sh install-ableton-latest.run`

this is not a slight at Paul: the reason why Linux is ignored is because the vast majority of open source either doesn't give a shit about any form of creative expression beyond code, or truly believes that the ideological nature of their work excuses labyrinthian human-hostile interfaces. None of this was even remotely feasible until Valve Software invested all of their Steam loot box money into Proton and modernising the Linux A/V stack. Just in time, it turns out, but still a massive embarrassment to the software industry as a whole.

these aren't actually hacks. They are full blown Wine implementations to add unfinished Wine implementations to the Wine API translation layer. Once they are included they should work forever unless Ableton makes drastic changes to their next version of Live.

it's already been leaked, there's an aborted effort to get the push 3 binary working elsewhere. I personally think Valve' Proton work shows that well designed Wine implementations can even outperform native builds.

well there's a list in my posts about what makes this fork special. But more generally: Live 12 is notoriously unusable on Wine, VSTs behave erratically or not at all, WinASIO is a struggle for most people, and anything that disconnects cannot be recovered without rebooting Ableton. The fork addresses all of these issues and more. It is, as I said in my post, a fork that turns Ableton into a first class citizen

In 2015 I was on a beach in Hawai'i helping build the prototype of what became Signal. I argued that the app needed pseudonyms because abusers know their victims' phone numbers. I lost the fight that day. History proved me right, and Signal would move to usernames under [@Mer__edith](https://mastodon.world/@Mer__edith )'s stewardship.
In this new essay, I trace the line from Barlow's Declaration of Independence of Cyberspace through smart-home forensics, metadata killings, and Archive Team's non-consensual Tumblr scrape to ask: when did we decide that a jpeg is a photograph, that a profile is a person, that storage is memory?
The answer involves a boat off Honolulu, the early days of Signal, Iran's missiles over Amazon's Dubai AWS facilities, and the communities already building for a world where the server goes dark. This is an essay about infrastructure, memory, archiving without consent, and what we lose when we mistake the filesystem for memory.
It is also the angriest and most personal text I've ever written. I'm furious, and you should be too. We bet an entire civilisation on a brutal and unreliable stack. Now, fate has come to collect that wager.
