Up to 777 people have been held at an Arizona ICE facility designed for 157. There are no beds, no showers. People sleep on concrete floors and have been held there for up to 18 days — that we know of.

Wow! I had always just assumed it was a double-sided bar and there were two barmaids! I hadn't recognized it as involving reflections.
I remember being fascinated by mirrors when I was maybe three or four. I have a very clear memory of looking into one that hung on a hallway wall, looking into it at an angle and being amazed by how much imagery was in the reflection. I wondered how so much could fit into one piece of glass. It seemed magical.

I've always been suspicious of Deepak Chopra. He's a businessman who presents himself as a spiritual teacher. A lot of what he says is quantum technobabble, designed to manipulate the unwary into thinking he has depths.

I'm fascinated by doubled words in ordinary¹ English sentences, such as:
…the company I worked for for ten years…
…I noticed that that man is tall…
…they had had their dinner…
…I do do that…
The words aren't technically duplicated since they have different functions, but it's still cool. I wonder if anyone's catalogued all the words this naturally² happens with.
1. Not sentences constructed to duplicate a word.
2. Words in quotes not allowed (…this "this" is in the wrong font… etc)

People of a certain age from Britain (and maybe elsewhere) will remember with horror having to use toilet paper that resembled tracing paper. It was hard and crinkly, not at all absorbent, and you could literally use it for tracing.

Yes, adverbs tend to weaken writing.
The other best thing is to read your writing out loud. You pick up things that way that you miss when you're reading silently. Silent reading doesn't let you hear repetition or awkward phrasing as easily.
I try to do that when I'm writing a book, but it takes a lot of time, especially when you keep stopping to edit.
Alternatively, "hear" your writing being narrated by your favorite NPR host. That can teach you a lot.

Every time I'm writing a book I'm grateful to Benjamin Dreyer, who suggested that every writer should try going a week without using:

* quite
* so

* in fact
It's astonishing to search through a draft to find these words. In almost every case a sentence is better off if you just delete them. On rare occasions they serve a purpose, but it's possible to reword in order to get rid of them. But I'd like to train myself not to use them in the first place!

I don't think these questions adequately reflect what America is. There have always been two competing tendencies There's a tendency toward democratization, and one toward (white, male, christian) oligarchy. Both those tendencies can be seen in the founders, who wanted the American people to govern themselves, but who had a very narrow view of who was fit to govern. We're seeing the oligarchic tendency very nakedly revealed in Trump, and the democratic tendency on the streets.

I'm going to have to tell my son to stay at his mother's place so that I don't have to drive him to school. This is not just for my safety, but for his. He's black, and could end up being assaulted or killed. He's adopted from one of the countries that Trump is no longer allowing immigration from, and they could easily make up an excuse to strip him of his naturalized citizenship.

This is insane. I just got a warning that ICE is coming to my area in the next week to two weeks. I'm a Green Card holder, but they could still put me in a detention camp or deport me without warning — e.g. because I make social media posts critical of the government.

Someone talked about LLM-generated text yesterday: "Look for the em-dash. No one uses them except AI."
I've heard people confidently say this. I've also heard of people being accused of using AI because they used em-dashes.
The thing is, AI uses em-dashes because human writers do. Picking up the nearest book (Zinsser's "On Writing Well") I see em-dashes on almost every page.
People will say "Em-dashes, therefore AI" because they just haven't noticed them when reading. They've been there.

The law can be misused by authoritarians, but then it ceases to be the Rule of Law and is simply authoritarian abuse. The Rule of Law by definition means that there's impartial justice that applies to all. When governments start misusing the law to punish their enemies and reward their supporters, the Rule of Law is no longer in effect.

The fans go off when the car's electrics are turned off, and only come back on when the car is started again, so I've never seen the point of turning them off. I've also never had battery problems because of doing this.
But perhaps in some vehicles this is a problem, or perhaps some people fear it will be.
I'm curious because when I use the car I wonder why I'm suffocating, and discover that my partner has turned the air off. My ex-wife also used to do this.

It sounds like you leave the settings on the ventilation system in the on position when you switch off the car. Not everyone does that. When they stop the car, some people turn the fans to "off." even if their car has a thermostat.

Incidentally, the Vedic Sanskrit for tiger is vyāghra, which is pronounced almost identically to the name of a certain little blue pill. I suspect that’s not an accident!

Thank you. Yes, it is horrible. I was summoned to an immigration office a couple of months ago (I'm a resident alien) and I spent the hour-long drive there memorizing my partner's phone number (a sign of the times that we don't know these things) in case I ended up being disappeared into a detention camp. Fortunately I just heard the other day that they're issuing a new green card. So I'm OK for now, but if they get desperate to fulfill their quotas I might be for the chop.

Please don’t joke about that! You probably don’t know, but my daughter is black and an immigrant. I live in terror that she will have her naturalization revoked and be deported. I’m in the middle of applying for a UK passport for her for that reason, and also just in case the country becomes unsafe for her. There really is no obligation to finish a book you don’t find satisfying. You may feel a sense of obligation to finish something that you started, but it’s worth questioning that, since it can end up being self-punishing. I also don’t think that it’s a good use of the limited time you have available on this earth to stick with books that drain you. Find a book that gives you pleasure!

There's a growing trend of author impersonation. Usually it's someone claiming to be a famous author, and just wanting to say hi. Then after some nice chit-chat they'll ask about your work. And it just so happens that they know an excellent editor or publicist, whose details they're happy to share with you. The cost is very reasonable!
Usually it's done much better than this, though.

The sun had been orange all afternoon, all the way to sunset. The moon, which was ahead of me for the whole of my drive home from my friend's house, was also orange.
The photo was taken on my phone, and so is crappy. But it does show the color of the moon.
The smoke is coming from fires in Canada.

There was a weird vertical stripe in the sky last night. I thought it might be an aurora, so I took a long exposure photograph, which can capture the colors far better than the human eye. But there was no color. It was just a weird stripe, presumably of smoke. And you can see that there is haze in the sky, with a fairly distinct boundary, beyond which, at the top right, you can see clear sky and clouds.
A hazy, smoke-filled sky, with a river of smoke running through it or above it, I presume.

Gutenberg.org has a bunch of Dunsany's books. I just downloaded the epub of "A Dreamer's Tales" which I *think* contains the "Idle Days on the Yann" story. He sounds like a stunningly original writer.

There was also a film made based on one of his plays that has a very clever plot. I'd love to see it.

A post office near me has historical paintings on the wall. One of them is titled "Cruel Adversity" and shows a native American with a flaming torch looking down on a settlers' cabin. The title refers to the settlers, since the artist could not imagine it being any kind of cruel adversity to have your land stolen and your people wiped out. The original inhabitants just *didn't matter* in this way of thinking.
Found it online. It's been a source of controversy. Painted 1959.
