What makes Nunchuk different from other Bitcoin collaborative custody providers?
Our service rests on four pillars:

We committed to these pillars because of a unique experience that shaped us: our part in the Freedom Convoy incident of February 2022. When the Canadian government moved against the protesting truckers and their supporters, we were served a Mareva injunction demanding that we disclose information about our users and freeze their funds. Many services voiced support for self-custody in principle but watched from a distance, unwilling to take on the protesters as users for fear of the government’s response.
That was the moment our vision of what Nunchuk should be became clear. The question we now ask of ourselves is simple: if an entity is powerful enough to compel us to disclose information about our users and freeze their funds — could we even do it?
Can we and our clients withstand a state-level attack? And crucially, it’s not enough to be willing to say no. Our architecture has to make it so that we cannot comply in the first place.
That’s why we’re KYC-free. Your privacy is paramount. Anyone targeting you learns nothing about you even if they compromise Nunchuk, because we don’t hold that information. The one exception is that subscribers provide an email at signup (an anonymous address like Proton works fine), because we need a way to reach you during exactly the kind of security incident we just lived through. Last weekend made the case that this trade-off was the right one.
That’s why we insist on no single point of failure. In practice this means multi-vendor multisig as the foundation. For our assisted wallets, it also means the keys you hold are dedicated hardware signers (no hot key on the phone). In collaborative custody, the provider already holds one key. If the client’s other keys included a hot key running in an app the same provider maintains, a forced or malicious software update could seize a majority of keys (in a 2-of-N setup) and sweep or freeze funds. A hot key on the user’s phone would make life easier for us and our users, but it would fail the standard we set for ourselves in 2022. So we made the harder choice and disabled it entirely in our assisted wallets.
That’s why we build on open standards. In the worst case, you can always migrate your Nunchuk setup to other software that follows the same Bitcoin standards, such as Sparrow. The exit door stays permanently open, even if Nunchuk were to disappear tomorrow.
That’s why we’re Bitcoin-focused. Bitcoin is what we build for, and what we build on, including its Layer 2 system. The wider “blockchain” industry, with many centralizing points of failure, whether explicit or implicit, has proven throughout the years that it cracks under real pressure. We chose depth over breadth, and quality over quantity.
These are the reasons Nunchuk stands apart from other services.

Introducing Phased Rollout.
Until now, a Nunchuk inheritance plan sent everything to a single heir the moment it triggered. That still works if it’s what you want. But real families are rarely that simple. Maybe you’re splitting your estate between a spouse and kids. Maybe one heir is ready for a lump sum and another isn’t. Maybe you want to stagger distributions for tax or planning reasons.
Now you can divide the estate however you like. Say your spouse gets 50% and your kids split the rest. Each beneficiary has their own share, and their own release schedule.
And you can phase each share over time. One heir receives a lump sum in year 5. Another gets 2% a year for a decade, then 4% a year after that. You build it stage by stage, setting a percentage and a date for each, until the stages add up to 100%. The plan handles the rest.
What if an heir never claims? You decide in advance. Unclaimed shares can stay put, or redistribute to the other beneficiaries after a period of inactivity or on a date you set. No share ever gets stranded.
Everything else works exactly as before. The multisig, your Backup Password, the inheritance key are all unchanged. You don’t migrate anything or move any funds. You hold your own keys throughout. Phased Rollout changes how your bitcoin is distributed, not who controls it.
It runs on our off-chain protocol, the flexible one, which you can update as often as life requires: change beneficiaries, adjust the timing, or reshape the whole plan, all without a new wallet or on-chain fees. If you’d rather have Bitcoin itself enforce your plan, with no dependence on us, that’s what our on-chain protocol is for. Different tradeoffs, both fully supported, and you’re never locked into either. Start with one and switch to the other whenever your needs change.

Most agentic wallets give the agent a standalone wallet or delegated signer.
Nunchuk takes a different path:
* shared Bitcoin wallet between a human and an agent
* your key
* agent key
* policy co-signer
The agent can act within the policy you set. Above the limit, your signature is required.
Funding a wallet and authorizing an agent are not the same decision.
The wallet can receive funds without automatically increasing what the agent can spend. Receiving is a normal wallet operation. Spending authority is configured separately through Platform key policies — limits, delays, approval flows.

"When the Canadian dollar becomes worthless, we will be here to serve you, too."
That was our closing reply to the Ontario Superior Court of Justice in 2022, when they ordered us to freeze and disclose information about the bitcoin involved in the Freedom Convoy protest.
The story of how that email came about has never been told. Today, we’re sharing that story, and how that event forged our DNA & mission.

February 2022. The Freedom Convoy protest was paralyzing Ottawa. Two years of lockdowns and mandates had created incredible social tension.
On Feb 14, Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act for the first time in Canadian history. It was designed for wars or terrorism; it was now being used against protesters.
Protesters’ bank accounts were frozen without due process. GoFundMe seized $10M in donations at the government’s request. The RCMP demanded that financial firms blacklist Bitcoin addresses.
The Ontario Securities Commission flagged tweets by Coinbase CEO Brian Armstrong and Kraken CEO Jesse Powell criticizing the use of the Emergencies Act to law enforcement. Balaji Srinivasan questioned whether Canada was still a “democracy”. Police began mobilizing in Canada’s capital.
The authorities seemed willing to use everything, even extraordinary measures, to quash the protest.
Many Bitcoin companies backed away, despite having millions in funding.
Jesse Powell, having previously donated one bitcoin to the protest, warned users that Kraken “cannot protect you” from the Canadian government. Elon Musk, who voiced support for the protesters, tweeted “I wish I could help. At this point, it seems that voting at the next election is the remedy.” Even powerful CEOs seemed powerless in the situation.
Then, we received the Mareva injunction.
Nunchuk, a tiny startup still in its infancy, was ordered to freeze assets and disclose information. We are self-custodial and technically unable to comply. But the threat was serious.
The pressure was immense. We had no idea how far the Canadian government was willing to go. And judging by what they had done: very far.
Concerned about the risks to their families, two members of our team decided to quit.
It was an existential crisis.
To complicate the situation, my own personal life was in upheaval.
Around the time the Emergencies Act was invoked, I learned that I would soon become a father.
I went from pure joy to total distress within a week. I thought about the world my child was going to grow up in.
I thought about why I started a Bitcoin company in the first place.
If Bitcoin couldn’t matter in a situation where people needed it most, what good is it? How is it any different from the corrupt, permissioned financial system we grew up with? The one that brought the world to its knees in the Great Financial Crisis, along with many other social woes that we’ve only begun to understand since the shift in 1971? What’s the point of it all?
What will I tell my son about what happened in February 2022?
Then I sat down and wrote the reply.
That email became our North Star. It clarified our mission: to build tools that maximize individual financial freedom and privacy, minimizing reliance on any third party.
"Trusted third parties are security holes", as the great Nick Szabo once said.
This event taught us that true sovereignty requires technologies designed to withstand pressure. Not just from governments, but from time itself.
If we are to secure wealth for generations, our solutions must eliminate ALL single points of failure. They must be designed to outlive us.
Today we announce the next major step in that mission: the realization of our commitment to trust-minimized generational security.

Nunchuk apps are NOT vulnerable to the recent NPM security exploit.
Our apps are fully native, with no Javascript or NPM dependencies. This was a conscious decision to reduce our supply chain to the bare minimum.

Note that on mobile it might be impossible to guarantee that your background process can run indefinitely. The OS will kill it from time to time based on resource constraints.

Agreed. Bitcoind was never designed to be a server. And RPC over HTTP is insecure.
That’s why we have things like the Electrum protocol, which was designed to be a proper backend server for syncing. (You can design a different protocol, but that’s another story).

That's a valid point. Finding the right balance in our messaging is a constant challenge, and we take the responsibility to avoid creating that anxiety very seriously.
But for us, putting up a paywall isn't the answer, because 1Password, as great as they are, don’t solve the same existential threat we're focused on.
Bitcoin self-custody is already seen as "hard" by most people, and the massive push towards ETFs and custodial services makes it worse every day. Our core mission is to fight that trend. From day one.
What use are our services if the foundation itself gets destroyed? If 90% of Bitcoin ends up with custodians in 20 years, the project will have failed, and everything we've been building (which, btw, include networks like Nostr) will have been for nothing.
To win this battle, the best and most secure tools for self-custody must be free and accessible to the largest number of people possible. That's why the Nunchuk base app will always be free. It’s non-negotiable for us.

Respectfully, the claim that we 'only exist to get users to join premium bullshit services' is the opposite of reality.
Since day one, we have been pouring huge resources into building and maintaining a professional-grade Bitcoin wallet and offer it for free. We led the way with standards like BIP129, advanced coin control and were first with features like encrypted group wallet and Taproot/MuSig2 support. We do this because we believe that if the majority of Bitcoin is not in self-custody, the project will fail. In fact, the vast majority of our users are free users, and we dedicate about 80% of our development efforts each year to free features.
Calling our premium services 'bullshit' is a mischaracterization. They solve critical, high-stakes problems for people who need them, and the revenue from those services is precisely what allows us to keep the core wallet free, private, and independent.
The alternative is VC funding, ads, or tracking users. We're committed to building a sustainable business on a Bitcoin standard, and we believe our model is the right one for our users and for Bitcoin itself.

Correct, Tapsigner doesn’t use BIP39 seed phrases, but raw master private key (XPRV), which is a level lower than seed phrase (a seed phrase is an abstraction over XPRV).

Taproot fee selection: what’s that about?
Taproot lets one wallet hide many spend paths.
Different path → different weight on-chain → different fee required.
So we added two ways to handle it:
• Manual: see every path and its fee. Tap the one you want.
•Automatic: if cheap-vs-costly is ≤ 10 % or $0.20, we default to the pricier path. Tweak the thresholds or turn them off any time.
As Bitcoin smart contracts get more complex and the subsidy era fades, fee variability will keep growing, both within a single path and across multiple paths, even before you factor in fee-bumping tools like RBF or CPFP.
We’re building a solution that’s easy to use and puts you in control.

Yes, for cold storage you might not want to only use Tapsigners (although, even a Tapsigner-only multisig would still be better than something like Bitkey, which is a closed system). As long as you have at least one hardware in your multisig quorum that has a display and can verify transactions independently, it’s a solid setup.

You can pair a hardware signing device with Nunchuk that does have a display (like a Coldcard or Blockstream Jade), and verify the details of the transaction before signing. You can also pair multiple hardware with Nunchukm and create a multisig wallet, which offers superior security and robustness compared to a singlesig wallet.
In the above setup, Nunchuk only acts as a watch-only wallet coordinator. So yes, 100% Nunchuk can be used for cold storage. And many of our users have done so.

They are completely different wallets. NativeSegwit and Taproot wallets are defined differently. They don't even use the same derivation path for the XPUBs. Sounds like Stack Wallet implement it in a non-standard way.
BIP84 describes a NativeSegwit singlesig wallet.
BIP86 describes a Taproot singlesig wallet.
