This area of the yard I planted up over the last five years ago after a tree came down. Now, it just does it's thing. I weed wack it in the fall except for the grasses. Then mow it down in spring after removing woody stuff. Other than that very little input from me, no fertilizer,water,blah blah blah.
Do the neighbors like it?
I don't really care, besides I put on the crazy old man routine and that keeps them away.
It's not really a routine.

This peony is growing up through the roots of a maple tree. It was there when I bought this property 20 yrs ago and it still blooms each year even though the area is considerably more shady now. Tough plant.

With the exception of the anise tree, I've gotten rooted cuttings of the others,as well as about 10 other species of native shrubs from my county soil and water conservation district. They sell regionally appropriate trees and shrubs, a bundle of 5 of most species for $12. Fifteen years into my #nativeplants conversion and I couldn't be happier.

yep, since I started concentrating on natives, I don't fertilize, mulch or water anymore. (New plants the exception) I cut back some of the taller ones in June but everything else gets chopped to the ground once a year. Easy gardening

the one in the photo is in an area that can get pretty dry. Though I do dump quite a bit of leaf mulch back there. It certainly isn't wet. It's next to an arborvitae and a forsythia hedge and only gets morning sun.

Picked up the #nativeplants from my local soil and water conservation district here in #Ohio. Five rooted cuttings of each, $12. The potted plants were a little more . Planting a small forest along the back property line. I won't be around to see it, but the birds and the bugs will be happy. #pollinators #Gardening

My first lettuce seedlings were transplanted yesterday. I left them in the garage overnight. Sometime during the night a mouse (I think) plucked all of one variety out of the pots. Either he didn't care for the taste of the others, or he couldn't get his now fat butt up into the higher pots.
I gave the cat a stern talking to this morning.
